Not 2.0?
By tim on August 05, 2005
Tim Bray writes I just wanted to say how much I’ve come to dislike this “Web 2.0” faux-meme. It’s not only vacuous marketing hype, it can’t possibly be right. In terms of qualitative changes of everyone’s experience of the Web, the first happened when Google hit its stride and suddenly search was useful for, and used by, everyone every day. The second—syndication and blogging turning the Web from a library into an event stream—is in the middle of happening. So a lot of us are already on 3.0. Anyhow, I think Usenet might have been the real 1.0. But most times, the whole thing still feels like a shaky early beta to me. While being completely right in the details (we are quite arguably on 3.0 or even 8.0 if we're thinking about the internet compared to other software versioning), Tim is completely wrong about the big picture. Memes are almost always "marketing hype" bumper stickers is a better way to say it but they tend to catch on only if they capture some bit of the zeitgeist. The reason that the term "Web 2.0" has been bandied about so much since Dale Dougherty came up with it a year and a half ago in a conference planning session (leading to our Web 2.0 Conference

FOX NEWS is planning to air a redhot interview between Bill O'Reilly and boxoffice sensation Michael Moore on Tuesday.
The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained an embargoed transcript of the session:
Moore: That’s fair, we’ll just stick to the issues
O’Reilly: The issues… alright good, now, one of the issues is you because you’ve been calling Bush a liar on weapons of mass destruction, the senate intelligence committee, Lord Butler’s investigation in Britain, and now the 911 Commission have all come out and said there was no lying on the part of President Bush.  Plus, Gladimir Putin has said his intelligence told Bush there were weapons of mass destruction.  Wanna apologize to the president now or later?
M: He didn’t tell the truth, he said there were weapons of mass destruction.
O: Yeah, but he didn’t lie, he was misinformed by - all of those investigations come to the same conclusion, that’s not a lie.
M: uh huh, so in other words if I told you right now that nothing was going on down here on the stage…

Chapter 10
NTP
Time is inherently important to the function of routers and networks. It provides the only frame of reference between all devices on the network. This makes synchronized time extremely important. Without synchronized time, accurately correlating information between devices becomes difficult, if not impossible. When it comes to security, if you cannot successfully compare logs between each of your routers and all your network servers, you will find it very hard to develop a reliable picture of an incident. Finally, even if you are able to put the pieces together, unsynchronized times, especially between log files, may give an attacker with a good attorney enough wiggle room to escape prosecution.
NTP Overview
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) was first described in RFC 958 and has developed into the standard Internet time synchronization protocol. It is extremely efficient and needs no more than about one packet a minute to synchronize systems on a LAN to within 1 millisecond, and systems across WANs to within about 10 milliseconds. Without proper time synchronization between your routers, you may not only have trouble with correlating log files, but inaccurate time may also affect your ability to perform accounting, fault analysis, network management, and even time-based AAA authentication and authorization. So good time management is a necessary part of keeping your network healthy and secure.

Code Fragments only Editor's note: In part one in a two-part series of excerpts from Chapter 17 of WebLogic: The Definitive Guide , authors Avinash Chugh and Jon Mountjoy examine WebLogic's various security mechanisms, beginning with a look at the Java Security Manager and how WebLogic filters connection requests. They also cover WebLogic's authentication and authorization framework and how it supports the standard J2EE security services. WebLogic provides a comprehensive suite of security services that can be used to protect all aspects of a domain and its deployments. These security services affect all aspects of your domain: from the lowest level provided by the Java Security Manager, to connection-level security, to application-level security in which you can protect your administered and deployed objects (such as EJBs, web services, and JDBC pools), and finally to domain-level security in which you can establish trust between two domains. These security services target three distinct sets of users: application developers who can use the services to secure their applications; administrators who need to configure security for the system and deployments; and security vendors or customers who can change and extend the facilities provided by WebLogic.

B ill O’Reilly doesn’t like me. Not at all. I’m an elitist secular socialist educated to hate America—for I am every Canadian in Bill O’Reilly’s world. Therefore, what I am about to write is of no consequence. In O’Reilly’s world, criticism of America’s top-rated cable news personality is the work of Canadians and/or anti-American leftists, and isn’t worth responding to. That is, until an opportunity arises in which he can open his mouth or flex his writing muscles—an opportunity that comes often, whether on his TV show, his radio show, his books, his website or his columns. A response blasts from O’Reilly when his credibility or reputation is challenged, as it so often is—whether by your average run-of-the-mill liberal here or an Al Franken there. A thuggish, childish attack on any individual or organization mentioning his name negatively is not unexpected. The New York Times , Al Franken, and Media Matters are all frequent victims of O’Reilly’s frequent outbursts. Just take his

O'REILLY: (Sa)-tired of this yet?
By Rob O'Reilly Published: Thursday, March 31, 2005 Recently, I've been receiving a lot of criticism, but I can't understand why. I'm just a normal, average, typical Boston University student. How can you not love me when I'm just like you? I put my acid-stained designer jeans on one leg at a time.
The first reason I'm such a standard student is that I love my iPod. It's great for avoiding social interactions on Commonwealth Avenue!
Just like so many other students, I too get upset about the hiked tuition, but deep down I understand it. How else would BU pay to keep the communal bathrooms in such top-notch condition?
As an exemplary BU student, I even pretend like I'm best of friends with the workers in the dining hall. I always smile and talk to them about meaningful things like the weather.
I couldn't call myself a representative BU student if I wasn't a huge Red Sox fan! After the big win, I celebrated by flipping a car.

Multiple ResultSets in ADO.NET
by Srinivasa Sivakumar
Introduction
Most Web Forms applications need to load multiple pieces of data, usually to load up comboboxes or listboxes. Many times we end up querying the database again and again for different lookup table data, and this reduces scalability and adds more stress to the backend database. With my current ASP.NET application, I faced this challenge. I had to fill about three comboboxes from a SQL Server 2000 database. Initially, I created SqlConnection and SqlCommand objects and I reused them with different SqlDataReader objects to fill the dropdown boxes. But it was a tedious task, since I had to re-execute different queries against the same data source again and again to get the lookup data. Then I figured out that I could get all the results from multiple queries in a single roundtrip to the database. By using batch queries and multiple ResultSets in ADO.NET, I could increase the scalability of my application and improve my user's experience by simply being faster.

The Dead Zone
Krugman is squashed in a debate with O’Reilly.
T
I’m happy to report it was the former. Bill O’Reilly didn’t just win the debate. He cut out Paul Krugman’s heart and stomped on it. Welcome, Bill O’Reilly, to the Krugman Truth Squad. (You can read a full transcript of the show here This marks the first time that anyone has really stood up to America’s most dangerous liberal pundit on television. And Krugman simply didn’t know how to handle it. At several points in the show Krugman was practically in shock, with hands visibly trembling. O’Reilly was masterful. He didn’t for one moment grant Krugman the undeserved respect that everyone else grants him, thanks to the prestigious aura of his Princeton professorship and his New York Times column. And O’Reilly didn’t let Krugman get away with any of his usual stunts. O’Reilly uncompromisingly held Krugman to account for some of the outrageous (and outrageously wrong) things Krugman’s written in his Times columns. In one case, when Krugman denied what O’Reilly accused him of having said, O’Reilly jabbed his index finger toward Krugman’s face and shouted, “Don’t call me a liar, pal. That’s what you do all the time, and I’m not going to sit here and take it.”
