Who Was Ruskin?
Who Was Ruskin The Ruskin Gallery The Coniston Gallery Linen and Lace ... Links to other Sites John Ruskin (1819-1900) was one of the greatest Victorians; his range of interests and achievements were quite staggering. He was an artist, art critic, amateur geologist, a teacher, writer, social critic and philosopher. He thought that it was fundamental to make links between all subjects and disciplines - for example, science and religion; nature and art. Somehow he could always see the whole picture. Leo Tolstoy said that Ruskin was: "one of those rare men who think with their hearts."
PARENT POWER.
John James, a hard-working wine and sherry merchant with the firm of Ruskin, Telford and Domecq, diluted his son's religious teaching with literature - notably Byron and Walter Scott. His ambitions for his son meant that he was prepared to spend money on tutors for Art and the Classics, and to buy him a place at Oxford University . John James would have liked his son to be a poet; Margaret thought he could become Archbishop of Canterbury. They were both well aware that they had a budding genius for a son. The three of them went travelling through Britain and Europe, during which time Ruskin kept diaries and made sketchbooks. He described his first views of the Alps as a kind of revelation - he felt that God, the natural world and his future life were all set before him in those awesome surroundings.

John Ruskin
John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold. He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway, and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks. Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolor painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

Ruskin, John
John Ruskin (1819-1900), a lifelong experimenter with genre, is best known as an art critic whose theories of beauty and the imagination were formed by his evangelical training, his attention to detail, and the early poetry of William Wordsworth . Ruskin's literary criticism, dispersed throughout Modern Painters (1843-60) and concentrated in his studies of myth, The Queen of the Air (1869), and of Romantic poetry and the novel, Fiction Fair and Foul (1880-81), reflects his sustained concern for art as a visible sign of an abstract quality, particularly the moral temper of the artist. His dramatic verbal translations of J. M. W. Turner's canvases in volume 1 of Modern Painters (1843), his highly wrought visual associations, and his allegorical readings of painting, sculpture, and landscape in later works such as Modern Painters 5 (1860) and The Bible of Amiens (1880-85) influenced George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Marcel Proust, among other writers.
Ruskin's aesthetic judgments were based on the link between beauty and morality made during daily Bible readings with his mother, who required him to recite passages from memory and enforced what he called in his autobiography accuracy of sensation and precision of feeling. In the habit of observing everything around him (including patterns in the carpet and bricks in the wall) and of searching the Bible for types and antitypes, Ruskin believed that physical qualities manifest divine attributes. In Modern Painters 2 (1846), he labels this relation "typical" after biblical typology, although the connection he makes between light, for example, and purity is actually allegorical, since it juxtaposes an abstraction with a phenomenon. Ruskin's "vital beauty," defined as "the appearance of felicitous fulfilment of function in living things" (4-146), is more akin to evangelical typology; an object displaying vital beauty reenacts "a moral purpose and achievement" (4-147) that arouses the sympathy of the virtuous beholder. By claiming that beauty was in effect purposive and inherent in objects, Ruskin was able to dissociate aesthetics from utility and invest art with a divine pattern or order. His position allied him with the eighteenth-century sensationists, notably

Administrative/Biographical History
John Ruskin was the most influential art critic of the Victorian age. His literary output was enormous and he had a remarkable influence on public opinion. John Ruskin was born in 1819, the only child of John James Ruskin, a wealthy wine merchant and his wife, Margaret. Ruskin remained close to his parents for the rest of their lives. He was much influenced by his mother's strong protestant beliefs, and his father's literary interests. His parents encouraged Ruskin's love of drawing and took him on numerous Continental holidays, which awoke his passionate interest in the natural landscape. He was educated at home, before going to Christ Church, Oxford, where he did not find the curriculum to his taste. In 1843 he published the first volume of Modern Painters (5 volumes 1843-1860), which began as a defence of the artist, J M W Turner, but grew into an exposition of Ruskin's principles of art. He later made an equally passionate defence of the Pre-Raphaelites, who had been initially dismissed by most established critics. Ruskin also had a great interest in medieval architecture. His European travels had introduced him to the architecture of France and northern Italy, and aware of the threat to it from neglect, unsympathetic restoration and modernisation, set out to describe it to his readers in great detail and aesthetic sensitivity. He was a champion of the gothic style, which he expounded in

Part 1: Diaries, 1835-1888 This project gives a fascinating insight into the life of one of the most important social and political commentators of the Victorian era, who also became one of its chief arbiters of taste.
  • They describe his travels to the Alps and to Italy (especially to Florence, Rome and Venice) and are embellished with numerous sketches. They provide his reactions to early Itailian art from Fra Angelico to Titian, and to contemporary artists such as Turner and Millais. They capture his views of landscape, the sublime, religion and death.
The diaries are far more extensive than the flawed printed edition and the juxtaposition of images and text and associated ideas will enable scholars to better understand Ruskin.

Manuscripts of John Ruskin (1819-1900) from the Ruskin Library, University of Lancaster
Part 1: Diaries, 1835-1888 Ruskin was the pre-eminent critic of the Victorian era. He helped to shape taste - influencing perceptions of art, architecture, literature, and the landscape. He was also a powerful social and political commentator, encouraging communal responsibility, praising the dignity of labour, and arguing for women's education, and a better life for the working man. His views on environmental issues, the role of museums, and the preservation of heritage are attracting increasing interest. His diaries have long been acknowledged as one of the most important sources for understanding his life, his thought and his influence. Hitherto, they have only been made available in a very poor and incomplete printed edition. In co-operation with the Ruskin Foundation and the Ruskin Library at Lancaster University, we can now offer access to a complete facsimile of the diaries on microfilm. There are 29 volumes of diaries in total covering the period 1835, 1840-41, 1844-52, 1854, 1856-78, 1880-85, 1888. These comprise over 4,000 pages ranging from tour abroad in 1835 at the age of sixteen, to his last tour abroad in 1888. As such, they provide insights into Ruskin as a precocious young man, challenging received ideas, and of Ruskin the great Victorian Sage, mentally troubled, and whose opinion is constantly being sought. In addition to his descriptions of the places he visits and the people he meets, there are also many sketches and embellishments in the text - whether these are sketches from nature or architectural details. There are excursions into aesthetic theory, church history, and loving descriptions of Venice.
