October 1998
Introduction
This index is chiefly compiled from the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies 39, 1994, pp. 185-230 and 41, 1996, pp. 151-92 (the latter's year, noted in the body of this text), and the American Philological Association Newsletter 17.4, Aug. 1994, p. 22; 18.4, Aug. 1995, pp. 8-12; 19.3, June 1996, pp. 14-21 (corrections, 19.4, Aug. 1996, p. 6); 20.3, June 1997 [the last's date, noted in the body of this text]; 21.4, August 1998, pp. 12-19. In the hope of rendering the index the more useful, theses and dissertations at times are listed under more than one heading. An asterisk preceding an entry means that the thesis or dissertation is reported to have been completed. In preparing this index the compiler has occasionally been compelled to conjecture the subject-matter of the thesis or dissertation. The table of contents will, it is hoped, permit the reader at any rate to discover desired sections with ease; that some of the sections are complexly organised may be seen from two detailed analysis provided (art; literature, Greek).

PALAEOGRAPHY
PALAEOGRAPHY The scope of this article is to trace the history of Greek and Latin palaeography from the earliest written documents in those languages which have survived. In Greek palaeography we have a subject which is self-contained. The Greek character, in its pure form, was used for one language only; but the universal study of that language throughout Europe and the wide diffusion of its literature have been the cause of the accumulation of Greek MSS. in every centre of learning. The field of Latin palaeography is much wider, for the Roman alphabet has made its way into every country of western Europe, and the study of its various developments and changes is essential for a proper understanding of the character which we write. Bearing in mind these natural changes, it is evident that a style of writing, once developed, is best at the period when it is in general use, and that the oldest examples of that period are the simplest, in which vigour and naturalness of handwriting are predominant. On the other hand, the fine execution of a MS. after the best period of the style has passed cannot conceal deterioration. The imitative nature of the calligraphy is detected both by the general impression on the eye, and by uncertainty and inconsistencies in the forms of letters. It is from a failure to keep in mind the natural Jaws of development and change that early dates, to which they have no title, have been given to imitative MSS.; and, on the other band, even very ancient examples have been post-dated in an incredible manner.

Homeric scholarship owes a great debt to Professor Joachim Latacz, one of the most authoritative figures in the field, who enjoys the respect and admiration of both colleagues and students. His attempt to make Homer' s epics speak directly to present-day readers by elucidating the features of the epic composition make his work invaluable. The present volume is dedicated to him on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The eighteen essays included cover a wide range of subjects on classical antiquity the last one even reaches to the Middle Ages. All of them, contributed by competent specialists, meet the expectations of the most demanding reader and examine the most recent results on the topics under discussion. Thus, the book, primarily of interest to scholars, also provides the opportunity to undergraduates and postgraduates to view the current condition of classical studies. Franco Montanari concludes the first section of the book with an article on the Alexandrian Homeric philology ("La filologia omerica antica e la storia del testo omerico").

Sean Hannity Discussion Discussion Topics Religion PDA View Full Version : Prayers for the Dead whosurdaddy April 22nd, 2005, 11:11 AM Prayers for the dead, in the Roman Church, are a natural accompaniment of
the doctrine of purgatory. But prayers for the dead are practiced by some people entirely separate and apart from the thought of purgatory.
It can be proven that prayers for the dead are contrary to the Christian religion as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ and by His apostles, and as set forth in the Bible.
We should not pray for the dead, because the Bible teaches us that the opportunity to repent and to accept Jesus Christ is given to men in this life only, so that the dead can not repent and turn to Christ. The spiritual condition of men is fixed forever at death, and can never be changed afterward. Prayers for the dead are sinful, because these prayers disregard and defy the teachings and warnings of Jesus Christ as to the necessity of repentance from sin and acceptance of Him in this life.
Prayers for the dead are sinful because at the last day we will be judged according to the things we have done in the body here on earth - not according to things done in the spirit after we die and leave the body.

HABIS 31 (2000)
Mª.A. The authoress begins with a survey of the Sleeplessness Theme in Homer and then studies its transmission along the Greek and Latin poetic tradition. Sleeplessness, when suffered by women in love, is a literary motif already present in Homer and specially developped by Hellenistic poets (Apollonius Rhodius, Theocritus) and by Latin poets of imperial times (Vergil, Ovid). The motiv of the poet's insomnia for sentimental reasons is found in the Greek Anthology and from that is inherited by the Latin elegiac poets. Typically in epic poetry (Homer, Vergil, Lucan) the hero remains awake the night before a great encounter or an important action.
