The Facts

Philip Roth revisits an era when America's pluralist future was far from certain.

Click here to read more from Slate's "Book Blitz." "Let America Be America Again." John Kerry's campaign slogan, introduced last summer, subtly captured many people's fears that the country we thought we knew—humane, pluralistic, a light to the world—is in danger of being taken away from us. Philip Roth's new historical novel, The Plot Against America , resounds with echoes of today's politics, not simply because its president campaigns in a flight suit, but because it depicts a country on the brink between a bright future of progress and a dark path of intolerance. In The Plot , the election of the aviator Charles Lindbergh, an anti-Semite and Hitler admirer, to the presidency triggers a series of personal and political nightmares in the life of a middle-class Jewish family. "What's history?" Herman Roth, the narrator's father, at one point lectures young Philip. "History is everything that happens everywhere. Even here in Newark. … Even what happens in his house to an ordinary man—that'll be history too someday." Roth ratchets up the book's realism by sketching his wild tale strictly within the confines of the historical record . The gossip-monger Walter Winchell's voice wafts from the radio on Sunday nights, while the anti-Semitic radio preacher Charles Coughlin rallies his minions. The literate, feisty

"A little bit Country a little bit Rock & Roll" "If there's a common thread that runs through my music it's being a woman who has learned about her own empowerment and wanting to share it. Having the freedom to express myself, not being afraid of what the future brings and not being ashamed of where I've been. Writing and singing songs that tell it like it is from a woman's perspective, is ultimately what my music is all about." From her early days fronting the acclaimed heavy metal band "Femme Fatale" on MCA Records, to her current status as one of L.A.'s hottest rising stars, Lorraine's strong female image has resulted in a growing legion of devoted fans. When her 7 song demo EP hit radio outlets in fall 2001, programmers, critics and fans shouted Lorraine's praises. Translating Joseph Roth
Michael Hofmann considers why so many readers are discovering this Austrian author.
With the publication of Rebellion in January 2000, all the novels of the Austrian Jewish writer Joseph Roth (1894-1939) have finally appeared in English. By my reckoning, twelve publishers and eighteen translators have had a hand in the process - there are only fifteen novels! - and it happened in three distinct periods. The first was in Roth's lifetime, when his best-known and most successful books, Job and The Radetzky March , appeared fairly promptly in English translation. Then there was a long delay until the 1980s, when Peter Owen took up the baton, and published some of the other titles, like Flight Without End and Weights and Measures , and then Chatto came along with The Emperor's Tomb and Hotel Savoy and others. (The connection there was Jeremy Lewis, who came across Roth while a book reviewer for the Times; reviewing some of the Peter Owen volumes, and noting Roth's combination of beauty and elusiveness, he wrote (this is from memory): '... Roth took himself off the map. He should be ruthlessly exposed.' This he then began to do, when he became an editor at Chatto.) It was then, too, that I first got involved. Like Lewis, I first came across Roth as a reviewer in the mid '80s. I wrote about three or four of the books in the

Eduardo Paolozzi seemed to be a magpie, but saved the unsociable early and night-time hours for work: Those who knew him rarely saw Paolozzi at work . His day seemed to consist of diversions. He would flip idly through magazines or folders filled with clippings, go for a drink at the Chelsea Arts Club close to his studio, lunch at the Royal College of Art, or dine in one of the several restaurants where, thanks to gifts of his sculpture or prints, he never saw a bill. But he was prodigiously productive, working for several hours very early in the morning and late at night, when he knew he would not be interrupted. Remarkably generous to his friends, to whom he would hand out artists' proofs of prints, plaster maquettes and expensive books like sweets, Paolozzi was nevertheless subject to black moods, during which he could be woundingly insensitive. He was represented by very few dealers, and stayed with none of them for long. (thanks

Fax 860-768-5701 or email: ramsey@hartford.edu Foreword: Why would anyone bother to create a written history of WWUH? Those who have volunteered at this truly unique station will understand the answer to this question. WWUH is, and hopefully always will be, more than just a station. Many of the thousands of folks who have volunteered at the station over the years know what I am talking about, and it is because of this that many consider themselves part of the “WWUH Family”.
Over the years, I have been saving old documents for the future. I never thought of attempting to write a historical document until I was putting together the station’s photo albums in preparation for the 30th anniversary in 1998. In going through the hundreds of pages, it came as a pleasant surprise that I was able to identify a significant number of the unlabeled photographs. It then hit me that, due to my “longevity” at the station, I had “saved” in my mind, bits and pieces of the station’s history that no one else might have. It was a wonderful legacy, but one that ultimately would do no good unless I started writing down my recollections.

Days of Roth
THE HUMAN STAIN
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman. Written by Nicholas Meyer based on the novel by Philip Roth. Directed by Robert Benton. (14A) 107 min. Opens Oct 31. The Human Stain is the kind of novel that is irresistible to Oscar-hungry Hollywood types. An incisive yet juicy saga of race, sex and guilt set in the year of Clinton's impeachment trial, Philip Roth's PEN/
Faulkner Award-winner screams prestige. Roth's tale charts the downfall and unlikely return to grace of Coleman Silk, a septuagenarian Classics professor who is doubly vilified by his peers, first for allegedly making a racial slur in class and then for beginning a Viagra-fuelled affair with Faunia, a cleaning woman many decades his junior. After the lovers die in a car crash (an event foretold in the earliest sections of both the book and this film version), Roth's alter ego Nathan Zuckerman investigates Silk's life, eventually stumbling upon his friend's most guarded secret. The author's meaty, caustic and largely non-linear prose style has long frustrated film producers adaptations of

Welcome to Selmer.com Always committed to serving the needs of students, music educators, amateurs, and professionals, Selmer has grown steadily over the years, becoming the industry leader recognized for craftsmanship and quality. Our story is both unique and fascinating.
The Selmer family traces its roots back to the 18th century rural Lorraine region of France with Johannes Jacobus Zelmer. Enlisting in the French army provided a means of moving families from the country to the city. For three generations Zelmer men served in the same regiment, while the boys, too young to be soldiers, played in the band. Jean-Jacques Selmer (son of Johannes Jacobus), in addition to changing the spelling of the family name, ascended to the rank of drum major. The military afforded great opportunities for education and travel.
When Charles-Frederic Selmer (son of Jean-Jacques) died in 1878 he left sixteen children, five surviving to adulthood. Of these, Henri and Alexandre graduated from the Paris conservatory as accomplished clarinetists. Henri went on to perform in the famed Garde Republicaine band and the Opera Comique. By the early 1900s Henri had opened shop at Place Dancourt in Paris to meet the demand for his handmade reeds and mouthpieces. Soon repair work and customizing led to the manufacturing of clarinets.
