This is the complete (321 words) free paper for the essay titled THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most successful presidents in American history. He was fun to hang around with. He had a screeching voice that sometimes scared people who did not expect it coming from a man like himself. He told jokes and played with children. He loved children. He told ghost stories that would scare the little children to death. However, he had another side to him. When it was not time for fun and games anymore, he meant it and he did his job well. He took great pride in the United States. He wanted the best for his country and therefore he served his country to the very best of his ability. Roosevelt had a poor health when he was young. His asthma was especially bad. Whenever his asthma acted up on him, his caring father would take young Roosevelt out on the wagon and ride around until he got better. This is where Roosevelt gained his love for nature. He enjoyed being outside. He loved the tranquility of the forest, the animals, the water and such. A particular favorite of his was the bird. He loved the birds. He soon got into studying taxonomy and excelled in it. Roosevelt overcame his poor with many activities as he grew older. He did wrestling, riding, hunting, and swimming. Boxing was one of his favorites sports. He even managed to permanently injure one of his eyes during a boxing match.

No one ever craved the presidency more than Theodore Roosevelt or used its powers more joyously. In early 1901, however, his rise toward that office was suddenly checked. Having gained national prominence as a civil service reformer, hero of the Spanish-American War, and reform-minded governor of New York, he was now relegated to a political backwater as William McKinley's Vice President. But McKinley's assassination several months later changed all of that, and Roosevelt was soon rushing headlong into one of American history's most productive presidencies. By the time he left office in 1909, his accomplishments ranged everywhere from implementing landmark efforts to conserve the nation's disappearing natural heritage, to instituting some of the first significant curbs on the excesses of big business, to building the Panama Canal. Teddy Roosevelt was a vitalizer, an inspirer of movement and optimism in others. "Get action," he trumpeted, "do things, be sane." Taking him to heart as a rousing symbol for youth, the Jacob Riis Settlement House in New York City commissioned Sally Farnham, in 1905, to execute this bronze plaque to fix to the wall of their gymnasium - an unexpected tribute to a President, but for Theodore Roosevelt an entirely appropriate one.

He not only took it seriously but, like everything he did, he acted on his convictions "with vigor." He increased the size of the national forest system by 400%. He set the precedent of using the Antiquities Act of 1906 to create National Monuments, a precedent followed by all subsequent Presidents except Nixon, Regan and Bush. He pursued a balanced approach of preservation and sustained productivity for natural resources such as water and forests. He was a leader in promoting recreation in the wilderness to enhance personal growth. The Grand Canyon was one of the places he saved using the powers granted the president under the Antiquities Act. You have only to imagine the canyon stripped of various layers of history for mining and dotted with high rise hotels to understand why he is honored by the Ecology Hall of Fame. Theodore Roosevelt was, in many ways, one of the most influential and accomplished leaders in American history. The 26th president, known as a "trust buster," broke up some of the nation's largest corporations, helped secure the passage of the Meat Inspection Act for consumer protection, and greatly expanded the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. In foreign affairs, Roosevelt reversed the previous policy of isolationism and ensured the country its place as a world leader. Perhaps his greatest and most lasting contribution was in the area of conservation. Through the creation of national forests, federal bird reservations, and national game preserves, Roosevelt protected more than 200 million acres of land through the federal government.
