Robert S. Johnson survived an awful beating one day in June, 1943, when a Luftwaffe pilot shot up his helpless (but very rugged) P-47 Thunderbolt.
If that German pilot ever knew whom he hadn't killed, he surely lived to regret it. Bob Johnson would go on to score 27 aerial victories in his time with the 56th Ftr. Grp. , one of the top scoring groups in the ETO, under its great leader, Col. Hub Zemke. The top two aces of the 8th AF, Johnson and Gabby Gabreski, both flew P-47s with "Zemke's Wolfpack."
Growing Up in Oklahoma
Robert S. Johnson first saw airplanes in the summer of 1928, 3 pursuit bi-planes flown by the Army Air Corps "Three Musketeers" (the barn-storming era equivalent of the Navy's Blue Angels), performing impressively wild aerobatics over Lawton, Oklahoma. His Dad had taken eight-year Bob Johnson to an air show, a big event at Post Field, attended by hundreds of people. Young Bob sat on his Dad's shoulders, watching the bi-planes cavort in sky and staring at the huge bombers with their gigantic wooden propellers. Post Field was part of Fort Sill, an historic Army outpost; here Geronimo himself had been imprisoned and ultimately perished. In the Indian Wars of the 1840's young officers like Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, and W.T. Sherman had passed through Fort Sill. After the air show, Bob Johnson fell in love with flying and spent all the time he could at Post Field, learning to identify Boeing P-12 bi-planes and the low-winged P-26s, and aching for a chance to fly. But there were many other things in life for an active youngster in Lawton in those years: trying to catch the free-running Cavalry mounts, fishing for crayfish and catfish, cooking the fish over open fires on camp-outs, and hunting rabbits and squirrels with a .22. He was a Boy Scout, a member of Troop 39, a competitive boxer, and a football player.

Robert S. Johnson and the P-47
W hen Robert S. Johnson first saw a Thunderbolt, it was love at first sight. The P-47B was a giant with a 2,000 horsepower engine; not very pretty on the ground, but every inch a powerful machine, rugged and sturdy with all the mass of a tank. He scrutinized the tremendous four-bladed propeller. In each wing rested four 50 caliber machine guns, giving the Thunderbolt the ability to throw 7,200 rounds of lead per minute! He had a chance to check out the P-47 at Bradley Field: He took the plane up, nearly killing himself when the heavy canopy bar slid back and smashed his head. But he got the ship in the air and it howled its way up into the sky. He soon learned that "unless we plunged nose first into the ground, we couldn't hurt the Thunderbolt" . It could take the stress of any aerobatic maneuver. The pilots of the 56th Fighter Group grew to trust the fighter, knowing they could subject it to any demands of aerial combat.

A fitting tribute to an American hero
By Fred Alexander
"He just took his last flight," a nurse told Sue Roth about her Uncle Bob. "All I could think was how beautiful that was," said Roth in a Charlotte Observer (NC) story. Uncle Bob, 78, died in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 27, 1998 where he had been visiting his nieces and nephews. He was buried in the cemetery of River Hills Community Church in Lake Wylie, S.C. In an era of severe military budget cuts, the Air Force did the right thing. Three F-16 Fighting Falcons streaked across the cloudy sky in the missing man formation. The honor guard from Shaw AFB fired a 21-gun salute and played taps. While the mourners paid homage on that cold, icy day, one of America's greatest fighter pilots had doubtless finished that last flight. Here is the story of Col. Robert S. Johnson: There are many reasons why some flowers live and others do not. Animals grazing, a lover's plucking, or drought, just to name a few. Some B-17 and B-24 bomber crews are alive today because some flowers died in the mid-1930s, when young Bob Johnson lay in fields with his .22 rifle. He honed his marksmanship skills by shooting off daisy tops as they blew in the wind. In his 23rd and 24th years, 28 German fighters were downed in aerial combat because of Johnson's extraordinary eyesight, marksmanship, and flying abilities. He was the first 8th Air Force pilot to pass Eddie Rickenbacker's World War I score of 26. When he returned to America in May 1944, he was our top ace. At war's end his squadron commander, Francis Gabreski, and he were tied for fourth place among all American aces. Only pilots who flew in the Pacific had higher scores.
