Sir Joshua Reynolds
No figure in England exerted greater influence on the art of his day than Sir Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds was brought up in an educated family, unusual for the artists of his day, and eventually became friends with some of the most notable figures of the second half of the century, including Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, and Garrick. His great learning and personal influence through the Academy probably had an impact disproportionate to the actual quality of his art. Reynolds was apprenticed to Hudson in 1740 in London, but in 1743 he left his master and returned to his native Devonshire. From 1743 to 1749 he worked on his own in Devonshire and London, and then left for Italy. Before his trip to classical ground, the main influences on Reynolds had been Hogarth and Ramsay, but his two year visit to Rome introduced him to the styles of Raphael and Michelangelo, from whom he learned something of the intellectual basis of Italian art. On his way home he spent two weeks in Venice, and this profoundly influenced his portrait style. In 1753 Reynolds set up in London, met Johnson, and quickly established his name. His only real rivals were Ramsay and Cotes (and later Gainsborough). When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, the only logical choice for President was Reynolds. He was knighted the following year and given an Honorary Doctorate at Oxford (an honor he shared only with Kneller among artists). Following 1768 Reynolds worked assiduously to use the Academy as an instrument to establish a British School of history painters that rivaled those of Italy. His fifteen Discourses composed and delivered at the Academy from 1769-90 admirably articulate the dominant aesthetic theory of his day.

z 250th Birth Anniversary of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was an important English artist of the 18th century and was
the first artist to be given the title Sir. At the age of 66, he experienced diminution of his left
eyesight. He recorded that "My left eye begins to put itself dark". This could well be the first
sign of uveal melanoma. In less than 2 months, he lost his vision completely. A year later, he
experienced a strong pains in the blind eye causing him to sink into deep depression. Few
months before he died, he had hepatomegaly and an increase in the size of the left eye that
extruded blood. His surgeon Mr. Cruikshank treated him with leeches and cupping. At
autopsy there was only mentioned of his liver that is said to be very diseased and enlarged.
The medical history suggests that he might have succumbed to metastatic uveal melanoma. Main page Next page Success in MRCOphth

An illuminating definition of the artist. Reynolds delivered his first Discourse on 2 January 1769, at the opening of the Royal Academy. In all he wrote and delivered fifteen Discourses between 1769 and 1790, each (apart from the first and the ninth) given on the occasion of the awarding of prizes to the Academy's students. The first seven were published together in 1787, and all fifteen in the collected edition of Reynolds' writings in 1797. In the weeks leading up to the presentation of each Discourse Reynolds made copious notes and rough drafts, working late into the night to give form to his thoughts. After organising and correcting these pages to his satisfaction, he would ask a pupil to provide a neat fair copy, from which he would deliver his lecture.

Joshua Reynolds, 1723-1792
The son of a clergyman, he was born near Plymouth in 1723. He was sent to London to study art in 1740. He was apprenticed to Thomas Hudson but William Hogarth and Allan Ramsay had the most influence of his style. After a period in Rome (1749-1752), Reynolds returned to England where he established himself as one of country's leading portrait painters. Those painted by Reynolds included Josiah Wedgwood, Warren Hastings, Sir Joseph Banks and David Garrick. When the Royal Academy was established in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first president. The following year he was knighted. In 1784 Reynolds was appointed as painter to George III. However, five years later his sight began to deteriorate and he was forced to give up painting.

The outcome is amid paintings and sculptures "out of season" dedicated to abstract expressions levity and photo advertising important pictures, objects and perfumes play and strangely enough to some elderly portraits ......so is there really a necessity for a subject? Viag giare Turismo e Alberghi Reynolds, Sir Joshua (The Frick Collection, New York) Born at Plympton, Devonshire, Reynolds served a brief apprenticeship under Thomas Hudson in London before launching his career as a portrait painter in Plymouth. Between 1749 and 1752 he was in Italy, where the study of ancient art and the Italian masters profoundly affected his style. Soon after his return he became the most fashionable portraitist in London. Reynolds was a prolific painter whose variety of approach was envied by his rival, Thomas Gainsborough. As the first President of the Royal Academy, Reynolds delivered a series of “Discourses” that were highly influential in shaping British aesthetic theory. He was a close friend of some of the leading personalities of his time, including Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, and Garrick.

Portrait of a cheerful, barefoot little girl standing on a stepping stone in the middle of a brook. "Sylvia" may be her name, or it may be an allegorical title personifying her as an inhabitant of the sylvan, or woodland, setting of the portrait. "Fancy pictures," which were a combination portrait and genre scene, became very popular at the end of the 18th century. One type consisted of middle-class patrons, dressed as peasants or farmers, in staged scenes of rural life. This appears to be in that genre.
Sir Joshua Reynolds was the foremost portrait painter in England in the 18th century, and was extremely influential on later generations of artists. His poses were intended to invoke classical values and to enhance the dignity of his sitters, as is evident in his treatment of this young rural girl. His style incorporated strong lighting, rich color and bravura paint handling. He also made history and "fancy pictures." As first president of the Royal Academy in London, he significantly raised the profile of art and artists in Britain. Reynolds is also known for his eloquent Discourses on Art, delivered to the students and members of the Academy between 1769 and 1790.
John Jones, the publisher, was a London-based engraver and printseller active from 1775. He was a mezzotint and stipple engraver mainly of portraits by Reynolds, Romney and others, who published most of his plates himself. He exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1780-91 and served as Engraver Extraordinary to the Prince of Wales from 1790-97.

Portrait of the printer and publisher William Strahan (1715-1785), who ran a highly important and successful business in the eighteenth century, at one time employing 50 men. Strahan was Samuel Johnson's chief publisher and also published the works of the philosopher David Hume. The original painting by Reynolds from which this print was made may be viewed online on the web site of the National Portrait Gallery in London where it is part of the permanent collection. Reynolds
Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), a central figure in the history of British art, both through his paintings and through the transformation he effected, by institutional and literary means, upon his calling. From the beginning of his career as a painter, his use of allusion to the Old Masters marked him out from his contemporaries. This was consolidated by two years' study in Rome (and a few weeks in Venice ) from 1750 to 1752. The following year he began to make a name for himself in London , blending elements of the Grand Style with fashionable portraiture, helping to establish the genre English historical art whilst becoming the leading painter of his day. When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was the natural choice for President. He used this position to promote a British school of painting, the intellectual basis of which is set out in the influential Reynolds's Discourses (fifteen talks delivered to the Royal Academy at various times between 1769 and 1790). Reynolds's Discourses became a benchmark for art criticism and art education in the early nineteenth century.

Reynolds, Sir Joshua
Reynolds, Sir Joshua (1723-1792) Historically the most important figure in
British painting, Reynolds was born in Devon, where his father was headmaster
of the Grammar School and a former Fellow of Balliol. This is worth mentioning
because it shows that Reynolds was born and brought up in an educated family at
a time when most English painters were hardly more than ill-educated tradesmen.
Reynolds himself did more to raise the status of the artist in England through
his learning and personal example than by his actual quality as an artist. The
fundamental basis of his art was the deliberate use of allusion to the Old
Masters. This appeal to the educated eye is the essence of his own style and
the reason for the rise in public esteem for the visual arts that is so marked a feature of his age. Reynolds's practice as a portrait painter was profoundly influenced by the few weeks he spent in Venice in 1752. He was knighted in 1769 and the works of the years following show him at his most Classical and most learned. In 1781 he made a journey to Flanders and Holland and was profoundly
