John Reed
American revolutionary, socialist and journalist. Reed was born in Portland, Oregon, to a wealthy family and educated at Harvard University. He settled in New York City in 1910 and began writing for a socialist journal, The Masses . In New York, Reed gained a reputation as one of the new and bright intellectuals of the Greenwich Village portion of New York. After going to New Jersey to witness a silk-workers' strike organized by Bill Haywood in 1913, he also became a supporter of the Industrial Workers of the World and their idea of "One Big Union." Subsequently, he organized an IWW march in New York. Officially becoming a journalist, Reed gained national attention for his reporting of the revolt led by Pancho Villa of Mexico in 1914. When World War I broke out, Reed denounced it as a "Traders' War." He was sent to Europe in 1914 and 1915 for The Metropolitan . After returning from Europe, he with numerous leftists such as Emma Goldman and Max Eastman to fight against the war. He initially supported President Woodrow Wilson because he pledged to keep the US from fighting. When Wilson broke his promise and sent troops to Europe, Reed joined the

Oregon Click here to add an author to this state! Click an author to read a biographical essay prepared by a local student. Oregon: Diverse Climates, Diverse Thinkers
By Becky Mills When someone mentions the state of Oregon, most people think of two things: trees, and pioneers in covered wagons. In truth, we do have an abundance of trees and historical markers commemorating the pioneers who seized their Manifest Destiny. Oregon and its authors are as varied as the land itself. Where else can one visit the Pacific Ocean, lush rain forest, fertile river valley farmland, snow-covered mountains, and high desert, all in the same day? Not only do we hunt and fish and farm here, we are also home to some progressive companies: Nike, Tektronix and Stash Teas. Where else do they legislate the returning of cans and bottles, make it illegal to own the beach, leave lumber families and businesses broke because of a little spotted owl, or have no sales tax? Less Material Dreams Perhaps because Oregon's early days were not dominated by gold rushes, as were California and Alaska, those who penned the early literature of our state were chasing less material dreams. The pioneers who made Oregon home sought a living from the land and felt a genuine affection for it rather than a desire to conquer it. The settlers were strong, visionary, principled, pragmatic people who didn't have time for extensive cultural pursuits. Oregon, while not a cultural Mecca, had a great share of independent thinkers and fascinating characters.

INTRODUCTION
[by John Reed, 1919] WHEN Litvinov was torn loose from his "far from gay or complicated" life, caught up in a lurid passion in which he was never at home, and then abandoned, he fled upon the train. At first he was exhausted by the prodigious effort of will he had made; then a kind of composure came upon him. He "was hardened." The train, the minutes, were carrying him away from the wreck of his life. Smoke succession; and suddenly everything appeared to him to be smokeeverything, his own life, everything pertaining to men, especially everything Russian. Every thing is smoke and steam, he thought;everything seems to be constantly undergoing change; every where there are new forms, phenomenon follows phenomenon, but in reality everything is exactly alike; everything is hurrying, hastening somewhitherand everything vanishes without leaving a trace, without having attained to any end whatever; another breeze has begun to blowand everything has been flung to the other side, and there, again, is the same incessant, agitatedand useless game. He recalled many things which had taken place, with much sound and clatter, before his eyes the last few years . . 'smoke,' he murmured,'smoke.'"

Beard, Charles A. (1876-1958): § Beard had been on the faculty of Columbia University. In his earlier works his liberalism shone forth (he figured that, as property owners, the framers of the American Constitution were chiefly interested in constructing a charter to protect their wealth). He was a strong advocate of the idea that the study of history should include consideration of all cultural forces. He wrote several books with his wife, a historian of both the feministic and the labour movements. Beard's early liberalism faded toward the end of his life, when he began advocating more conservative ideas; he became an isolationist in foreign policy, and an outspoken critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

    http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.
