Mary Roberts Rinehart 1876-1958

Mary Ella Roberts was born on August 12,1876 near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her parents, Tom and Cornelia were still living in his mother's house with five other family members. Shortly after her sister OLIVE was born, they moved into a home of their own just down the street. At fifteen, her career was foreshadowed when she had three short stories published in a local magazine for a dollar each. When she was seventeen, she applied to nursing school and also met a young doctor by the name of Stanley Marshall Rinehart. They married when she was nineteen. Mary found herself in the role of homemaker and a baby boy was soon on the way. Stanley Jr. was born in 1897. Her second son, Alan, arrived in 1900 and her third son, Ted, was born in 1902. One of the side effects of her pregnancies was constant nausea and she became very weak. Dr. Rinehart's half-brother, head of the hospital where she had been a nurse decided to try to feed her broiled lobster, bits at a time. By miracle this stayed down. This experience with lobsters served her well when she came to Bar Harbor.

Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was an American novelist and playwright best known for her mystery stories. Rinehart's work is very different from the cliches of Rinehart criticism. It has a lot in common with hard-boiled school, in both style and subject. It also is part of the American school of "scientific" detection. In fact, all three groups, scientific, hard-boiled, and Rinehart show common features. They form an American school that mixes adventure and detection. There is an attempt at realism in the depiction of modern life, with many different classes, corruption high and low, and a great diversity of characters. Her most memorable tales combined murder, love, ingenuity, and humor in a style that was distinctly her own. While her general novels were her best-selling books, she was most highly regarded by critics for her carefully plotted murder mysteries. It was one of her books that produced the phrase, "The butler did it," and in her prime, she was more famous than her chief rival, England's Agatha Christie. Her autobiography, My Story, appeared in 1931 and was revised in 1948. At Rinehart's death her books had sold more than 10 million copies.

Mary Roberts Rinehart - (1876-1958) Allegheny By James Cooper I. Biography Mary Roberts Rinehart was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh) on August 12, 1876, and she died September 22, 1958. She was born left-handed, in the days when this was looked upon as irrational and unladylike. To make her use her right hand, she had her left hand tied behind her back. During her lifetime, she was a very successful mystery writer and playwright. Rinehart lived in Allegheny for most of her life, and wrote most of her mystery stories in Allegheny. Rinehart got her first start in writing when she was in high school. She sold a couple of stories to a local newspaper for a dollar a piece, and had them published in the newspaper. The Circular Staircase , took place in Pittsburgh and for the first time showed how mystery and comedy could flow together. Her mystery stories were so good and well liked that she was compared to one of the most recognized mystery writers ever, Agatha Christie. Her mystery stories were not only compared to those of Agatha Christie, in her prime her writings were rated over Christie. Rinehart's stories had a tendency to be very well-liked. It was because of this reason that Rinehart had one of her stories turned into a play. The story was originally called

  • Pennsylvania: By the Book
By Cheryl A. Petersohn Pennsylvania was founded by an author who got into trouble for his writings. No wonder this state has such a distinguished literary heritage. The Keystone State provides rich natural and intellectual resources, a varied but essentially moderate climate, and room to grow. Since its founding in 1682 by William Penn, himself the author of more than one hundred books and pamphlets supporting religious toleration, Pennsylvania has been home to countless writers. Penn's "Holy Experiment," planned to be an ideal commonwealth in America away from religious persecution, has a long history of authors whose works promote free expression of ideas and creative experimentation. This short overview of Pennsylvania authors can merely scratch the surface of a literary history that favorably follows in the footsteps of Penn's most famous work, The Great Cause of Liberty of Conscience.

    Jan Cohn
"She [Cohn] is particularly sensitive to recurrent motifs and issues in the large corpus of Rinehart's work, and that sensitivity, together with the chronological bibliography appended to the study, will be welcomed by avid readers of mystery or suspense fiction as well as by specialists in popular literature and culture. On the whole, this biography is well done: it is at once scholarly and popular, and it is therefore suited for large academic libararies and public libraries with good collections of Rinehart's work."
    Choice
"This is the impeccably researched story of a prolific writer. Jan Cohn . . . utilizes archival sources, materials from Rinehart's friends and family, and in-depth interviews with Rinehart's two sons (the founders of Farrar & Rinehart Publishing in New York City) in this lucid biography."
Best Sellers "This detailed, well-annotated account of Rinehart's public and private lives will complement a library's collection."

    The Breaking Point
Where There's A Will Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958)
American novelist and playwright best known for her mystery stories. Rinehart served as a war correspondent during World War I and later described her experiences in several books, notably Kings, Queens and Pawns (1915). She produced as well a number of romances and nine plays. Most of the plays were written in collaboration with Avery Hopwood; her greatest successes were Seven Days, produced in New York in 1909, and The Bat, derived from The Circular Staircase and produced in 1920. She remained best known, however, as a writer of mysteries, and the growing popularity of that genre after World War II led to frequent republication of her works. Her most memorable tales combined murder, love, ingenuity, and humour in a style that was distinctly her own. Her autobiography, My Story, appeared in 1931 and was revised in 1948. At Rinehart's death her books had sold more than 10 million copies.
