    RELIGION PART II
Faithful readers will recall that, in last quarter's selection , I promised a second chapter of quotations on religion. My foray into researching Jewish women over the last couple of years for my latest book, The Quotable Jewish Woman , stimulated me into exploring what women of other faiths and other paths might have to say about the subject. I found so many, one quarter's posting just wasn't enough. The following selection is from women ranging from an ancient Roman mathematician to seventeenth century playwrights to contemporary Christians and Jews, as well as other paths. Their thoughts and beliefs are as diverse as you might suspect, considering the range of time and practice. Religion is such a big topic today. From considerations of what impact the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had on those of the Muslim faith to the conflict between mostly Muslim Palestinians and mostly Jewish Israelis, from our own nation's religious right to the rise of New Age spirituality.

    RELIGION
Religion is a subject that has often baffled me. Since young adulthood, I have thought of myself as a pantheist, a neo-pagan, if you will, more than anything: one who believes in the power, wonder and forces of nature, one who reveres her Mother Earth. And I know that faith has sustained me many a time. So I believe faith is an important aspect in our lives. But faith in an anthropomorphic God, one in whose image we have been made, has troubled me since I was in Sunday School. So many women I greatly admire and respect believe passionately in the existence of a biblical god. I wanted to take a look at what they had to say about their beliefs. I was surprised and overwhelmed with the size and strength of what I found-so much so, that I am doing this collection in two parts, the next to be posted next quarter. Now, with the holidays swiftly approaching, it felt like the right time to share some of what I found with you.

"The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club"
    Title ~ the Bellona Club
So, what is a Bellona anyway? It is the name for the Roman Goddess of war, either the wife or sister of Mars, and an appropriate name for a story set in a club in which so many of its members were veterans. 6 ~ (From the "Who's Who" entry on Lord Peter) "The Murderer's Vade-Mecum"
The phrase is from the Latin for "go with me," and refers to a useful book that one carries around constantly. This leads to some speculation as to the nature of Wimsey's book. What kind of book would a murderer need to carry around? One which offers advice on how best to kill someone and get away with it? Arms: Sable, 3 mice courant, argent; crest, a domestic cat couched as to spring, proper; motto: As my Whimsy takes me
As I learned from my time spent in the Society for Creative Anachronism (a medieval re-creation group), coats of arms have to be described by words to ensure that they are represented properly, and that they don't conflict with someone else's arms. So precise terms were developed to describe, and since the French were largely responsible for this, French words were used.
