Thesaurus means "treasure house" in Latin and so it seems apt that the origins of this handy writer's tool lie some two hundred years in the past, in the prison cell of an Englishman named Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) to be more precise. His predicament gives rise to the intriguing image of an unlucky burglar/writer patiently plotting his heist for when he breaks out of his jail (writer's) block unknowing that he is, like all of us, a prisoner of language and can never escape.
However, the truth is that for political reasons, Rogeta quiet and honest studentwas unfairly thrown into prison for a year. To pass the time and to keep his wits he turned his philosophically inclined mind to constructing a list of one thousand terms to use as a "repertory" of words embodying ideas. After his release he went on to become a successful physician and scholar and continued to add words and phrases to his list throughout his long life.
In 1852, after he'd retired, Roget published this list as the first Roget's Thesaurus and it was an immediate bestsellernot with philosophers as he'd intended, but with writers who immediately used it to enhance their writing skills. To this day there are not only the descendants of the original work but myriad printed texts using the generic term "thesaurus" published by others as well as electronic versions included in major word publishing applications.

History of the Royal Society of Medicine
History of the RSM The RSM Coat of Arms The History of the Royal Society of Medicine book
The origins of the Royal Society of Medicine date back to the 18th century when, throughout Europe and also in Great Britain, medical societies began to be founded with the object of bringing together physicians and surgeons in order to further scientific, professional and social communication. The Medical and Chirurgical Society of London was founded “for the purpose of conversation on professional subjects, for the reception of communications and for the formation of a library" and served “several branches of the medical profession”. The leading light among this dissenting group was Sir William Saunders FRCP (1743-1817), who was elected first President of the Medical and Chirurgical Society. Other founding members included: Dr John Yelloly MD FRS (1774-1842), one of the first pair of Honorary Secretaries; Sir Astley Paston Cooper Bt FRCS (1768-1841), the first Treasurer and Dr Alexander Marcet MD FRS (1770-1822), the first Foreign Secretary. Trustees included Mr John Abernethy FRCS (1764-1831) and Dr Mathew Baillie FRCP (1761-1823).

DOROTHY ROSE BLUMBERG'S 5 BEST ODDITIES Roget's Thesaurus. "A collection of English words and phrases arranged according to the ideas they express, rather than in alphabetical order, published in 1852 by the English physician and lecturer Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), and offered 'to facilitate the expression of ideas and to assist in literary composition.' "As Roget noted in the introduction to the 1st edition of the Thesaurus, his was not the 1st attempt at such a compilation. The earliest, dating from about the 10th century, is the Amera Cosha, or Vocabulary of the Sanskrit Language (a translation was published in 1808), somewhat confused but 'exhibiting a remarkable effort at analysis at so remote a period of Indian literature.' A more orderly classification, in Roget's opinion, was to be found in the 17th-century work of Bishop John Wilkins, An Essay towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language; but the schema of symbols that accompanied it was too complicated and artificial to be useful. The same criticism applied to an anonymous French work that appeared in 1797. "In his own system Roget took the classifications of natural history as his guiding principle. Words were divided into categories in the same way that plants and animals had been divided into families. As genus branched off into related but differing species, so the meanings of words shaded into other meanings related but not the same. A particular innovation was the inclusion of phrases synonymous with single words for which no individual or one-word synonyms existed.

This is where I got my giant dictionary and Roget’s Thesaurus. That’s how I’ve aquired many of my reference books because I never can justify paying full price for them at the bookstore. Which is foolish because I use both of these books more than any other book I own. They would have been well worth the full purchase price. I wonder if Peter Mark Roget's book is the longest selling book next to the Bible? Published in 1852, it continues to serve as the top resource for those devoted to using the English language effectively. Need ideas for your novel? You don’t have one started but you need an idea for a book? Pick up a good sized Thesaurus. I use a large hard cover Roget’s International Thesaurus 5th Edition. It’s thumb indexed, its great. Flip through a book this size and start reading. It’s so inspiring. Words lead to more words and more words. Meanings and descriptions and images cruise through your imagination. It's very thought provoking. For example: I’m thumb through and find the word “full-blooded”.

Ain't It Cool News reports that Spielberg himself confirmed a Goonies sequel is in the works while visiting USC film school. They said: "He tackled many questions about his past films... technique and such. But what sparked my interest was a question regarding the Goonies. Someone asked about a sequel, and he did in fact CONFIRM that a sequel was in pre-pre production... meaning that it is in development with Spielberg involved (executive producing again) and ALL cast members returning. The story would have their children dabbling in adventures ALONG with their parents. He didn't elaborate too much on the story... just confirming that the sequel was in the works and WOULD BE MADE." Loved the first one, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with this one. posted by JK - 6:38 AM Link to this entry

The structure of this thesaurus This thesaurus is based on Dr Peter Mark Roget's classification structure for his thesaurus. To use a cliche there seemed little point in reinventing the wheel by devising a new classification structure. First appearing in 1852, Roget's Thesaurus had taken him more than 40 years to write. Below is a facsimile of the first page of Roget's manuscript.
