Continuous, unflagging effort, persistence and determination will win. Let not the man be discouraged who has these.
Riley, James Whitcomb
Perseverance

The most essential factor is persistence the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come.
Riley, James Whitcomb
Perseverance

It doesn't pay to say too much when you are mad enough to choke. For the word that stings the deepest is the word that is never spoke, Let the other fellow wrangle till the storm has blown away, then he'll do a heap of thinking about the things you didn't say.
Riley, James Whitcomb

Little Orphant Annie
by James Whitcomb Riley, A.D. 1849-1916,
of Greenfield, Indiana
This poem is one that my Grandma, Dorothy Wood, R.I.P., and her child-loving brother, Ferman Pruett, R.I.P., both had memorized to tell us children on Hallowe'en. I hope your children love it as much as we did when we were little! It was written by "The Hoosier Poet," James Whitcomb Riley, and so recalls the old Hoosier vernacular. It is the perfect poem to remind children of the reality of the Evil One's minions and the importance of being good.
I recommend recounting it by the light of a single candle, as you are all sitting close together. Tell it in a dramatic, fearful, admonishing voice with a twangy Hoosier accent... All story-telling is best done if the work is memorized, so that nothing comes between you and your audience; if you can tell this poem by heart, all the better. And if you want to tell it like my Granny and Uncle did, make sure you pause a dramatic beat after each "don't" and "watch": To download this poem in Microsoft Word .doc format

. The sole monument to Indiana's centennial still standing is our State Parks. They were created in 1916, largely through the efforts of one man: Richard Lieber. This is both his story and the story origin of our State Parks and Department of Natural Resources. It is also a snapshot of another time. In this engaging, participatory story, listeners are guided back into the moment when the Parks began. A live auction is re-created (using students/teachers as bidders), at which our first State Park was bid upon, lost, nearly ruined, and regained. Entwined with this presentation is a reverence for the natural world around us, a portrait of German immigrants in Indianapolis, and a subtle mystery puzzle that, in due course, reveals an intriguing symbol of hope.

Grandma As Part of the Food Chain Supposedly this tale became popular at the end of World War II when powdered foods first became widely available and were sometimes included in relief packages sent to war-ravaged European nations. The tale appeared in various settings, with Grandma usually dying in Canada or the United States and her cremated remains being shipped to kitchens in European countries. In a few versions of the Grandma's-ashes tales, the recipients didn't like the taste. In some the food tasted "gorgeous." The Web site www.urbanlegends.com says that the story of Grandma's ashes is in the same tradition as the "tapping the Admiral" story of the British navy. In that story, Admiral Nelson died at sea, and his body was put in a cask of rum so that the alcohol would preserve it; when the ship reached port, there was no rum left. Apparently to this day British seamen use the term "tapping the admiral" for "having a drink."
