Theodore Roosevelt
First as a popular writer, and later as President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt exercised a profound influence on the history of the American West, earning his place among the presidential giants portrayed on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, Roosevelt grew up in a wealthy family long prominent in local civic affairs. He was sickly as a child, suffering especially from asthma, but he early devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. Graduating from Harvard in 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and the next year was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he became a leader among the minority of Republicans who pressed for social reform through government regulation. He first headed West in , drawn to the Dakota Territory by reports that three years of systematic hunting had all but destroyed the once massive buffalo herd of the northern plains. Roosevelt was determined to add this symbol of the American West to his trophy collection before it became extinct, and despite punishing weather, he stayed in the field until he accomplished his goal. At the same time, Roosevelt became enamored of the western landscape and the strenuous outdoor life of the plains, and purchased two ranches in the Dakota Badlands before heading back east.

Theodore Roosevelt 1858-1919
On October 28, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was born into one of the wealthiest and most well-established families in New York. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was a descendant of the original group of Dutch merchants who made their fortunes at building New York harbor into one of the most prosperous ports in America. Theodore Sr. was a gentleman and a glassware merchant. His wife, Martha Bulloch, was descended from the southern "aristocracy" of Georgia. Together, they belonged to the uppermost echelons of New York society. Not at all surrounded by the type of men he would come to champion in years to come, Theodore Jr. was well-positioned to lead a life of privilege and leisure.
Despite the wealth and social position of his family, Roosevelt's young life was far from easy. He chronically suffered from violent attacks of asthma and poor eyesight. Yet his illness inspired him to embrace life all the more fully. To improve his health, he boxed and lifted dumbbells in a room in his home which he had converted into a gymnasium.
During his early years in politics, Roosevelt enjoyed success in his professional life but suffered personal tragedy privately. In 1884 his mother died of typhoid fever. Two days later, his wife died after giving birth to their first child, Alice Lee. Although he would go on to marry Edith K. Carow, a family friend since childhood, he continued to blame himself for his "inconstancy" to the memory of Alice. On second marriages, he wrote, "I have always considered that they argued weakness in man's character. You could not reproach me one-half as bitterly as I reproach myself."

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
Roosevelt was born in 1858 in Manhattan, New York City. As a child, Roosevelt suffered from a series of illnesses, particularly asthma. He did not receive any formal schooling but was educated by private tutors. He entered Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1876. Roosevelt was active in student affairs, both sporting and academic. He completed his degree in 1880. He gained admission to Columbia Law School in New York City but left in 1881 to run for a seat in the New York State assembly. Roosevelt was elected as a Republican and was re-elected in 1882 and 1883. He rose to lead the Republicans in the chamber but left state politics in 1884. After a spell as a cattle rancher in Dakota Territory he returned to New York City to campaign for mayor in 1886 but was defeated. Before re-entering public service in 1889, Roosevelt concentrated on writing. A prolific non-fiction author, Roosevelt wrote nearly 20 books, including a four-volume history of America's westward expansion published from 1889-1896. In 1889 Republican President Benjamin Harrison appointed him as a member to the US Civil Service Commission. In 1895 he became President of the New York City Police Board. Two years later, Republican President William McKinley appointed him Assistant Secretary to the Navy. Roosevelt strongly supported expanding the US's naval power as a means to increase America's presence in world affairs. In 1898 Roosevelt saw combat as commander of the First US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, known as The Rough Riders, in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Rising to the rank of colonel, reports of his leadership and heroism aided Roosevelt's public profile.

Teddy Roosevelt was a weak, asthmatic child who grew up to be one of the most robust and ambitious U.S. presidents ever. A former New York City police commissioner, war hero and author, he reluctantly accepted the offer to become William McKinley 's vice president. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Roosevelt became the youngest man ever to become president. He served two terms, won the Nobel Peace prize in 1905, and strengthened the executive branch through his progressive agenda and the sheer force of his personality. He is often remembered for his policy pronouncement, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." He was succeeded in 1909 by William Howard Taft Roosevelt was the first president to visit a foreign country, Panama, in 1906... He was the 26th president.
