(1905-1982), writer, lecturer, and editor Ayn Rand was born on February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia. She graduated from the University of Petrograd in 1924 and two years later emigrated to the United States. She initially worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1931. Her first novel, We, the Living, was published in 1936. The Fountainhead (1943), her first best-selling novel, depicts a highly romanticized architect-hero, a superior individual whose egoism and genius prevail over timid traditionalism and social conformism. The allegorical Atlas Shrugged (1957), another best-seller, combines science fiction and political message in telling of an anticollectivist strike called by the management of U.S. big industry, a company of attractive, self-made men. The political philosophy that shaped Rand's fictional worka deeply conservative philosophy that posited individual effort and ability as the sole source of all genuine achievement, that thereby elevated the pursuit of self-interest to the role of first principle, and that scorned such notions as altruism and sacrifice for the common good as liberal delusions and even vicesfound more direct expression in Rand's nonfiction, including such works as For the New Intellectual The Virtue of Selfishness Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology (1967), and

What Art Is : The Esthetic Theory of Ayn Rand by Louise Torres Michelle Marder Kamhi Cultural icon Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was known as much for her philosophy as for her fiction. Her original theory of esthetics, which attacks many "masterpieces" of modernist art, is as combative and controversial as any of her work, but until now has received little serious scrutiny. In What Art Is , the authors demonstrate that Rand's ideas are supported by evidence from other academic fields. What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is. Though many people are skeptical about the alleged new art forms that have proliferated since the early twentieth century, today's critics claim that all such work, however incomprehensible, is art. A groundbreaking alternative to this view is provided by philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand (1905 1982). Best known as the author of

Russian-born novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand's inspiring moral defense of individualism and liberty Ayn Rand (1905-1982) won over millions to the the moral values of individualism and liberty which had fallen out of fashion more than a century ago. There continues to be a lively interest in her ideas. The 1997 release of Michael Paxton's documentary film Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life was nominated for an Academy Award. In May 1999, Showtime aired The Passion of Ayn Rand starring Helen Mirren as Rand, Peter Fonda as her husband Frank O'Connor, Eric Stoltz as her principal associate Nathaniel Branden and Judy Delpy as Barbara Branden (both a Rand associate and author of the acclaimed biography on which the movie was based). Ayn Rand, 1905-1982
March 1982 Ayn Rand, author and philosopher, died March 6 at her home in New York City. The author of Atlas Shrugged The Fountainhead and numerous non-fiction works was influential in the libertarian movement, even though she personally disapproved of it. Her philosophy of objectivism argued for the supremacy of reason, the individual and capitalism. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her legions of fans. In today's troubled times, her works and her wisdom are more needed than ever. The philosophic seeds she spread have taken root and perhaps this generation will see the philosophic revolution she inspired but which failed to materialize in her lifetime.

Ayn Rand
American Novelist and Objectivist Philosopher
Ayn Rand was born in Russia, and came to the US after her education at the University of Stalingrad, in 1926. She moved from Chicago, where she was living with relatives, to Hollywood shortly after her arrival in the states. In 1931 she received citizenship. During this time she worked on a number of unsuccessful plays, while she was employed as a wardrobe girl at one of the major movie studios. Some of her early works include We The Living(1936) and Anthem(1938). These two novels describe the evils of totalitarianism, as she experienced it in Russia. Deeply seated in the phiolosophy of Aristotle, she used his rationality to defend individuals and their rights. Moving towards the theme of egoistic genius, she produced The Fountainhead(1943), and in Atlas Shrugged(1957) she produced a fully developed philosophy of individualism. She defined Objectivism as "the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." Atlas was the end of Rand's fiction writing. From this point on she devoted all her time to defense of her objectivism.

This view became the basis for her immensely popular writings, which included The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand was born Alice Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg, Russia on February 2, 1905 to Fronz and Anna Rosenbaum, the first of three daughters. Fronz Rosenbaum was a moderately successful chemist who was able to provide a good living for his family. As the years of Czarist Russia came to a close, violence surged throughout the country. Rand's parents believed that their children should be spared news of the revolution, and kept them mostly ignorant of political events. As the revolution moved closer and encroached on the family, Rand saw her father's chemistry shop confiscated by Soviet authorities in their attempt to nationalize the economy. It was her first introduction to collectivism, and was one of the early events that led to her .....

Synopsis
Equality 7-2521 lives in the Dark Ages of the future, when all decisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, all traces of individualism have been wiped out. But the spark of individual thought and freedom still burns in Equality 7-2521's breast, though he doesn't know what to call his passion to think and choose for himself, other than sinful. In a world where he is punished for being better than his brothers, he finds a tunnel from ancient times where he can be by himself to write and think. He discovers electricity - and the miracle of the love that a man can have for a woman. Equality 7-2521 comes close to losing his life for this because his knowledge was regarded as a treacherous blasphemy. In a world where the crowd is one - a great WE, he has rediscovered the lost and holy word - I.

FAQ: What is Objectivism?
Answer by William Thomas My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute. Atlas Shrugged Objectivism is the philosophy of rational individualism founded by Ayn Rand (1905-1982). In novels such as The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , Rand dramatized her ideal man, the producer who lives by his own effort and does not give or receive the undeserved, who honors achievement and rejects envy. Rand laid out the details of her world-view in nonfiction books such as The Virtue of Selfishness and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal Objectivism holds that there is no greater moral goal than achieving happiness. But one cannot achieve happiness by wish or whim. Fundamentally, it requires rational respect for the facts of reality, including the facts about our human nature and needs. Happiness requires that one live by objective principles, including moral integrity and respect for the rights of others. Politically, Objectivists advocate laissez-faire capitalism. Under capitalism, a strictly limited government protects each person's rights to life, liberty, and property and forbids that anyone initiate force against anyone else. The heroes of Objectivism are achievers who build businesses, invent technologies, and create art and ideas, depending on their own talents and on trade with other independent people to reach their goals.

Philosopher of the Week. February 3, 2003. Ayn Rand (1905-1982) Russia/United States Writer and philosopher, Ayn Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1905. At the age of nine, she decided to become a fiction writer. During high school, she was an eyewitness to both the Kerensky Revolution and the Bolshevik (Communist) Revolution. When the communists took over Russia, her father's pharmacy was confiscated and her family was reduced to severe poverty. Rand graduated from the University of Petrograd in 1924, where she studied philosophy and history. Because of her love of movies, she studied screen writing at the State Institute for Cinema Arts following graduation. Near the end of 1925, Rand received permission to visit her relatives in the United States. Once in the U.S., she was determined to stay, eventually making her way to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. In Hollywood, Rand met Cecil B. DeMille, who gave her a job at his studio. She worked for several years doing odd jobs at the studio before she sold her first screenplay, "Red Pawn," in 1932. Her first novel, We the Living, was published in 1936. While writing her novels, she realized that to create heroic fictional characters, she had to learn what made these characters possible. She developed "a philosophy for living on earth," which became the basis for her philosophy called Objectivism. "My philosophy, in essence is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his absolute."
