To Cariboo and Back/By/M. Ella Chaffey/ [ornament] /COLUMBUS, OHIO/THE BOOK CONCERN/ [19?] [all within a dbl. border]. As the book's title suggests, gold-panning in the Cariboo is the centrepiece of the story. However, the plot is less conventional than most such tales with the addition of a small girl, a lost will and some background of urban Toronto in 1858 and 1867. The Preface is dedicated: 'To Boy who once lived in British Columbia and now lives in California. "Lest he forget"'. 382 [ornament] /TALES/OF/THE NORTHERN SEAS./ [pict. ornament] /London:/THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY;/56, PATERNOSTER ROW; 65, ST. The contents include a description of the land around the North Pole, an account of 'Esquimaux' life and whaling in Baffin Bay. Each chapter ends with a brief, religious homily as befits a Religious Tract Society author. 383 [WALSHE, Elizabeth Hely].

His wife was Alice Hegan Rice (18701942), author of the turn-of-the-century best Its architect, Arthur Loomis, also designed the Conrad-Caldwell House.

Old Louisville Walking Tour
CENTRAL PARK SOUTH
From the Old Louisville Information Center building, head south and cross Magnolia Avenue to the West side of St James Court, which is where our tour Begins. Continue south on St. James Court to Belgravia Court. See area map.
The Southern Exposition of 1883 (picture ) covered approximately 40 acres, which included what is now Central Park and St. James, Belgravia, and Fountain Courts. William H. Slaughter bought the area south of Central Park after the exposition closed in 1887 and formed the Victoria Land Company, which sold the property lots. Slaughter designed the center greens and ordered the fountain and lions. The two resting lions at each end of the Court were to "guard" Magnolia (then called Victoria Place) at Sixth Street. Picture, early St. James Court
It is 1903 and the evening is warm for October. The premiere of "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" has been a smashing success. Mrs. Rice made a lovely speech afterward. Now it's time to end an already unforgettable evening by attending the reception at the Conrad's.
There's Sarah Henning from Fourth Avenue going up the walk, and here come the Moxleys from Belgravia Court. Do you have your invitation? The Butler is opening the door. Let's go in!

¡¡Alice Caldwell Hegan
¡¡Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice (1870-1942) was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and moved to Louisville, where she performed charitable and social work. She married Cale Young Rice, a poet and dramatist, in 1902. Alice wrote two dozen works, some with her husband, before passing away; her husband commit suicide soon after her death.
¡¡A 1902 bestseller, Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch is a memorable tale of a family struggling against all odds in the Louisville slums. This hopeful story follows the Wiggs as they face eviction from their dilapidated house and come to give refuge to two orphanage fugitives. Immensely popular, this novel has inspired plays, movies, including one starring W.C. Fields, and dolls.
