Peter Mark Roget : 1779 - 1869 Peter Mark Roget, an Englishman, theorized in 1824 that the retina of the eye retains an image for a fraction of a second after the image is removed or changed. This persistence of vision can be used to fool the eye into believing a succession of separate and slightly different images to be actually one moving image. Toys to exploit "persistence of vision" by animating drawings were then "invented" by men like John Ayrton Paris (English), 1824, Joseph Plateau (Belgian) and Simon von Stampfer (German), 1832. In 1852, Franz von Uchatius , another German, put an animated strip of drawing (done on glass) into a magic lantern and projected the resulting moving image onto a screen.
Source: Winston, Brian How is Media Born? Seeing movement from still pictures is possible because of persistence of vision. A Czech inventor, J. E. Purkyne , first discussed persistence of vision in 1818 but it was Peter Mark Roget 's paper to the British Royal Society on persistence of vision presented in 1824 brought it to attention. Persistence of vision is according to Roget was...

The term came into widespread use towards the end of the 1890s among linguists and scientists. Classicists use the term "Neo-Latin" to describe the use of the Latin language for any purpose, scientific or literary, after the Renaissance (for which purpose they often use the date 1600), although, for example, the editors of the I Tatti Renaissance Library call their Renaissance Latin language texts Neo-Latin as well. Peter Mark Roget
The author of the "Treasury of Words" could hardly have thought that his name would become forever associated with a particular book, even though he hoped that he was suggesting a unique way of utilizing the richness and flexibility of the English language. But for almost 150 years Roget's work has been the constant companion of all those who aspire to use the language most effectively. The career of Peter Mark Roget prior to the publication of his Thesaurus in 1852 when he was 73 years old, while largely devoted to science and to medicine, required of him a facility with words in the delivery of ideas and concepts. A lifetime of secretaryships for several learned societies had thoroughly familiarized him with the need for clarity and forcefulness of expression. That he was justified in his concept is made obvious by the universal acceptance of his thesaurus as an indispensable tool for all those who wish to write and speak with eloquence. In the midst of his desultory round of attendance at lectures and dispensary duties, Roget learned that his uncle had maneuvered for him an opportunity to tutor two scions of a wealthy Manchester manufacturer on a grand tour of Europe. The Peace of Amiens had been signed in 1802 and continental travel was once again open to English families anxious to provide their children with the advantages of foreign scenes.

The first draft of the Thesaurus was written in 1805, two years before Webster started on his dictionary. However, for a period of 47 years, Dr Roget used his manuscript as his personal, secret, treasure trove. Not until he was 73 years old did he decide to reveal and publish this great manuscript. He was first educated at the free school of Sandbach, Cheshire, and then from 1797 at Macclesfield Grammar School. He entered Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1806. He graduated BA in 1810 and began his medical studies at St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Carey Street Public Dispensary under the tutelage of Thomas Bateman, dermatologist and physician. Latham took a house in Gower Street and in 1815 was appointed physician to the Middlesex Hospital. In 1816 he delivered a course of lectures on the practice of physic in London. He graduated MD in the same year. Latham was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1818, and delivered the College's Goulstonian Lectures the following year. In 1820 he was a censor for the College, and held that office again in 1833 and 1837. In March 1823 he and Peter Mark Roget, fellow physician and savant, were asked by the government to undertake the investigation of an epidemic disorder then rife in the Millbank Penitentiary. They found the epidemic to be scurvy and dysentery, which they concluded was due to an insufficient diet. Consequently they recommended for the prisoners at least one solid meal a day, better bread, and 3lbs of meat every fortnight. Latham subsequently published
