Name: James Whitcomb Riley Birth Date: October 7, 1849 Death Date: July 22, 1916 Place of Birth: Greenfield, Indiana, United States Place of Death: Indianapolis, Indiana, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: poet James Whitcomb Riley Main Biography American poet James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), often called the "People's Laureate" or the "Hoosier Poet," established a reputation for dialect poetry designed for recitation and easy reading. James Whitcomb Riley was born on Oct. 7, 1849, in Greenfield, Ind. His father, a successful small-town lawyer, allowed him to shape his education by instinct rather than formal precedents. Oratory, drama, painting, and music took James's earliest attention. He idolized Charles Dickens. Poets Robert Burns, for dialect verse, and Henry Longfellow, for moral precepts, were his models. Young Riley wrote voluminously and saved every scrap, particularly the local-color sketches, incorporating anecdotes he heard from the country people around the courthouse. His musical ear was good; he played the violin, guitar, and banjo. His verbal ear was even better. At the age of 16 Riley left school to become a "house, sign, and ornamental painter," wandering around Indiana. He read law for a while but took to the road with a traveling medicine man from whose wagon he learned to entertain the public with recitations in dialect. When he returned to Greenfield, he started a career in journalism, beginning with the local paper and expanding his horizons gradually. At one time he was local editor of the

Subsequently he acted in a patent-medicine show and worked for a newspaper. From 1877 to 1885 he was a regular contributor of verse to the Indianapolis Journal under the pen name of Benj. F. His best-known poems include “Little Orphant Annie,””The Raggedy Man,” and “When the Frost Is on the Punkin.” Riley's popularity derived mainly from his quaint use of Hoosier dialect, his cheerful and whimsical sense of humor, and his intimate understanding of life in the rural Midwest. OUR HIRED GIRL by: James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916)
    UR hired girl, she's 'Lizabuth Ann;
    An' she can cook best things to eat!
    She ist puts dough in our pie-pan,
    An' pours in somepin' 'at's good an' sweet;
    An' nen she salts it all on top
    With cinnamon; an' nen she'll stop
    An' stoop an' slide it, ist as slow,
    In th' old cook-stove, so's 'twon't slop
    An' git all spilled; nen bakes it, so
    It's custard-pie, first thing you know!
    An' nen she'll say,

    They's time fer work, an' time fer play!
    Take yer dough, an' run, child, run!

    An' says folks got to walk the chalk
    When she's around, er wisht they had!
    I play out on our porch an' talk
    To Th' Raggedy Man 'at mows our lawn;
    An' he says, "Whew!" an' nen leans on
    His old crook-scythe, and blinks his eyes,
    An' sniffs all 'round an' says, "I swawn!
    Ef my old nose don't tell me lies,
    It 'pears like I smell custard-pies!"
    An' nen he'll say

One of the most popular poets in American history, James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield, Indiana, the second son and third of six children raised by Reuben A.(a Civil War veteran and lawyer)and Elizabeth (Marine) Riley.
    At an early age Riley discovered that he disliked the "iron discipline" of school life but enjoyed books. As a child, Riley often accompanied his father (a noted political orator) on trips to the Hancock County courthouse, where he observed the manners and mores of country society, as well as the countrified dialect he later used in his poetry.
    In his own words he did a little of a number of things fairly well. He sang, played the guitar and violin, acted, painted signs and wrote poetry. His father did not encourage his verse-making for he thought it too visionary, and being a visionary himself, he believed he understood the dangers of following the promptings of the poetic temperament. He doubted if anything would come of the verse-writing himself.

James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was born in Greenfield Indiana. He was a regular contributor of poetry to the Indianapolis Daily Journal. In his writing, Riley recorded the speech of a community of rural speakers of the Hoosier dialect.
The Tree-Toad
"Scur'ous-like," said the tree-toad,
"I've twittered fer rain all day;
And I got up soon,
And hollered tel noon
But the sun, hit blazed away,
Tel I jest clumb down in a crawfish-hole,
Weary at hart, and sick at soul! "Dozed away fer an hour,
And I tackled the thing ag'in:
And I sung, and sung,
Tel I knowed my lung,
Was jest about give in; And then , thinks I, ef hit don't rain now They's nothin' in singin', anyhow! "Once't in a while some farmer, Would come a-drivin' past; And he'd hear my cry, And stop and sigh Tel I jest laid back, at last, And I hollered rain tel I thought my th'oat Would bust wide open at ever' note! "But I fetched her!O I fetched her! 'Cause a little while ago, As I kindo' set, With one eye shet, And a-singin' soft and low

As we used to talk together of the future we had planned,
When I should be a poet, and with nothing else to do
But write the tender verses that she set the music to . . . Then we should live together in a cozy little cot
Hid in a nest of roses, with a fairy garden spot,
Where the vines were ever fruited, and the weather ever fine,
