THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919)
By Dale L. Walker “IF I HADN’T GONE TO DAKOTA,” Theodore Roosevelt said late in his life, “I would never have become president.” The implications of this powerful statement defy imagining: If he had not ventured West there might not have been a Panama Canal? No trust-busting, “Big Stick” diplomacy, Food and Drug laws, or reclamation acts? No 125 million acres of national forests, fewer national parks and monuments? No “T.R.” to remind us of the days when patriotism, pride of country, and optimism for the future were characteristic of Americans everywhere? A born and bred New Yorker whose Dutch forebears were among the earliest of Manhattan’s settlers, Theodore Roosevelt’s other roots, the Western ones, were much deeper than even his closest associates realized. They were planted in September 1883, when he stepped off the train at the Little Missouri station in Dakota Territory, to join in a buffalo hunt north of the remote town of Medora (in today’s south-western North Dakota). If I hadn’t gone to Dakota, I would never have become president.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919)
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most successful presidents in American history. He was fun to hang around with. He had a screeching voice that sometimes scared people who did not expect it coming from a man like himself. He told jokes and played with children. He loved children. He told ghost stories that would scare the little children to death. However, he had another side to him. When it was not time for fun and games anymore, he meant it and he did his job well. He took great pride in the United States. He wanted the best for his country and therefore he served his country to the very best of his ability.
Roosevelt had a poor health when he was young. His asthma was especially bad. Whenever his asthma acted up on him, his caring father would take young Roosevelt out on the wagon and ride around until he got better. This is where Roosevelt gained his love for nat... "The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, who strive valiantly, who know the great enthusiams, the great devotions, and spend themselves in a worthy cause; who, at the best, know the triumph of high achievement and who, at the worst, if they fail, fail while daring greatly so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." The Man

Theodore Roosevelt, the second of four children, was born on Oct. 27, 1858, in New York City. As a child, he struggled against frailty, nearsightedness and asthma. His love for reading helped foster a love for nature and the outdoors. He also exercised vigorously and developed a lifelong interest in what he called "the strenuous life". He entered Harvard at 18 with the intent of becoming a naturalist. As a senior he began work on a book, "The Naval War of 1812." TR graduated 21st in a class of 177 in 1880 and married Alice Hathaway Lee. After graduation, at the age of 22, Roosevelt joined New York City's 21 District Republican Club and was elected to the New York Assembly. TR's mother died of typhoid in February 1884, and his wife died later the same day of Bright's disease (a kidney ailment) while giving birth to their daughter, Alice. TR left New York to regain his strength and confidence at the Elkhorn Ranch in the North Dakota Badlands. Returning to NYC in 1886, TR ran unsuccessfully for mayor. That year, he married Edith Kermit Carow, who would bear him five children. Political service to Benjamin Harrison won TR a seat on the Civil Service Commission in 1889. He gained national attention by staging a fight against favoritism. TR's position: Jobs should go to the most qualified applicants. In 1895, Roosevelt took the post of NYC Police Commissioner and fought Democrats and Republicans to establish a merit system for appointments and promotions. TR was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897. He immediately began building the strength of the Navy.

Quotations: "To discriminate against a thoroughly upright citizen because he belongs to some particular church, or because, like Abraham Lincoln, he has not avowed his allegiance to any church, is an outrage against that liberty of conscience which is one of the foundations of American life." letter to J. C. Martin, 9 November 1908 "If there is one thing for which we stand in this country, it is for complete religious freedom, and it is an emphatic negation of this right to cross-examine a man on his religion before being willing to support him for office." letter to J. C. Martin, 9 November1908 "I believe that this Republic will endure for many centuries. If so there will doubtless be among its Presidents Protestants and Catholics, and very probably at some time, Jews. I have consistently tried while President to act in relation to my fellow Americans of Catholic faith as I hope that any future President who happens to be Catholic will act towards his fellow Americans of Protestant faith. Had I followed any other course I should have felt that I was unfit to represent the American people." letter to J. C. Martin, 9 November 1908
