    Nacido en Hyde Park, estado de Nueva York, el 30 de enero de 1882, era primo lejano del también presidente de los Estados Unidos Theodore Roosevelt . Miembro de una familia acomodada, su padre era administrador de varias sociedades y tenía diversas propiedades, mientras que la familia de su madre poseía una empresa naviera y varias minas.     Aunque en la Conferencia Económica Internacional de Londres en 1933 negó el apoyo norteamericano a una política de estabilización monetaria internacional, optando por soluciones de claro nacionalismo económico, Roosevelt fue un hombre claramente preocupado por las cuestiones internacional. Además de lanzar la política de buena vecindad con respecto a Latinoamérica, llegó a acuerdos de estabilización monetaria con Gran Bretaña y Francia en 1936 y reconoció al gobierno de la URSS, algo a lo que se habían negado todos las anteriores administraciones norteamericanas. El dominio de los aislacionistas en el Congreso propició la Ley de Neutralidad de 1935. Aunque Roosevelt la aceptó, ya en 1937 propuso que las naciones amantes de la paz debían establecer una especie de "cuarentena" a las potencias agresoras. Aunque, aparentemente sólo pensaba en la ruptura de relaciones diplomáticas, la reacción en el país fue tan grande y rápida que el presidente debió desdecirse y volver a una política de estricta neutralidad.     De Amerikaanse president Franklin D. Roosevelt werd in 1882 geboren in Hyde Park, New York. Roosevelt studeerde aan de Harvard Universiteit en rechten aan de Columbia Law School. In 1905 trad Franklin in het huwelijk met Eleanor Roosevelt.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt werd in 1910 senator voor de staat New York. Van 1913 tot 1920 maakte Roosevelt als onderminister van Marine deel uit van de regering van Woodrow Wilson. In 1921 werd Franklin D. Roosevelt getroffen door kinderverlamming, waardoor hij zich enkele jaren moest terugtrekken uit de politiek.
    Vanaf 1929 was hij gouverneur van New York. In 1932 won Franklin D. Roosevelt met overmacht de presidentsverkiezingen. Om de hoge werkloosheid terug te dringen ontvouwde hij een jaar later een reeks van plannen, die de naam "New Deal" kreeg. Met een groot aantal wetten trachtte de regering Roosevelt de greep op de economie terug te krijgen. Tevens werd de basis gelegd voor een systeem van sociale zekerheid. Doordat overheidsingrijpen door veel Amerikanen als een zonde werd gezien, konden niet alle hervormingen worden doorgevoerd.
    Hoewel de Amerikaanse politiek zeer gesteld was op haar isolationisme, er was maar weinig belangstelling voor het buitenland, slaagde Franklin D. Roosevelt er toch in om hulp voor Groot-Brittannië op gang te brengen. Begin 1941 werd de Lend-Lease-Act aangenomen, waarbij het de Amerikaanse president werd toegestaan om oorlogsgoederen te leveren aan Engeland en andere landen zonder contante betaling. Uiteraard werden deze goederen alleen geleverd aan landen die belangrijk waren voor de veiligheid van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika.

    * This page is included from the recent book * The American Dreams Collection Special Book Offer Born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882, the son of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt, Franklin was brought up in an aristocratic upper class family. He received most of his early education from his parents and private tutors.
    In his teens he attended the prestigious Groton preparatory school in Massachusetts and then went on to graduate from Harvard University in only three years. He received his BA degree in history. During his college days at Harvard he fell in love with Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, a fifth cousin and they were married in 1905. Their mutual uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt gave the bride away.
