Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) was typical of his time. Trained as a physician, he did not limit himself to the practice of medicine; he also lectured and wrote on scientific subjects. He became Fellow of the Royal Society, and served as its secretary for many years. Roget, however, was no elitist; he founded the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge to spread learning as widely as possible. In creating his thesaurus, Roget's purpose was to turn the dictionary upside down. Given a word, a dictionary provides its meaning. Roget had something else in mind. "The object aimed at in the present undertaking is exactly the converse of this: namely, the idea being given, to find the word, or words, by which that idea may be most fitly and aptly expressed." That, of course, is the goal of every serious writer, whether technical communicator or poet. The core of his thesaurus is nothing less than a taxonomy of ideas, a method of categorizing concepts analogous to the phylogenetic hierarchy used in biology. He established six primary classes, ranging from Abstract Relations to Sentiment and Moral Powers, with each class further subdivided. At the final level are lists of related words. In the back of the book, the Index Guide gives a quick way of getting to a list related to the idea you want to find a word for. Then it's up to you to decide which word is the best fit. The search for the perfect word can move back and forth among index, categories, and cross-references, approaching a hard-copy counterpart of being lost in hyperspace.

First Professor of English
Though it is common for one academic generation’s leaders to be eclipsed by succeeding generations, some groundbreaking researchers have been so instrumental in advancing the profession that it is imperative they be remembered. Francis Andrew March (1825-1911), distinguished American philologist, lexicographer, educator, and professor of English at Lafayette College, is such a figure. For March in his day was preeminent among both American academicians and scholars of language. Note these specifics:
  • He was the first to hold the title “Professor of English Language and Literature” anywhere in the United States or Europe.

Inevitably these categories are somewhat arbitrary so use of the index page and / or the Search facility is recommended.

With the notable exception of hermits and some elected officials, humans rely heavily upon words to communicate with each other. Physicians, more than most professionals, depend upon language to understand the ailments of their patients and then to provide instructions which may diminish or abolish their distress. Words, accurately chosen and unambiguously conveyed, then become the essential currency in the effective patient-physician relationship. It should not come as a surprise, therefore, to encounter amongst the population of physicians those who are gifted with words, who cherish words, and who may even make it their business to study their origins, their subtleties and nuances. And some physicians have ventured one step further in abandoning medicine to take up the thankless task of full-time writing. In truth, not many actually stray from medicine, the rate of truancy being low; yet a small number of these delinquents have achieved notable success as users of words.

Peter Mark Roget (1779 - 1869)
By the age of fourteen Roget was studying medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating five years later to tutor the children of a wealthy merchant from Manchester. From 1808-40 he concentrated on medicine, paying particular attention to the senses. During this time, in 1814, he also invented what he called a 'log-log' slide rule to calculate the roots and powers of numbers. This formed the basis of slide rules that were common currency in schools and universities until the age of the calculator over 150 years later. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society the following year. In 1824 he wrote a paper describing an optical illusion he had noticed while watching the wheels of a horse drawn carriage through the blinds of a window. The illusion - 'the Persistence of Vision' - allows us to see a succession of still images as a continuous, moving picture, and it is this that makes cinema and television work. Roget studied the phenomenon with a simple device he built himself. When he set it running very slowly the tiny part of a spoke that was visible through a vertical slot was a moving point but, as its speed increased, he began to see the whole spoke. Moreover, the spokes - in reality perfectly straight - appeared curved and, with the exception of the two vertical spokes, they all curved downward.
