The following information on the Offshore 27 was supplied by Robert Chave sailing "FireFly", hull #2337 from San Pedro, California and Ruth Newell, daughter of Taylor Newell.
"FireFly"
Click to view Review: Robert Chave
The Offshore was produced by Cheoy Lee as a follow on to the highly popular and much loved "Frisco Flyer." The main differences are the two feet greater length-over-all, a deeper set to the rudder which is moved from a transom mount to a through-hull rudder-shaft design, full stand-up head room in the main cabin, and a little more sail area. On later versions the auxiliary is raised from 7 Hp to 10 Hp.
These up-grades from Frisco Flyer (which is Folkboat based) are achieved in a fairly integral way, despite the fact that it is hard to provide full head room in the cabin of a craft under 30' in length. Therefore the design remains something of a transition piece in Cheoy Lee's output, and the design never achieved the polish and maturity of the later Frisco Flyers. The increase in cabin windage which results from the full standing head room is compensated by the full keel (cutaway forefoot), and 2700 pounds of lead ballast.
The result is a boat with a good level of cabin comfort for the size, and a hull shape and weight which is very sea kindly. Because of the design's narrow beam the boat will sail almost half a knot faster than the rule-of-thumb hull speed of HS = 1.34 xSQRT(LWL) predicts. This ability for the boat to sail a little faster than the equations predict leads to its desirable (for the time) CCA rating.

62. Canadian Bush Pilots: Robert S. Grant's "Bush Flying: The Romance Of The North."

Many Died in the North
In fact, a single Otter collided with an island not far from Resolute during my assignment there. The pilot became nothing more than a scorch mark on the side of a cliff and his death became a reminder that the work we did every day came with its own distinctive hazards.
During my early days at Resolute Bay, high-time pilots warned me that Ellesmere Island, the most northerly in the Arctic Archipelago, was sometimes unapproachable due to vicious weather. Polar winds funneled through Peary Channel and Massey Sound, and smashed against upthrusting mountains and downsloping glaciers. Steep-sided fjords and cliffs captured gales and twisted them into severe, metal-bending turbulence. In summer, for formed rapidly. In spring and winter, continual white-out conditions reigned. Pilots who knew the island avoided Ellesmere when they could, but exploration camps and research parties working there needed their support.
With grocery boxes crammed to the ceiling, I left the comfort of Resolute in clear weather. Unlimited skies and visibility lasted until Bear Bay, a small pocket of Devon Island where it angled to form the Grinnell Peninsula. The Beaver did well until 8,000 feet, when thin air caused it to run out of throttle.

For YachtRacing.com TERMINAL ISLAND, Calif.-Team Dennis Conner has packed its gear, folded its tent that served as a sail loft, loaded the boats onto container ships and set off for Auckland, N.Z. and the America's Cup. The humble training base amid the giant cranes of the APL container terminal is officially closed. Only one thing was left behind: the rudder that still lies about two miles off Seal Beach about 10 miles away. "We haven't recovered it yet," operations manager Mick Harvey said Wednesday as the Direct Falcon sailed away with Stars & Stripes USA-66 buried among the containers. "We're still looking for it." That was the only part of USA-77 that wasn't recovered the day the newer of the racing machines went down in about four minutes when the rudder housing failed. The boat, christened less than two months earlier, was sailing inshore to pick up Conner and some sponsors behind the Long Beach breakwater when it sank in only 55 feet of water. The rudder fell off somewhere in its wake-perhaps deeper, perhaps buried in mud.

Rich Roberts Reports Coastal Cup: Santa Cruz 50 Beats Pegasus 77 for Overall By Rich Roberts Pyewacket leads Pegasus (left) away from the Golden Gate but was soon overtaken. Photo Courtesy of Rob Moore, Lattitude 38 While Philippe Kahn's Pegasus 77 blew away the record for Encinal YC's Coastal Cup from San Francisco to Santa Catalina Island, overall honors on corrected handicap time were won by Bill Leroy's aptly named Gone With the Wind. With early breezes up to 30 knots and gusts to 40, the Santa Cruz 50 from St. Francis YC, with a rating of minus-9, finished 11 1/2 hours back in the 360-nautical mile race. But GWTW corrected out on Pegasus 77 by collecting 123 seconds a mile from Kahn's Reichel/Pugh 77 (minus-132), which ran the course in 26 hours 24 minutes 39 seconds. Next came three Transpac 52s: Hong Kong businessman Karl Kwok's new Beau Geste in 32:41:32, Bill Turpin's Alta Vita, 35:36:12, and Jim Demetriades' Yassou, 36 hours even. Another TP52, Flash, dropped out with a rudder bearing problem. Beau Geste and Alta Vita will start the Transpacific Yacht Race July 6.

Bad Condition of Clallam's Rudder - Roberts to Give Evidence

When Chief Engineer DeLaunay was giving evidence yesterday before the Coroner's enquiry he said, "If the 'Clallam' had been insured for one hundred thousand dollars I don't think any would have lost their lives. Yes, I have reached that opinion. The only object Captain Roberts had at that time was to save the ship. When he got to Seattle and was interviewed by a Seattle reporter the first thing he spoke of was his vessel. He told of how his money had helped to build the ship, and he wasn't worrying about the lives that had been lost. It was the ship he was thinking about."
Chief Engineer Scott A. DeLaunay , of the lost steamer 'Clallam', gave evidence yesterday at the coroner's inquest before Dr. E.C. Hart

Robert Stevens Tate Flight Officer XXXX349 U.S. Army Air Corps On Saturday March 25, 1944, Flight Officer Robert S. Tate, of Nashville, Tennessee was shot down by enemy flak near Montdidier, France. He was flying a B-26 Martin Marauder Medium Bomber named "UTOPIA" which was last seen by returning crews about 2000 to 3000 feet below their formation when the plane exploded and no one was seen to parachute from the bomber. I first met Bobby Tate in November or December 1942 at Barksdale Field, Shreveport, Louisiana. He was assigned as co-pilot on Joseph E. Haley's crew; Harry C. Evans was the Bombardier-Navigator, Sgt. Howard Holliday, Engineer, Sgt. Lewis Cyr, Radio Gunner and Sgt, H. Ivy, Armorer Gunner. We received our crew training at Barksdale and were sent to England via the Southern route in April 1943. Haley's crew was assigned to the 452nd Squadron of the 322nd bomb group (M) which was located at Andrews Field, Great Saling near Braintree, England. Here we trained for low level attacks, 50 to 100 feet above the ground, to avoid detection by radar. The first low level mission flown by the Group on May 14, 1943 was a failure. The second mission was a total disaster against the same target, a power plant at Ijmuiden, Holland. The second mission on May 17, eleven planes were dispatched to attack at low level but only ten planes attacked the target. They were all shot down. Only 20 of the 66 man on these planes survived the crashes and all but 2 were captured. The eleventh plane had engine trouble and returned to base before crossing the North Sea.

  • Needs TLC The vessel was finished in 1981. It has been dry-docked since August of 1995. The company I was working for sent me overseas to work for one year and nine months, then I had a heart attack and could not work on the boat any more. That is why it has been dry-docked for so long. Exterior Details:
  • The hull is sound, except for two small areas that need a 1' x 1' doubler to be welded on.
  • An aft locker on deck that holds the propane tanks and needs a new lid.
  • The diesel engine is a 4-cylinder Perkins 107. The transmission has a reduction of 2:1. It has not been run since it was dry docked, so it is hard to say what the condition it is in at this time. At the very least you will need to remove the cover, free the pistons and do an overhaul.
  • The sail are original and in my estimation they need be replaced.

About Us Perspectives Best of the Best ... Youth by Mikel Kwaku Osei Holt
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and his wife of 20-plus-years, Pauletta, not only exemplify the consummate Black celebrity couple, but also provide a shining example of a positive nuclear family.
Every time you pick up a national magazine, it seems there's a positive story about the Washington's. There's pictures of the couple romantically strolling along the beach of some exotic resort, playing with their four children, or attending a lavish function, many of which celebrate our cultural achievements.
And, the fact that they survived two decades of marital bliss in Hollywood-AKA "Sin City"—is a testament in itself.
Marriage, as I've learned the hard way, is a physical sport, offering few time outs. Hell, even Adam and Eve got on each other's nerves, and they had the whole of the Garden of Eden to hide out in.
I once told someone that I served in Vietnam, fought police dogs and racist thug cops in Norfolk, Virginia, survived the Breier years, and carry the scars from a half dozen freedom and justice campaigns while trying to tear down the walls of apartheid.

The 2002 Round Island Race was held on Saturday September 28th. 2002, less then 48 hours after Tropical Storm Isidore blew through the Gulf coast. The race is a 110 mile sprint around Santa Rosa Island on the Florida Gulf Coast. With a total of 50 catamarans starting at Ft. Walton Beach Florida, just over 3/4 of the fleet finished the race.
The starting format used for this years start was the same as last year with a "reversed handicap" or "delayed start" for the faster boats. This year there was four seperate starts based on boat class. The first fleet started at 7:00 am with all non-Spinnaker boats whos handicap was .670 and above. The second fleet started at 7:30 am with the remaining non-spinnaker boats. At 8:00 am all spinnaker boats under 20' started followed by all spinnaker boats over 20' starting at 8:30 am. After starting, the competitors head south through the channel at Destin and into the Gulf of Mexico. Upon reaching the Gulf of Mexico and rounding the Whistle Buoy the fleet headed west for Ft. Pickens, 55 miles down the Florida coast. Around 10:00 am the wind slowly clocked around to the southwest, never completely dying, but hardly building to anything more then 5-8 MPH..

DOUGLAS MUNRO AT GUADALCANAL by Dr. Robert M. Browning Jr. The Coast Guard's first major participation in the Pacific war was at Guadalcanal. Here the service played a large part in the landings on the islands. So critical was their task that they were later involved in every major amphibious campaign during World War II. During the war, the Coast Guard manned over 350 ships and hundreds more amphibious type assault craft. It was in these ships and craft that the Coast Guard fulfilled one of its most important but least glamorous roles during the warthat is getting the men to the beaches. The initial landings were made on Guadalcanal in August 1942, and this hard-fought campaign lasted for nearly six months. Seven weeks after the initial landings, during a small engagement near the Matanikau River, Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro, died while rescuing a group of marines near the Matanikau River. Posthumously awarded a Medal of Honor, he lived up to the Coast Guard's motto"Semper Paratus." Douglas Munro grew up in the small town of Cle Elum, Washington. Enlisting in September 1939, Munro volunteered for duty on board the USCG cutter
