James Whitcomb Riley
Her Beautiful Hands O YOUR HANDS they are strangely fair!
Fair for the jewels that sparkle there,
Fair for the witchery of the spell
That ivory keys alone can tell;
But when their' delicate touches rest
Here in my own do I love them best,
As I clasp with eager, acquisitive spans
My glorious treasure of beautiful hands!
Marvelous wonderful beautiful hands!
They can coax roses to bloom in the strands
Of your brown tresses;and ribbons will twine, Under mysterious touches of thine, Into such knots as entangle the soul And fetter the heart under such a control As only the strength of my love understands My passionate love for your beautiful hands. As I remember the first fair touch Of those beautiful hands that I love so much, I seem to thrill as I then was thrilled, Kissing the glove that I found unfilled When I met your gaze, and the queenly bow, As you said to me, laughingly, "Keep it now!". . . And dazed and alone in a dream I stand, Kissing this ghost of your beautiful hand. When first I loved, in the long ago, And held your hand as I told you so Pressed and caressed it and gave it a kiss And said "I could die for a hand like this!"

by James Whitcomb Riley
I An alien wind that blew and blew
Over the fields where the ripe grain grew, Sending ripples of shine and shade
That crept and crouched at her feet and played. The sea-like summer washed the moss
Till the sun-drenched lilies hung like floss, Draping the throne of green and gold
That lulled her there like a queen of old. II Was it the hum of a bumblebee,
Or the long-hushed bugle eerily Winding a call to the daring Prince
Lost in the wood long ages since? A dim old wood, with a palace rare
Hidden away in its depths somewhere! Was it the Princess, tranced in sleep,
Awaiting her lover's touch to leap Into the arms that bent above? To thaw his heart with the breath of love And cloy his lips, through her waking tears

(0.25 linear feet) B W15a American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A prime exponent of evolutionary theory in the late nineteenth century, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace arrived independently at the theory of natural selection nearly simultaneously with Charles Darwin. The numerous publications that emerged from his extended field excusions into the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia) Wallace resulted in major contributions to evolutionary theory, biogeography, ecology, and ethnography, and made Wallace, by the end of his life, one of the best known naturalists in Britain. A Socialist, social progressive, and Spiritualist, Wallace's distinctive take on evolutionary change differed from the Darwinian mainstream in significant ways. The Wallace Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of letters written by and to Alfred Russel Wallace, primarily during the last twenty five years of his life. Varied in content, the letters touch on Wallace's views on evolution, Spiritualism, and to a less degree, his progressive social commitments.
