I want to paint not only shape but overflowing life. Waterfalls spreading over the rocks, or sometimes crunched like big rope, those variations move me. Mountains, valleys, oceans move me; I wonder how nature formed such handsome places. In Europe in places like Tuscany and Provence I was moved by how human habitation integrates with nature. I believe that vistas that move me would be beautiful to others. As I am a landscape painter, I must catch the beauty of the vista and fix it on the canvas. I must share my impressions with other people. I must leave my statements of artistic truth, which is completely different from photographic truth, to later generations. I was born in Tokyo, Japan. I studied painting in Japan for six years. In 1962 I obtained a Max Beckmann Scholarship to the Brooklyn Museum Art School which brought me to the United States. I married Richard Lewis Roth in 1963 and we raised two sons. I received my MFA from Florida State University in 1972. Since then we have been in New York City. This show commemorates our living and working together for 40 years.
