An Interview with the Creator of Ruby
by Bruce Stewart Ruby has been described as an absolutely pure object-oriented scripting language and a genuine attempt to combine the best of everything in the scripting world. Ruby is written in C, and it was designed with Perl and Python capabilities in mind. While its roots are in Japan, Ruby is slowly but surely gaining ground in the U.S. Yukihiro Matsumoto (or "Matz" as he's known online) is the creator of Ruby and the author of O'Reilly's recently released book on the language, Ruby in a Nutshell Matz is a professional programmer who has worked for the Japanese open source company, netlab.jp. Matz is also known as one of the high-profile open source evangelists in Japan. He's released several open source products, including cmail, an emacs-based, mail-user agent, written entirely in emacs lisp. Ruby is his first piece of software that has become known outside of Japan. We recently spoke to Matz about Ruby's history, the influence Perl and Python had on Ruby, and why the world needs another scripting language.

Headline: U.S. Murder Rate Rose in 2002; Violent Crimes Fall This is good news, right? Or is it just that, as a nation, our aim is improving? Conservative Republicans have to make up their minds this week. Is it possible to maintain both of the following positions at the same time? 1) The removal of the Ten Commandments monument from the Montgomery courthouse is a tragedy that will hasten the moral decay of this great nation. 186. T R U T H O U T - Bill Moyers Responds To Bill O'Reilly
Moyers refutes assertions that O'Reilly made about him in a broadcast.

Moyers on O'Reilly
By
Bill Moyers Wednesday, 4 December, 2002 In a recent column and broadcast Bill O'Reilly makes a number of assertions about me, in matters large and small, that are both undocumented and false. It's time to set the record straight. First, on a rather trivial level, Mr. O'Reilly asserted that I refused to come to the phone when he called. He's not telling the truth. One of his staff called my assistant to ask if I would appear on Mr. O'Reilly's show, but I declined. I would never refuse a call from Mr. O'Reilly, although my ears are not quite tuned to his decibel level. Mr. O'Reilly says I called him a warmonger. He is not telling the truth. Here's what happened: In the aftermath of 9/11 Mr. O'Reilly, from his battle station at Fox, was calling for the United States "to bomb the Afghan infrastructure to rubble, the airport, the power plants, the water facilities, the roads." He went on to describe Afghanistan as "a very primitive country" and to say "taking out their ability to exist day-to-day will not be hard. Remember the people of any country are ultimately responsible for the government they have. The Germans were responsible for Hitler, the Afghans are responsible for the Taliban. We should not target civilians but if they don't rise up against this criminal government, they starve, period." Mr. O'Reilly went on to inform the readers of his column that I own the videos to my programs which are funded by public television and that "[Moyers] sells the videocassettes, keeping the proceeds." Once again he is not telling the truth. Public television rarely funds my work - I raise the money myself, from independent sources-but when it does, as with the case of my weekly series NOW with Bill Moyers (Friday nights at 9 p.m. on Channel 13), PBS owns the distribution rights, the proceeds remain with public television, and my share is miniscule.

An Introduction to Ruby
by Colin Steele Ruby is an object-oriented scripting language that combines the object-oriented programming (OOP) power of Smalltalk with the utility of Perl and the power of Python. I can already hear you grumbling, "Oh, great, another language." Why should you care? You're already up to your elbows in technologies to learn, right? Well, call your significant other and tell him or her you're going to be late tonight. And go get another Jolt. You're going to be hooked on Ruby for the simple reason that Ruby makes programming fun again (and that's what really counts). This article introduces Ruby by examining the high-level properties of the language as well as some important features that distinguish it from other languages. We'll compare Ruby with Perl and Python. Along the way, I'll provide my personal take on Ruby, and why I think you'll love it as much as I do.

189. THE ROMANCE READER Reviews: Lady Of Skye By Patricia Cabot

An Improper Proposal Portrait of My Heart Where Roses Grow Wild Lady of Skye by Patricia Cabot (Pocket Sonnet, $6.50, PG-13) ISBN 0-7434-1027-0 Dr. Reilly Stanton, eighth Marquis of Stillworth, is suffering from a case of badly wounded pride. Miss Christine King, lovely London miss, has broken their engagement, claiming he’s not heroic enough for her tastes. In order to prove her wrong, Reilly has come to the wilds of Skye. He hopes that he’ll be able to win his ladylove’s admiration by saving a few of the Hebridean savages. Now, before you click off to another review on this website, let me assure you that this rather twittish-sounding premise is delivered in a tongue-in-cheek style with more than a touch of slapstick. Reilly arrives on Skye in the company of several sailors and their dead companion, whom Reilly has pulled from the icy sea. The body is borne to a local tavern, whereupon a tall woman named Brenna arrives and brings the man back to life with a well-placed thump between the shoulder blades. Damn. Reilly’s first shot at heroism and he’s already blown it. Brenna Donnegal is the island’s “doctor”, a healer with more to her background than she lets on. The local earl, Glendenning, is pestering Brenna to marry him and in order to force her hand, he’s sent for Reilly to be the new doctor. Then, Glendenning reasons, Reilly will have to take over Brenna’s cottage and Brenna will be left with no choice but to move in with Glendenning.

Bill O'Reilly (commentator)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Bill O'Reilly William James "Bill" O'Reilly, Jr. (born September 10 ) is the host of a popular American cable television opinion program, The O'Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel . O'Reilly also hosts a radio program syndicated by Westwood One called The Radio Factor and has authored five best-selling books, one of which is a novel . Recently, he has voiced concern about what he sees as the harmful influence of gangsta rap on children, the high level of mismanagement of charity funds for September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks victims, and what he perceives as liberal bias of The New York Times and many other media outlets. O'Reilly himself is often in turn accused of conservative bias . O'Reilly admits that he takes opinions on issues, although he says that he analyzes the issues fairly. He points out that while publications such as the Times aim to report news, he is a news analyst, which allows him to form opinions on issues.
