Bill O'Reilly: In our second “Back of the Book” segment today the continuing phenomenon that is “Star Trek” . Fox facts: there have been 7 Star Trek movies and 4 TV shows. “Star Trek” merchandise is an $800 million industry. And the first “Star Trek” program aired in 1966, the series continues in various forms to this day. With us now is the star of the UPN program “Star Trek: Voyager” Kate Mulgrew. Kate Mulgrew: You’re so much better informed than I am. Bill O’Reilly: I know, we have the facts, boy. KM: (laughing) how incredibly humbling. BO’R: Not that they mean anything. Hey, listen, you have the best deal on the show because you don’t have to dress up like a tree stump, or something. KM: And I thank god in all his glory for it every day of my life. BO’R: So you can be glamorous and all that. KM: I don’t think I could do it. You take Ethan Phillips who plays Neelix. How familiar are you ? You can be comfortable with me. BO’R: Now I’ve got to ask you that for a minute but they’re all dressed up in different costumes. We had Levar Burton on and he had the little iron thing.

The United States is holding more than 500 foreign detainees at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. These men have been deprived of basic legal and civil rights, and reports of abuse, torture and grotesque mistreatment are rampant. Many, if not most, of the detainees have been there nearly four years, yet in all that time, only four have been accused of any crime . And even then, military prosecutors recently charged the military trials against those four have been rigged The entire mess is playing into the hands of the terrorists, who now use Guantanamo Bay as a recruiting tool. So what would do to fix the problem? UPDATE: Crooks and Liars has the video Filed under: Guantanamo Bay Media Posted by Christy August 3, 2005 12:19 pm Permalink Comment

Recent columns The real star of Magnolia, John C. Reilly Akin Ojumu Sunday February 27, 2000 The Observer Everybody hurts in Magnolia. The new film from Boogie Nights director Paul Thomas Anderson is so full of melancholy, audiences would be well advised to bring Prozac not popcorn to the multiplexes. From the collective angst, John C. Reilly, not co-star Tom Cruise, emerges as the film's unconventional romantic hero. It's a double triumph of imaginative casting because Cruise plays a sleazy sex guru. The ambitious, sprawling movie follows the messy lives of a disparate, yet strangely connected group of LA residents over a weekend. Reilly is a compassionate cop, unable to gain the respect of his peers, who has an unusually attentive approach to his job. He is a New Man in a uniform. Cruise's flashy turn has been rewarded with an Oscar nomination, but Reilly is no less impressive in a more subtle role.

frankenlies.com Previous Next #14: Franken and Glick vs. O’Reilly: Resolved! (Hopefully) In a chapter attempting to discredit Bill O’Reilly, Franken cites an interview that O’Reilly conducted with a young man named Jeremy Glick. Glick sadly lost his father in New York City in the events on September 11. After signing his name to a full-page anti-war ad published in the New York Times , he appeared as a guest on the O’Reilly Factor on February 4, 2003. The interview became the subject of a lot of discussion for quite a while in the media because things became quite heated between Glick and O’Reilly. In his book, on page 78 (paperback, p. 82), Franken writes that Glick explained himself "modestly and eloquently." Apparently, presenting facts correctly takes a back seat as long as you sound good – and your views are different than Bill O’Reilly’s. The interview began when O’Reilly said that he was surprised that Glick signed his name to an ad which, according to O’Reilly, equates the United States with terrorists. Glick responded with a statement that ran nearly 45 seconds. Here is part of what he said: Glick : [Our] current president, who I feel and many feel is in this position illegitimately by neglecting the voices of Afro-Americans in the Florida coup ...

Why the Left is So Afraid of Bill O'Reilly
    by Rachel Alexander
    November 2002
O'Reilly's level of popularity on mainstream television frightens the Left, because until now, television viewers had generally been considered their territory. The Right had been relegated to talk radio, small newspapers, and magazines. Then the Internet emerged as a popular forum for news and opinion and along came Fox news. Fox not only rejected the dominant liberal approach of the other networks but told viewers that it was "fair and balanced" news - essentially allowing it to capture vast middle America in addition to the Right wing. The rise of Fox News paved the way for O'Reilly: as people discovered that the major networks - whom they had trusted over the years to be fair arbiters of the news - were all inherently biased, they realized they may as well listen to someone who did not try to mince words or present only one side of the story. O'Reilly's willingness to invite guests on his show whose opinions are diametrically opposed to his, while maintaining a reporter's news presence, is part of the key to his success. Unlike primetime evening news, he fairly includes radical opinions from both the Left and the Right, as well as minority views along the political spectrum. Unlike other political debate shows, he keeps the forum tightly wrapped so the show does not disintegrate into chaos making it difficult to follow or clearly hear any one person speaking. And like the primetime news shows, he covers most of the current and important political issues on each show.
