THE CHURCH OF SAINT PAUL, RUSLAND St Paul's Church looks out over the peaceful meadows and fells of the Rusland Valley, between Windermere and Coniston Water. Like its neighbour Colton Church, it stands on a low hill with magnificent views. The Church was built in 1745, and in 1868 it was restored and largely rebuilt.
In a quiet corner of Rusland Church is the burial place for Arthur Ransome (1884-1967), and his wife Evgenia (1894-1975). Arthur was the author of many children’s books including the world famous Swallows and Amazons. He came upon the Church in the late 1950's whilst exploring Rusland Pool during a fishing holiday. He found the churchyard one of the most peaceful places on Earth, and asked if he could be buried there under a particular tree, with the sound of the wind in the pine needles.
Also buried here are Mary, the wife of George Romney, the famous 18th Century lakeland artist, and the Reverand John Romney, his son. George Romney, himself, is buried at St Mary's Church, Dalton-in-Furness.
The East window, by John Hardman, has three lights depicting scenes from the Biblical text. On either side are painted boards bearing The Ten Commandments, The Lord's Prayer and The Creed.

1.Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) (1832-1898
Lewis Carroll, as he is better known, was born in Daresbury, near Warrington, Lancashire, and was educated at a private school in Richmond, Yorkshire, before going on to Rugby School in 1846 and Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851. And there he remained, as a Fellow of the College. His first book for children, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , appeared in 1865. It was devised to amuse the daughter of the dean of his college. It portrays Alice as a no-nonsense, confident little girl, possessed of considerable common sense, caught up in entirely fantastic - today we might say surreal - adventures. Its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass , was published in 1871 . Find out more about Lewis Carroll Find out more about Alice in Wonderland
2.Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
was born in Manchester, England, in 1849 but moved with her widowed mother to Tennessee, USA, in 1865. She wrote for adults as well as children. Her best known children's books are Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) and The Secret Garden The eponymous hero of Little Lord Fauntleroy is portrayed as open, loyal, trusting and courageous. He has a keen sense of fair play and is alert to the needs of the disadvantaged. In the book he unwittingly converts his self-centred and miserly grandfather - an Earl - into a compassionate landlord.

Ransome (1884-1967), the author of Swallows and Amazons, came to MI5’s attention in 1917 when, as a journalist for the Daily News in Russia, he witnessed the October Revolution at first hand and was on friendly terms with many prominent Bolshevik figures. These two reconstituted files document MI5’s intense interest in Ransome in the years 1917-1920, as he produced propaganda for the Bolsheviks, travelled between Moscow, Stockholm and the UK, and aroused a great debate as to whether he was a genuine Bolshevik, or was feigning an interest to enable him to continue his journalistic work, or to gather information for the British authorities. The files contain some details of his relationship with Evgenia Shelepin, Trotsky’s former secretary, who Ransome married in 1924 having played a large part in arranging her emigration from Russia. KV 2/1903 There is further correspondence, but tracing Ransome’s movements and career at a lower level of detail, in KV 2/1904 (covering 1918-1937). The debate as to his true political sympathies continues, and there are reports about his visit to Ceylon and China later in the 1920s. The file closes with a copy of Ransome’s passport renewal form in 1937 (which includes a relatively poor copy photograph of Ransome), at which time it was agreed that his name could be removed from the blacklist.

Activities Thomas Arnold (1795-1842) Arnold's writings fall into three main groups: diaries, letters, and sermons - the latter being notable for their capacity to get through to pupils; articles, often controversial, on educational and theological issues, and his contributions to classical knowledge, particularly his massive commentary on Thucydides's History of the Peloponnesian War (1830-35) , and A History of Rome (1838-42) . He found writing history a relief from the mundane pressures of School business, and was praised by others for his ability to draw out its contemporary relevance. See also this page on Dr Arnold Matthew Arnold (1822-88) He is equally famous for his verse and prose. Among his best-known poems are Dover Beach The Scholar Gypsy and Sohrab and Rustum (1853), and Rugby Chapel (1857), the lament on the death of Dr Arnold. His two chief prose works are Essays in Criticism Culture and Anarchy Matthew Arnold spent more than thirty-five years of his working life as an Inspector of Schools. He died of heart failure (an hereditary weakness) while running for a tram in Liverpool. Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) Clough was Dr Arnold's prize pupil, and because his parents had emigrated to America, he spent many of his holidays with the Head Master's family, a situation perhaps less than ideal. At Oxford he failed to live up to academic expectations and his career was marred by religious doubts. In 1854 he married a cousin of Florence Nightingale, and on her return from the Crimea became her helper and personal secretary. In reality this imposing woman made Clough her dogsbody, and in 1860 his health broke under the strain. He died of a stroke in Florence a year later, and Matthew Arnold's
