Sand, George (1804-1876) George Sand was the pen name of Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, a French novelist of the 1800's. Her work was admired by the greatest writers of her time. After her death, Sand's writing went out of style, and she was remembered only for her shocking lifestyle and her love affairs with the composer Frederic Chopin and the poet Alfred de Musset. She defied social convention by smoking cigars and wearing men's clothes. Since the emergence of the women's movement in the mid-1900's, Sand's work has been rediscovered and she has attracted critical attention as a novelist and autobiographer. Sand was born in Paris and grew up in the tiny village of Nohant. She went to Paris in 1831 to write. Her many works can be divided roughly into four periods. Her first works were novels of romantic passion, notably Indiana Valentine (1832), and Lelia (1833). These novels protest against the socially defined condition of women and reflect her own emotional desires and disappointments. They plead for a woman's right to sincere love and to lead her own life. Beginning about 1840, Sand expressed her concern with social problems in such novels as Consuelo (1842-1843). In the mid-1840's, she wrote original novels of life in the French provinces. These include

George Sand
an amazing woman
George Sand (1804-1876) "The world will know and understand me someday.
But if that day does not arrive, it does not greatly matter.
I shall have opened the way for other women."
George Sand was an amazing author, personality, and all-around woman. She earned as much notoriety for her Bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. Born Aurore Dupin, she was the most famous woman writer in 19th-century France. A prolific and iconoclastic author of novels, stories, plays, essays, and memoirs, she represented the epitome of French romantic idealism. She demanded for women the freedom in living that was a matter of course to the men of her day. George's first independent novel, Indiana , the story of an unhappy wife who struggles to free herself from the imprisonment of marriage (explicitly called a form of slavery), made her an overnight celebrity. Subsequent novels, such as Valentine and Lélia , astounded readers with their frank exploration of women's sexual feelings and their passionate call for women's freedom to find emotional satisfaction. In the eyes of many critics, George's masterpiece is her autobiography. Though she was a brilliant writer, she was perhaps most famous for her personality and lifestyle. I have read several of her books, but her work is not why I think she is an amazing woman. Rather, it is her personal life...just being who she was is what makes her an amazing woman, especially considering the time when she lived and how radical a person she was - not only for that time, but for modern times as well.

November 21 ~  One Happiness In Life Right Words at the Right Time
"There is only o n e happiness in life: to love and b e loved." ~ George Sand Independent woman George Sand (1804-1876), born Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin to an aristocratic Parisian family, did the unthinkable in her time : she claimed her equality, took on a man's name, and left a loveless marriage to pursue her dreams to write "We cannot tear out a single page of our life ," sheobserved, "but we can throw the whole book in the fire." A bold and dynamic woman , she had open love affairs, famous ones with composer Frederic Chopin and poet Alfred de Musset. She cross-dressed, smoked a pipe, and said with brutal honesty , "Man. . . is only too glad to have woman hold strictly to the Christian principle of suffering in silence Biographer Rene Doumic called the courageous Sand "a genius...and daughter of Rousseau ,"and celebrated Sand's spirit as "vibrating with every breath, electrified by every storm, she (Sand) looked up at every cloud behind which she fancied she saw a star shining." An inspiration to writers Elizabeth Barrett Browning Virginia Woolf Victor Hugo , and others, Sand's prolific career included over 100 novels, plays, and essays, including her famous novel, Lelia (1833).

Her novels present a large fresco of romantic sentiment and 19th-century life, especially in its more pastoral aspects. At the age of 14, tired of being the "apple of discord" between her mother and grandmother, Aurore went to the convent of the Dames Augustines Anglaises in Paris. Though she did her best to disrupt the convent's peaceful life, she felt drawn to quiet contemplation and direct communication with God. To save Aurore from mysticism, her grandmother called her to her home in Nohant. Here Aurore studied nature, practiced medicine on the peasants,.....

One approaches the journey's end. But the end is a goal, not a catastrophe.
Sand, George
Death and Dying

I see upon their noble brows the seal of the Lord, for they were born kings of the earth far more truly than those who possess it only from having bought it.
Sand, George
Farming and Farmers

Faith is an excitement and an enthusiasm: it is a condition of intellectual magnificence to which we must cling as to a treasure, and not squander on our way through life in the small coin of empty words, or in exact and priggish argument.
Sand, George
Faith

It is sad, no doubt, to exhaust one's strength and one's days in cleaving the bosom of this jealous earth, which compels us to wring from it the treasures of its fertility, when a bit of the blackest and coarsest bread is, at the end of the day's work, the sole recompense and the sole profit attaching to so arduous a toil. Sand, George Farming and Farmers I regard as a mortal sin not only the lying of the senses in matters of love, but also the illusion which the senses seek to create where love is only partial. I say, I believe, that one must love with all of one's being, or else live, come what may, a life of complete chastity. Sand, George
