ARTHUR RANSOME COLLECTION
The Arthur Ransome Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, and printed matter related to the life and writings of Arthur Ransome (1884-1967), the English journalist, critic, and renowned children's author best known for his series of books, "Swallows and Amazons." The collection comprises 2 boxes, 52 folders, and 0.5 linear feet of materials and is divided into five series. Nineteen letters, most handwritten or typed by Ransome, are retained in the collection, including correspondence from Ransome to several publishers, including Rupert-Hart Davis, H. W. Wilson, and John G. Wilson. Five letters from Ransome to Helena Hirst are also present. One of Ransome's letters written from Petersburg in 1914, detailing the situation in Russia as it entered World War I, highlights the correspondence file. The collection contains three valuable manuscripts written by Ransome: a typed and edited printer's proof of his book "'Racundra's' First Cruise," a typed, heavily edited, and signed manuscript of his story "The Soldier and Death," and two autograph notebooks titled "Thirteen Caucasian Folk Tales." Many essays by and about Ransome, mostly in the form of xerox copies, are also in this collection. A handful of articles by Ransome, including a series of dispatches Ransome wrote for "The China Weekly Review" and an essay about his reasons for writing the book "Swallows and Amazons," are preserved. Numerous essays about Ransome provide reviews of his works and significant biographical and bibliographical information.

Reviews of The Autobiography of Arthur Ransome
Guardian, 9th September, 1976 (William Golding)
Father to the Man
Arthur Ransome always wanted to be a writer, and his parents inflicted on him the misery which is said to be the prerequisite for that profession. His father, who died while his son was still a young boy, nevertheless had time to treat him with the inadvertent cruelty which is so often the left hand of the theoretical educationist. His mother seems to have been a very conventional woman who was not much interested in him. No one knew he was so short-sighted as to be nearly blind. Even so, the boy Ransome had one great stroke of luck. He visited Lake Coniston and found by those shores a whole surrogate family of parents and cousins. From that time onward, whether he realised it or not, and whether he disguised it as the Baltic or the Saltings of the Ocean, Lake Coniston lay in him like a jewel, a talisman, a secret recipe for happiness. What a quaint and even farcical picture it is, this tough man stumping through life, fat, bespectacled, energetic, writing what came to hand but hoping one day to emulate Hans Andersen in that most difficult and aery genre! His best attempt, Old Peter's Russian Tales, had considerable success, but nothing to what came later. For Ransome was very much a solid scene man, devoid of conscious skill with allegory or unconscious luck with levels . What he was to achieve in the end was to be wholly down-to-earth.

Partial list of works Russia in 1919 The Truth About Russia Swallows and Amazons Swallowdale (Swallows and Amazons series) ... The Crisis in Russia Arthur Ransome (January 18, 1884–June 3, 1967) is best known for writing the Swallows and Amazons series of children's books, which tell of school-holiday adventures of teen-age children, mostly in the Lake District and Norfolk Broads areas of England, and mostly involving small sailing boats. They remain popular to the point that they are a basis of a tourist industry around Lake Windermere and Coniston Water - the two lakes that Ransome used as the basis for his fictional lake. Earlier in his life, Ransom was a newspaper reporter, writing mainly for the famous Manchester Guardian (now the Guardian). He wrote about 30 nonfiction books on topics ranging from Oscar Wilde to Russia before gaining success with the Swallows and Amazons series. In 1913 he visited Russia to study folk lore. In 1916, he published

The Benign Moment Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) Arthur Ransome, the son of Cyril Ransome and Edith Boulton, was born in Leeds on 18th January, 1884. Educated at Rugby, Ransome was a reluctant student. He studied science at Yorkshire College (later to become Leeds University) but left before taking his degree. Ransome moved to London where he scraped a living writing stories and articles for various literary journals. In the summer of 1913 he was commissioned to write an English guide on St. Petersburg. While in Russia he began work on Old Peter's Russian Tales. With the outbreak of the First World War, Ransome was recruited by the Daily News to report on the Eastern Front. Later he was also employed by J. L. Garvin, to write for the Observer. During this period he worked closely with Hamilton Fyfe, a journalist employed by the Daily Mail. After the Russian Revolution, Ransome remained in the country and became friendly with Vladimir Lenin and other Bolshevik leaders. His reports provided a sympathetic view of the revolution and when he arrived back in England in 1919 he was arrested by the police. After being interviewed by Sir Basil Thomson, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Ransome was released after he convinced the authorities that he was not a communist revolutionary. While in England he wrote Six Weeks in Russia (1919), an account of the revolution. Upset by what he had written, the Foreign Office refused him permission to leave the country.
