A week before her 21st birthday, Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum left the Soviet Union, never to return. Officially, she had come only to visit family in Chicago but Rosenbaum had other plans. As a girl, she had watched the Bolshevik revolution reduce her middle-class family to poverty, and was convinced that communism would destroy Russia as well. After staying several months with her relatives, practicing her English, she headed to Hollywood to begin a new life under a new name: Ayn Rand. By a stroke of luck, Ayn (it rhymes with "mine") encountered legendary director Cecil B. DeMille on her second day in town. He gave her work as an extra in his film

Believing government has a legitimate but relatively minimal role in a free society, she was not an anarchist , but a minarchist . Her novels were based upon the archetype of the Randian hero , a man whose ability and independence causes conflict with the masses, but who perseveres nevertheless to achieve his values. Rand viewed this hero as the ideal and made it the express goal of her literature to showcase such heroes. She believed:

Updated: July 24, 2005 10:45 PM ET " To know one's own desires, their meaning and their costs requires the highest human virtue: rationality ." - Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982) What is Objectivism? Objectivism is a philosophy created by Ayn Rand. In Ayn Rand's own words, "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."
The two main themes of the philosophy of Objectivism is the belief in individualism over collectivism, and selfishness over altruism.
Below is an outline of the philosophy:
Reality exists independent of man's consciousness. It is an objective absolute.
A is A (facts are facts - "man's consciousness is to pervceive reality, not to create or invent it." [1]
Through reason man can know the facts of reality.
There is a focus on free-will.

    Ayn Rand (Alissa Rosenbaum)
(1905 - 1982) writer and philosopher Born in Russia, she studied at the University of Petrograd graduating in 1924. She immigrated to the United States two years later and became a screenwriter in Hollywood. During the late 1930s, she began developing her philosophy of objectivism, a worldview proclaiming support for each individual's talent and effort that according to her opinion finds his or her best expression solely within a pure capitalist framework. Rand argued in favor of her viewpoint in a number of novels, among them "The Fountainhead", published in 1943, and "Atlas Shrugged" released in 1957. She further elaborated her views in a number of non-fiction works as well as in two journals under her editorship: "The Objectivist" (1962-1971) and "The Ayn Rand Letter" (1971-1976).

    Ayn Rand
By Catherine Daligga The eldest of three sisters, Ayn Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Fronz and Anna Rosenbaum. Her father, a pharmacist, had his own shop, a rare position for Jews in Russia. A precocious child, Alyssa declared herself an atheist in her early teens, and while she never denied her Jewish heritage, she also never softened her opposition to religion or any other form of "mysticism." The privations she and her family endured as a result of the Russian Revolution, Including the Bolsheviks taking possession of her father's business, affected her deeply. Somehow she managed to survive the purges of bourgeois students long enough to obtain a degree in history from the University of Leningrad in 1924. At the university, she took a few classes in American political history and found the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence fascinating. Despite the progressively isolationist policy of the Soviets, some Western exports still found their way to Russia in the 1920s. For Alyssa, the most important were American movies. Conditions in the United States-at least as depicted on the screen-impressed her as strongly as conditions at home repelled her, so when distant cousins provided the miraculous opportunity to travel to the United States, she did not hesitate. She turned twenty-one in Berlin, on her way to America. At immigration, she announced that her first name was Ayn (pronounced to rhyme with "pine"). Shortly after, she chose the second part of her beloved typewriter's brand name for her surname.

Quotes of the Day for 2 February 2004 - Ayn Rand
America's abundance was not created by public sacrifices to the common good, but by the productive genius of free men who pursued their own personal interests and the making of their own private fortunes. Civilization is the progress of a society towards privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. Love and friendship are profoundly personal, selfish values ... an expression and assertion of self-esteem, a response to one's own values in the person of another. One's own independent judgment is the means by which one must choose one's actions, but it is not a moral criterion nor a moral validation; only reference to a demonstrable principle can validate one's choices. The idea that 'the public interest' supersedes private interests and rights can have but one meaning: that the interests and rights of some individuals take precedence over the interests and rights of others. Great men can't be ruled.
