Arthur Ransome was born on January 18, 1884, in Leeds, where his father was a Professor of History. His father was a lover of the hills and lakes of Furness, and carried the baby Arthur up to the top of Coniston Old Man (later to become 'Kanchenjunga' in the books) when he was only a few weeks old. Every summer, he took his family by train to Greenodd, complete with their belongings packed into a large tin bath, and then by cart along the valley to Lowick and, finally, to Nibthwaite, on the shores of Coniston Water.
The unnamed lake of Arthur Ransome's books is an amalgamation of Coniston and its sister Windermere, but it is on Coniston, close to Nibthwaite, that you will find the promontory where the Swallows planned their first expedition, and Wildcat Island, exactly as drawn in the books. Many of the incidents in the stories are drawn from Ransome's own childhood memories and fantasies - the Knickerbockerbreaker, where his trousers were worn out and darned in situ by Annie Swainson, the tickling of trout, the collecting of fox-moth caterpillars and meetings with the charcoal-burners.
It was to be a long time before the memories came to life in Swallows and Amazons and the rest of the books about the children who sailed and explored the lakes and mountains of England. Always fired by ambition to be a writer, Arthur Ransome took his first job with a London publisher and then with the famous newspaper, the Manchester Guardian, for whom he worked for many years as a foreign correspondent.

Arthur Ransome
Arthur Mitchell Ransome, the British author, was born in Leeds as the oldest son of a professor of history at Leeds University (wihich was earlier known as Yorkshire College). His father was a fanatic fisher and used to take the whole family each summer to the Lake District. Arthur loved it there, sailed on the boat across the lake...anyway, he soon found out he was a disappointment to his father because he was not a good fisher (the skill he gained much later). In fact, he was never close to his father (his father was not particularly glad about Arthur's writer's attempts; strange enough, for he himself wrote a large number of books). Arthur was sent to a school at Windermere but was not happy there. Later he attended the public school in Rugby but the situation was the same - he liked the outdoor activities but was not good at sport and was therefore bullied by others. he went to Leeds University to study chemistry but it was soon clear he wouldn't be able to pass the exams. Fianlly he left school and at the age of 17 he started working as an office boy. He worked hard and found a better job. In his free time he was trying to "write something" and was soon paid for publishing stories and articles in various newspaper and magazines. At the age of 20 he decided to give up his job and build a career as a freelance writer. He became a friend with Edith Nesbit and other writers...in 1904 his first collections of essays was published. He wrote a critical essay about E. A. Poe (1910) and came with a few children's books (

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies ARTHUR RANSOME (1884 - 1967) The famous author of Swallows and Amazons had an adventurous youth. He went to Russia to learn the language, and escape his first wife, in 1913. He sailed back to Britain after the outbreak of war in August 1914, but returned to Russia on 30 December and thereafter covered the war in the East as a journalist. He was back in England for a short visit in November 1916 and again in October 1917, missing the Bolshevik insurrection by four weeks. All of these trips were no doubt via Scandinavia and the Bergen ferry to and from Newcastle. The Baltic was a German lake, but before 1917, the Germans allowed North Sea ferry traffic so long as the ships carried no cargo. After the Kaiser declared unrestricted naval warfare in 1917, the ferries were liable to be sunk. In December 1917, because of a rail strike, Ransome had to go by ship from the Thames to Newcastle to catch the Bergen ferry. The Norwegian skipper was disinclined to take him, or indeed anybody, since his coal was strike-bound. Eventually he agreed to use his coal-dust ballast as fuel and the company arrived in Bergen as black as the ace of spades. On this occasion, Ransome was entrusted with a diplomatic bag for Stockholm. He carried on to Russia, and returned via Newcastle again in March 1919. Significantly, he was met in London at King’s Cross, the terminus for the Newcastle train. Ransome was back in Russia in 1919 and reported on the civil war and the allied intervention. He wore a Russian military uniform with the letters BK (war correspondent) on his cap. His position has often been a subject for discussion - was he an allied agent? Was he actually a communist? He established friendly relations with Trotsky, Lenin, Bukharin and Radek, and shared a house with the latter. His reports were objective and tried to give a sympathetic picture of what the Bolsheviks were attempting to do. This earned him considerable mistrust at home, and he was in some d anger of being charged with treason. He left Russia in 1924, married Trotsky’s secretary and eventually settled in the Lake District.

Biographical Sketch
Leonard Russell, editor and literary anthologist, was born in London in 1906. He began his career in journalism at the DAILY TELEGRAPH registering the editor's incoming review copies. Cyril Lakin later made Russell an assistant when Lakin was appointed literary editor of the DAILY TELEGRAPH in 1929, and of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1933. When Russell succeeded Lakin literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1945, he contracted talents such as Cyril Connolly, Harold Hobson, Raymond Mortimer, and Hugh Trevor-Roper, who helped make the SUNDAY TIMES a leading voice in the literary community. He remained literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES until 1954. In addition to these accomplishments, Russell founded THE SATURDAY REVIEW in 1941, worked briefly on GO magazine after leaving the SUNDAY TIMES, and later returned to the newspaper, where he edited a succession of serials that changed the character of Sunday journalism and increased the SUNDAY TIMES' circulation dramatically. Notable serializations under Russell's direction include Lord Montgomery's memoirs, Somerset Maugham's TEN NOVELS AND THEIR AUTHORS, and William Manchester's DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. In his later years Russell was involved in several publishing projects, including THE PEARL OF DAYS, an unofficial history of the SUNDAY TIMES.

Biographical Sketch
Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.
