Overview Born Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, he changed the order of his name in response to his father's admiration for the Italian poet Dante Alghieri. One of four children (Maria [1827-1876], Dante, William [1828-1919], and Christina [1830-1894]) in a very talented family, he was, at first, better known as a painter than a poet.
In 1848 he foundedalong with Ford Madox Brown, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Huntthe Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which sought to return art to the purity of the style preceding Raphael and the neoclassical movement.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti Pintor e poeta inglês do século XIX.

Today, British artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) is known mainly by the popular reproductions of his portraits of red-headed femmes fatales. He developed his trademark female figure around 1860, inspired by Italian Renaissance portraits.
[Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), The Blue Closet (detail), 1857, Watercolour on paper, Tate (Purchased with assistance through the National Art Collections Fund from Sir Arthur Du Cros Bt and Sir Otto Beit 1916)]
His paintings symbolise woman's erotic power over man, and depict the lust and passion evoked by the female figure. At the same time, the modern character of his seductive women transcends their Victorian context. This is the first retrospective of this all-round artist in the Netherlands.

Dante Gabriel Rosetti (1828-1882)
Rosetti was most notable for being among the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . In fact, his Girlhood of Mary the Virgin was the first painting to bear the mysterious initials "PRB" after the signature in 1849. It was not until a year later that Rosetti made public the meaning of the initials at which time a firestorm of controversy erupted in which Rosetti and his fellow Pre-Raphaelites were accused of being romanists, blasphemers, atheists, and worse, most notably in a rather shoddy and vicious attack by Dickens on Milais's Christ in the House of his Parents . Most of his early works featured Elizabeth Siddal (who also posed for Millais and Hunt) whom he married in 1860. Two years later she died of an apparently suicidal overdose of laudanum and Rosetti became a virtual recluse and chloral hydrate addict. He was overcome with grief and guilt over having not been attentive enough to his wife and at the funeral he placed the only copy of his complete works of poetry in the coffin with her (in emulation of a story written by his sister Christina Rosetti some 12 years earlier). After Elizabeth's death, his principal subject was William Morris's wife Jane whose full-lipped sultry beauty has become most associated with his name and which generated significant criticism at the time. In 1870 after much soul-searching he had the body of of Elizabeth exhumed to retrieve his book of poetry, much of which was subsequently published. He died 12 years later in 1882 at a resort near Margate in Kent.

See also: Pre-Raphaelites "The young Rossetti was encouraged by his cosmopolitan parents to use his vivid imagination to develop his passionate interests of drawing and writing. All his life Rossetti was torn between his twin loves of poetry and painting - to such an extent that he regarded the two disciplines as inseparable. Arguably, with his facility and interest in both disciplines, he did himself a disservice as he never dedicated himself to either pursuit sufficiently to become a true master. In his youth he spent hours in the British Museum Reading Room soaking up as much literature as he could, to the detriment of his painting. Because of this he never developed the facility and ability of technique that would have helped him to become one of the really great painters; however he did become widely-read in German, French, and Italian. "Rossetti took the inspiration for his drawings from stories by his favorite authors, notably Shakespeare, Coleridge, Poe, Goethe, and, in particular, his chief obsession, Dante, with whom he felt a close affinity. Indeed he frequently annotated his paintings usually on the frame - with poems and texts to explain and develop the pictorial narrative and often in particular explaining the elaborate symbolism. For example, for his first real P.R.B. painting

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Dante Rossetti Dante Rossetti: 1828 - 1882 Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London in 1828. He was a cofounder of the Pre-Raphaelites , a group of English painters and poets who hoped to bring to their art the richness and purity of the medieval period. The son of the exiled Italian patriot and scholar Gabriele Rossetti and a brother of the poet Christina Rossetti, Dante showed literary talent early, winning acclaim for his poem The Blessed Damozel (1847) before he was 20 years old. As a student at the Royal Academy Antique School (1845-47), he met William Holman Hunt and John Millais, with whom he launched the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. Rossetti's first Pre-Raphaelite paintings in oils, based on religious themes and with elements of mystical symbolism, were The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Ecce Ancilla Domini (1850), both in the Tate Gallery, London. Although he won support from John Ruskin, criticism of his paintings caused him to withdraw from public exhibitions and turn to watercolors, which could be sold privately. Subjects taken from Dante Alighieri's Vita Nuova (which Rossetti had translated into English) and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur inspired his art in the 1850s. His visions of Arthurian romance and medieval design also inspired his new friends of this time, William Morris and

London, England Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the second son of a painting family. Despite his Italian parentage, Rossetti never visited Italy. An early disposition for drawing and literature led him to illustrate. Rossetti was not only a painter but a poet as well. He studied for a short time with Madox Brown , forming a life-long friendship, before transferring his allegiance to Holman Hunt . His friendship with Hunt and a subsequent meeting with John Everett Millais was the major factor in the creation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood In the early 1850s he met Elizabeth Siddal, the model for Millais' Laura Tadema and Arthur Hughes Click image to enter gallery We carry art books, vintage images CDs, vintage postcards, and memorabilia in our shop.
