Atomic Age
It is not in the nature of mannor of any living entityto start out by giving up, by spitting in one's own face and damning
existence; that requires a process of corruption whose rapidity differs from man to man. Some give up at the first touch of
pressure; some sell out; some run down by imperceptible degrees and lose their fire, never knowing when or how they lost it.
Then all of these vanish in the vast swamp of their elders who tell them persistently that maturity consists of abandoning one's
mind; security, of abandoning one's values; practicality, of losing self-esteem. Yet a few hold on and move on, knowing that that
fire is not to be betrayed, learning how to give it shape, purpose and reality. But whatever their future, at the dawn of their lives,
men seek a noble vision of man's nature and of life's potential. Excerpt from Introduction of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand (1905-1982), a best selling novelist and world-renowned philosopher, deductively developed a unique philosophical system called Objectivism which has affected many lives over the last half century. This article represents an introduction to her systematic vision by presenting her essential ideas in a logical, accessible manner. This should contribute toward the appreciation of Rand's profoundly original philosophical system.
The specific purpose of this article is to introduce, logically rearrange, and clarify through rewording the ideas scattered throughout her essays, lectures, and novels, especially Atlas Shrugged (1957), her masterwork of logic that most completely expounds her exhaustive, fully-integrated, philosophy. Written from the viewpoint of a generalist in economics, philosophy, and the social sciences, I mean to provide a background for readers who wish to study specialized aspects of Rand's philosophy in greater detail.
The Essence of Objectivism
Capitalism, the resulting economic system, is based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned.

Ayn Rand - Libertarian Find out YOUR R ussian-born Ayn Rand (1905-1982) brought more people into the libertarian movement than anybody else. She did this by making a moral case for individualism and liberty through her dramatic novels. Her first was We The Living (1936), chronicling love and the struggle for liberty amidst Soviet oppression. Then came her first big success, The Fountainhead (1943), about a determined individualist pursuing his vision in a collectivist world. The Fountainhead became a bestseller and was made into a movie starring Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal and Raymond Massey. Anthem (1946) is a bold affirmation of individualism. A short novel, it affords an easy introduction to Rand's ideas. The book goes far beyond more famous anti-authoritarian novels such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon (1941) or George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945) or (1949). Rand's most philosophical novel is

Ayn Rand (1905-1982)
Human consciousness has three aspects, sensations, perceptions, and conceptions. The first two are shared with animals. The last (conceptions) is what makes someone a person.Regardless of whether or not the person works to develop all three aspects, they must be integrated to some degree in order to give the person a frame of reference for his/her own existence.. The developmental stage of conception is when one possesses the ability “to integrate peceptions into conceptions by a process of abstraction which is performed by choice.” (P. 197.) This is also called the ability to reason, to think. “It is not automatic nor instinctive nor involuntary nor infallible. Man has to initiate it, to sustain it and to bear responsibility for it.” (Ibid.) "Man is the only living being who has to perceive reality - which means: to be conscious - by choice." For man, knoweldge and unsterstanding are the means for survival. While animals survive by adjusting to the environment or "background," Rand believed that humans survive by changing the environment to suite his.her needs or desires. The world is made of four archetypes of human beings, Attila, the Witch Doctor, Ballast, and the Producer.

Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand is the author of the classic American novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and the originator of a comprehensive philosophical system called "Objectivism" that emphasizes the primacy of human reason, the moral importance of individualism and the necessity of political freedom.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia and educated in Soviet universities, Rand emigrated to the United States in her early twenties and settled in Hollywood where she worked in the film industry as an extra and a screenwriter. Rand went on to success as a novelist, beginning with We the Living and Anthem and followed by the best-selling The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . The later novels won Rand a coterie of devoted followers who were attracted to her stirring arguments for the morality of individualism and laissez faire capitalism.
