SEMBLANZA DE LA LITERATURA ESTADOUNIDENSE
Las obras literarias de América recibían críticas muy severas en Inglaterra. Los estadounidenses se percataban con dolor de su excesiva dependencia de los modelos de la literatura inglesa. La búsqueda de una literatura propia se convirtió en una obsesión nacional. Como dijo el director de una revista de los Estados Unidos hacia 1816, "la dependencia es un estado de degradación lleno de desgracias; y ser dependientes de una mentalidad extranjera para lo que podríamos producir nosotros mismos agrega al crimen de la indolencia la debilidad de la estupidez".
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) La Autobiography de Franklin es, en parte, un libro de superación personal. Escrita para aleccionar a su hijo, sólo abarca los primeros años del autor. En el pasaje más famoso expone su programa científico para la superación personal. Franklin cita 13 virtudes: templanza, discreción, orden, decisión, frugalidad, laboriosidad, sinceridad, justicia, moderación, limpieza, serenidad, castidad y humildad. Diserta sobre cada una en otras tantas máximas; por ejemplo, a la templanza le corresponde ésta: "No comas hasta el hartazgo ni bebas hasta la euforia". Como científico pragmático, Franklin puso a prueba el concepto de perfectibilidad y fue su propio sujeto de experimentación. Franklin comprendió pronto que sus escritos podían ser el mejor medio para exponer sus ideas; por eso perfeccionó a conciencia su flexible estilo de prosa, no como un fin en sí mismo sino como una herramienta. "Escribe como el erudito y habla como el vulgo", aconsejaba. Siendo científico, aplicó el precepto postulado por la Real Sociedad (de Ciencias) en 1667 y empleó "un modo de hablar íntimo, llano y natural, con expresiones positivas, significado claro y la mayor frescura, para acercar las cosas lo más posible a la simplicidad matemática".
