Extending the line of mentors
Early in 1998, Chuck Lewis approached the board of directors of the Center for Public Integrity-the widely respected watchdog group he heads in Washington, D.C.-with a special request. Among the journalists of national repute who help guide the center are Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Isabel Wilkerson; Susan Loewenberg, director of L.A. Theatre Works and producer of more than 200 hours of radio drama programming; and Ben Sherwood, broadcast producer for NBC Nightly News. "I told them, in essence, that after having done this for eight years, and never asking them for anything personally, I had one thing I wanted them to do for me," Lewis, AS '75, says. "I was that impassioned. "I said there was this person who had tremendously influenced my life. He taught me that it's not the actual substance of your work, it's the lives you touch. Ultimately, that's what is most important. I told them I wanted to reciprocate and honor his life and legacy." The man whose impact Lewis described to his board is Jim Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Political Science and International Relations. Lewis is among the hundreds of current and former students who feel a deep loyalty toward Soles, who has been a mentor and friend to students throughout his career at Delaware.

http://www.chicagopeacenow.org/APN-MOST SETTLERS WILLING TO EVACUATE-7-24-02.htm
Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Lewis Roth July 24, 2002 New Peace Now Study Finds Most Settlers Willing To Evacuate; Financial Compensation Preferred Solution New Maps Available Online Washington, D.C.—Americans for Peace Now (APN) today released a new study from the Israeli Peace Now movement that found over two-thirds of Israeli settlers in the occupied territories would obey a democratic decision to withdraw from their communities, while an absolute majority would see financial compensation as the preferred solution to the question of their evacuation. Only a tiny minority of settlers would resist evacuation by all means, while a small minority would refuse any solution involving evacuation. Further, the new Peace Now study found that the vast majority of settlers chose to live in the occupied territories for “quality of life” issues, not ideological or religious reasons. APN’s mission is to enhance Israel’s security through peace and to support the Israeli Peace Now movement. “The latest Peace Now survey of settlers is significant because it tears away the mask of the Settlers Council, which tends to represent some of the most militant settler views, and presents a picture of settlers who are much more pragmatic, respectful of the democratic process, and willing to accept reasonable compensation for their current homes,” said Mark Rosenblum, Founder and Policy Director of Americans for Peace Now. “We found that the attitude of most settlers will not constitute an obstacle to achieving a peace agreement that includes the withdrawal from settlements. Further, it appears that the current Israeli government’s insistence on pouring more money into the settlements and refusing to dismantle any of these communities is, in effect, holding settlers hostage who would be willing to make ‘aliyah’ (i.e., move to Israel proper) if provided the financial resources to do so.

Daniel Day-Lewis
Biography

Filmography

Date of birth: April 29, 1957
Place of birth: London, England
Category: Actor, Writer
Nationality: British
Son of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis and grandson of Ealing boss Sir Michael Balcon, Daniel Day-Lewis was one of the prominent British actors who emerged in the 80s alongside Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman and Tim Roth. Although Day-Lewis made his name in the theatre, he has not perfomed on stage since imagining he saw the ghost of his father whilst playing Hamlet. On the big-screen, Day-Lewis has starred in My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), In the Name of the Father (1993) and won an Oscar for his role in My Left Foot (1989). In the US, he starred in The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence (1993). After shooting the unloved The Boxer in 1997, Day-Lewis took a three-year break from film-making before being lured back to star in Scorsese's epic The Gangs of New York (2001).

Born:
14 May 1961 Where: London, England Awards: Won 1 BAFTA, nominated for 1 Oscar, 1 Golden Globe Height: Filmography: The Complete List
If you were looking for examples of artistic integrity, Hollywood probably wouldn't be your first stop. Yet Tim Roth , fast becoming a major star in America, has it in spades. Having decided early on to involve himself only in movies that interested him, he has steered well clear of inane blockbusters. Indeed, in the first two decades of his career, he made only two studio movies, surely making him the only Big Name who genuinely deserves a Lifetime Achievement gong at the Independent Spirit Awards.
And he's British - very much so. He was born on May 14th, 1961, in London, and might easily have carried the far more English moniker Smith. His father, a Spencer Tracy lookalike named Ernie, was a tailgunner during WW2 and, after 1945, became a Fleet Street journalist. Travelling to countries which vehemently disliked the Brits, he changed his name to the less antagonistic Roth. Tim's mother, Ann, was a teacher who later became a full-time painter.
Tim grew up in the salubrious surroundings of Dulwich, south London, but suffered the terrors of economic insecurity after his parents divorced while he was at primary school. School was initially not a happy place for Roth. Having failed the entrance exams for posher establishments, he was enrolled at the Dick Shepherd Comprehensive in Tulse Hill, where he was beaten up every day for not having an accent like Eliza Doolittle's father. He learned quickly, he now recalls, to speak proper, like. His education was not top-notch. He failed his 11-Plus and, after Shepherd's, moved on to the Strand Comprehensive where he was picked on again, this time for being short. As said, not much fun to be had at school. But he did involve himself on one level, a political one. Ernie was a left-winger and would regularly take Tim and his sister along to demonstrations. While at school, Tim took charge of their branch of the then-burgeoning Anti Nazi League.
