Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882-1945
It was actually in 1912 that Roosevelt first distinguished himself as a person apart from the ordinary. He had been elected to the New York Senate in 1910; a remarkable feat for a Democrat within the Republican-controlled state. In opposing Tammany Hall's candidate for the United States Senate, Roosevelt gained significant attention as a dissident to machine politics. This surprised many including Louis Howe who was later to become Roosevelt's closest political adviser. Howe first regarded him, with his "patrician nose," privileged name, and aristocratic mannerisms, as a "spoiled silk-pants sort of guy." It was not until Roosevelt challenged party politics that Howe took the interest in him which would become a lifelong devotion.
Howe's first impressions were largely correct. Roosevelt had been born into a class of wealth and leisure. The Roosevelts and the Delanos had long been successful merchants whose descendants enjoyed a prominent place among the "gentry" of the Hudson River. Roosevelt was born in 1882 and grew up in Hyde Park, his family's sprawling estate in New York, as the only child of two doting parents. He was particularly close to his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt. As was expected of a man of his social standing, Roosevelt received an education in the fashion of English gentry. As a child, he was privately tutored in French and Latin while accompanying his family on tours through Europe. At the age of fourteen, he was enrolled at Groton and four years later, at Harvard University. Following the track of an American "aristocrat," he entered Columbia's Law School in 1904 on the path to settling into a privileged and respectable law career.

    Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945)
He raised the edifice of the American Century by restoring a nation's promise of plenty and by intervening to save a world enveloped in darkness
    By Doris Kearns Goodwin
    December 27, 1999
Web posted at: 12:32 p.m. EST (1732 GMT) From Warm Springs, Ga., where he died, the funeral train moved slowly through the rural South to a service in Washington, then past the now thriving cities of the North, and finally to Hyde Park, N.Y., in the Hudson River Valley, where he was born. Wherever it passed, Americans by the hundreds of thousands stood vigil, those who had loved him and those who came to witness a momentous passage in the life of the nation. Men stood with their arms around the shoulders of their wives and mothers. They stood in clusters, heads bowed, openly weeping. They clasped their hands in prayer. A father lifted his son to see the last car, which carried the flag-draped coffin. "I saw everything," the boy said. "That's good," the father said. "Now make sure you remember."

    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 at his parents' estate in Hyde Park, New York. His parents were members of the New York aristocracy. His father, James, was a country gentleman who made money in railroads and coal. His mother, Sara , was a strong-willed woman who adored her only child and remained a central figure in his life until her death in 1941. His father died in 1900. FDR’s childhood in Hyde Park instilled in him a love of the Hudson Valley, farming and rural people. His lifelong interest in forestry helped shape some of the policies and programs of the New Deal, particularly the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). After being educated at home by private tutors, FDR entered Groton, an elite private school in Massachusetts, in 1896. Endicott Peabody , the head of the school, became an important influence in FDR’s life instilling in him a strong sense of civic responsibility. One of the most significant events while he was at Groton was a talk given by his distant cousin

    Roosevelt, Franklin D
, thirty-second president of the United States . Roosevelt was the only president to be elected to more than two terms. Born in Hyde Park, New York, the only child of an old patrician family, Roosevelt was educated at Harvard and entered politics early. He served as assistant secretary of the navy in World War I and in 1920 ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Democratic presidential candidate James Cox. In 1921 he was partially paralyzed from an attack of poliomyelitis. Encouraged to reenter politics by his wife, Eleanor, Roosevelt won the governorship of New York by a narrow margin in 1928 and became the Democratic candidate for president in 1932 in the midst of the Great Depression. Forging a new Democratic coalition among urban voters, immigrants, young first-time voters, blacks, women, the working class, and the southern states, FDR defeated Herbert Hoover in a landslide. Roosevelt promised the American people in his inaugural address a New Deal . His buoyant personality helped restore the country's morale, and he and the many fresh faces he brought to Washington tackled problems of the economy with groundbreaking programs of public works, relief, and reform. Programs and agencies set up under the New Deal included the
