In 1831, after eight years of a marriage of convenience with Baron Dudevant, a country squire, she went with her two children to Paris, obtaining a divorce in 1836. She wrote some 80 novels, which were widely popular in their day, supporting herself and her children chiefly by her writing. Her earlier novels were romantic; later ones often expressed her serious concern with social reform. Her liaisons—with Jules

G eorge Sand is the pseudonym of Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin Baronet Dudevant T he romantic 19th century French novelist, George Sand, the daughter of a French army officer named Dupin who was descended from King Augustus II of Poland was born Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin in 1804. (It seems she was an illegitimate daughter of Marshal de Saxe.) S he spent her early childhood with her grandmother at the château of Nohant. She was educated at a convent boarding school (1817-1820) and she returned to Nohant in 1820. In 1821, after both Aurore's father and grandmother had died, she married Casimir Dudevant a country squire, to escape her mother's guardianship. A urore soon found Nohant and married life too constraining for her and so moved out taking her two children with her to Paris. At the time divorce was illegal and so she was only separated from her husband. There she outraged bourgeois society by her unconventional ways; she wore trousers and smoked cigars in public. O n her own, she soon realized that the monthly allowance she received from her husband was not enough to lead the life she once did and so she began to publish her writings to gain money. In 1831 Sand started to write for 'Le Figaro'. She contributed 'Revue des Deux Mondes' (1832-41) and 'La République' (1848), and was a coeditor of 'Revue Indépendante' (1841). During these years she mad acquaintance with several poets, artists, philosophers, and politicians. Her first few novels were co-written with her lover Jules Sandeau from whose name her pseudonym was derived. In a few weeks she wrote with him a novel, 'Rose et Blanche' under the pseudonym Jules Sand. In 1832 she wrote her first solo

Sand, George (1804-1876) Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, better known as George Sand, is as infamous for her cigar-in-hand cross-dressing as she is famous for her eighty novels, twenty plays, and numerous political tracts. Sand also claimed an infamous ancestry. Her great-great-grandfather, an eighteenth-century king of Poland, sired out of wedlock her great-grandfather, who in turn fathered an illegitimate daughter, Sand's grandmother, Aurore Dupin de Franceuil. On her father's death, the future writer lived in the worlds of two women who hated each other, her aristocratic grandmother, owner of the estate of Nohant-Vic in Berry, and her mother, daughter of a Parisian bird seller. From her grandmother Sand inherited an independent spirit, and from her mother, a devotion to socialism. Sponsor Message.

Sand was born in Paris on July 1, 1804, the daughter of a French army officer named Dupin who was descended from King Augustus II of Poland. Most of her childhood was spent in the country at Nohant, in Berry, except for a convent education in Paris. She married Casimir Dudevant, a country squire, in 1822 but soon became bored and left her husband. In 1831, she moved to Paris and joined a group of distinguished artists that included the French novelist Honor© de Balzac and the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. She became celebrated both for her writings and for her romantic liaisons, particularly those with the French poet Alfred de Musset and the Polish composer Fr©d©ric Chopin. Sand was a prolific writer, expressing in her works a deep concern for human problems and strong feminist ideals. She wrote her first two novels in collaboration with the French novelist Jules Sandeau. They were published under the name Jules Sand, which suggested the pseudonym she adopted for her next work
