President Franklin D. Roosevelt
American History Study Guide Franklin D. Roosevelt Roosevelt was skilled at building coalitions (alliances of support), often among diverse political groups. He favored frequent experimentation and change when progress stalled. His social programs, called the New Deal, offered relief and jobs to struggling Americans during the Depression. The New Deal also reformed financial practices that had contributed to the Depression. Roosevelt's administration instituted such acts as the Social Security program, which guarantees financial support to Americans upon retirement. The Depression ended as the United States entered World War II in 1941. American industries were revived by manufacturing the materials needed to fight a global war. The large-scale war effort required supervision by many agencies and military d.....

In the midst of World War II, while engaged abroad in a major conflict with Germany and Japan, the United States was also working furiously at home toward the completion of the Manhattan Project. This huge research and development project was begun in June 1942 to develop a superexplosive weapon based on the nuclear fission process. It was hoped that such a superweapon would end the war. Two years before such an experimental atomic bomb was detonated successfully near Alamogordo, New Mexico, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) wrote to J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967), the scientist in charge of its development. The letter is reproduced below. Why was it essential that Oppenheimer's work be kept secret? Why does President Roosevelt not refer to atomic research in his letter? Why do you think President Roosevelt wrote the letter? View the original letter from Words and Deeds in American History . PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Played by Jon Voight in Pearl Harbor
On September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt had been President for almost seven years and was expected to leave office in January 1941. But just as that September changed the world, so did it change the plans of Roosevelt. On September 13 he called Congress into special session to revise the Neutrality Act so that belligerents could purchase U.S. arms on a cash-and-carry basis, allowing U.S. allies to purchase U.S. arms even though U.S. ships were barred from war zones. He hoped that this would give enough help to Britain and France to defeat Germany. But his hope was slight. The United States, he knew, could not long remain on the sidelines of the war. Throughout his presidency, which began slightly more than a month after Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, Roosevelt had seen and feared the growth of militant Germany and Japan. When the war did come he began to speak more harshly about Germany and Japan, but a rise in U.S. military spending did not follow. When Churchill began his confidential correspondence with Roosevelt in September 1939, Roosevelt started getting a private education about the war. Churchill, far more than any domestic advisor, gave Roosevelt the justifications for greatly expanding aid to Britain as part of an overall military buildup.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Home Page Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States (1933-45), greatly expanded the role of the federal government with a wide-ranging economic and social program, the New Deal, designed to counter the Great Depression of the 1930s. he also led the nation through most of its participation in the global struggle of World War II. Early Life Of Dutch and English ancestry, Roosevelt was born on Jan. 30, 1882 at Hyde Park, N.Y., to James Roosevelt, scion of a noted, wealthy family, and his second wife, Sara Delano Roosevelt.
Franlin led a sheltered youth, educated by governesses, his life revolving about the Hyde Park family estate, and rural Dutchess County, trips to Europe, athletics (especially swimming and boating), and hobbies such as stamp and bird collecting.
At the exclusive Groton School (Groton Massachusetts), Franklin was imbued with a sense of social responsibility. He was an average student at Harvard University, edited the Harvard Crimson in his senior year, and after graduation (1903) attended (1904-07) the Columbia Law School. He dropped out of law school upon admissions to the New York bar and worked (1907-1910) for a Wall Street law firm.
Franklin married a distant cousin, a shy young woman, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, on March 17 1905. Their children were Anna Eleanor, James, Elliott, Franklin D. Jr., and John; a sixth child died at infancy
