the artist at a glance
Painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti is famous for his provocative and mesmerizingly beautiful images of women. In haunting paintings such as his Beata Beatrix The Day Dream , and Monna Vanna , Rossetti created a type of languid beauty that has cast a timeless spell of enchantment over viewers. It is this contribution to art history for which Rossetti is today chiefly remembered and admired. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London, England, in 1828. As a young man, he briefly studied art with the painter Ford Madox Brown. During the same year (1848), the charismatic Rossetti was to meet fellow artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. This group of friends and colleagues - Rossetti, Hunt, and Millais - would together form the core of the innovative Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (the PRB). The program devised by the members of this group was to have a profound effect on Rossetti's early artistic development, the results of which can be seen in such works as The Girlhood of Mary Virgin and The Annunciation . In time, the painter broke away from the strict demands of the PRB and developed his own unique style. Ultimately, Rossetti's mature works focused on the depiction of stunning images of women.

Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from
He was born Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti in London on May 12, 1828, son of the Italian-born poet Gabriele Rossetti. He was educated there at King's College and the Royal Academy. At the academy he met the painters Sir John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, with whom he founded the "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood". Rossetti was strongly attracted to the dramatic and the supernatural. Among his earliest paintings was a scene of the annunciation, "Ecce Ancilla Domini". His art subsequently developed through other phases, in which the sense of human beauty, intensity of abstract expression, and richness of color were leading elements. Rossetti began writing poetry about the same time that he took to the study of painting. One of his best-known poems, "The Blessed Damozel", was written in 1842. He also made a number of translations from Dante and other Italian writers. Rossetti's later years were marred by sorrow and mental depression. In 1860 he had married a milliner , Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, whom he had been courting for years. He immortalized her beauty in many of his best-known paintings, such as "Regina Cordium". Within two years the invalid Elizabeth died of a laudanum overdose, and Rossetti was grief stricken by the tragedy. In addition he was troubled by a bitter attack that had been made on the morality of his poems in an article entitled "The Fleshy School of Poetry," published in The Contemporary Review in October 1871. Rossetti's rebuttal was published as "The Stealthy School of Criticism" in the Athenaeum in December 1871.

The Van Gogh Museum is open until 10:00 pm every Friday evening. This extension of the opening hours is made possible by the museum's promoting partner Rabobank and the City of Amsterdam Department of Economic Affairs. In addition to the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions, the museum offers a supplementary programme on Friday evenings, presenting something new and special in the museum.
As part of this programme, in September the Van Gogh Museum will be launching a monthly music podium. Every second Friday evening of the month, students and recent graduates of the Conservatory of Amsterdam will have the opportunity of showing off their talent and versatility, ranging from classical music, jazz, world music, old music and pop music. The focus is not only on the music itself, but also the story behind it and, naturally, its presentation.
The exhibition (5 October 2005 - 5 February 2006) is all about the relationship between man and animal. On Friday evenings this theme will be central in meetings with artists, scientists, and in guided tours, lectures and films. Also during the exhibition, every Friday evening in the Van Gogh Museum you can find a suitable date using the animal signs in Chinese astrology. Pick up a button at the information desk with the animal of your birth year and a description of the animal signs you are most compatible with. Now all you have to do is muster up the courage to go up and talk to your

DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI
ROSSETTI, DANTE GABRIEL Found, Rossettis sole contribution of the sort which Mr Holman Hunt affected, was begun somewhere about this period; but this piece of pictorial moralizing (the analogue of the poets own Jenny ), vigorous and intensely pathetic as it is, was never really finished by its author, being, indeed, far remote from Rossettis inner self, which was rather over-scornful of didactic art, and thoroughly indisposed towards attempts to ameliorate anybodys condition by means of pictures. Nor did the stringency of naturalistic painting suit his mood or his experience. Nevertheless, what is his in the existing picture remains a masterpiece of poetry with exquisitely finished parts. (F. G. S.)] Mr W. M. Rossetti (in the Preface to the Collected Works, 1886) has given an interesting account of his brothers literary nurturing. Shakespeare, Walter Scott, Byron, the Bible were the earliest influences: then Shelley, Mrs Browning, the older English and Scottish ballads, and Dante. Afterwards he preferred Keats to Shelley. By 1847 he was deep in Robert Browning. Malorys Monte dArthur, about 1856, engrossed him; Victor Hugo and De Musset, among French poets, were his delight. In his last years he had an enthusiasm f or Chatterton. From childhoods days he had loved to compose, but The Germ (1850) contained Rossettis first published prose or verse. In it appeared The Blessed Damozel, the prose poem Hand and Soul, six sonnets and four lyrics. to the committee on secondary education, which subsidizes science and art classes in various schools and higher grade science schools at Dingwall, Tam and Stornoway.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London, England on May 12, 1828 and died on Easter Day, April 9, 1882. He spent his entire working life in or near the city of his birth, leaving England only three times. Though his work is steeped in Italian traditions, Rossetti never visited Italy. His father was the celebrated Dante scholar and Italian political exile Gabriele Rossetti. His mother, Frances Polidori, was much younger than her husband but also came from a dintinguished and literary family.
Rossetti showed talent even at a young age in writing and painting. He went to Sass's Drawing School in 1841; and in 1845, transferred to the Antique School of the Royal Academy. In 1848, he dropped out of school altogether. But it was an important year that would produce his first important painting as well as some of his literary writings. When he left the school, he apprenticed himself for a short time to Ford Madox Brown. At the 1848 Royal Academy Exhibition, he became enthralled by William Holman Hunt's "Eve of St. Agnes" and struck up a friendship with the painter. Her eyes were deeper than the depth
She had three lilies in her hand,
And the stars in her hair were seven. Her robe, ungirt from clasp to hem,
No wrought flowers did adorn,
For service meetly worn;
Her hair that lay along her back
Was yellow like ripe corn.
The wonder was not yet quite gone
From that still look of hers;
Albeit, to them she left, her day Had counted as ten years. (To one, it is ten years of years. ... Yet now, and in this place, Fell all about my face.... Nothing: the autumn-fall of leaves. Oberlin College, 2000.14 The acquisition of an 1865 albumen photograph with gilded wood frame, titled Jane Morris Standing, in Marquee The Allen's new photograph, Jane Morris Standing, in Marquee , has an interesting history. On July 7, 1865, the English painter and poet Dante Gabrielle Rossetti commissioned the photographer John R. Parsons to create a series of photographs featuring his then-lover and favorite model, Jane Morris. These photographs, which were taken at Rossetti's residence in London, depicted Morris (who was the wife of the well-known Aesthetic Movementartist William Morris) in a variety of poses. The Allen's photograph depicts Jane Morris leaning against a support pole in a large outdoor tent in Rossetti1s garden. Rossetti, who was known to add paint to photographs to enhance their appearance, most likely did the slight re-touching that is evident in Morris' face. The image is enclosed in a frame, the style of which recalls a 15th century Venetian tabernacle. Both the photograph and the frame exemplify the tastes of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, a group of English artists (led by Rossetti) who wanted to recapture the simplicity and realism of early Italian art.
