This volume contains three of Racine's classical drama. Two 'Iphigenia' and 'Phaedra' are based on plays of Euripides. The third is based on a Biblical story.
'Iphigenia' relates to the conflict Agammemnon has over whether or not to meet the demands of the gods and sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia, or by not doing so to prevent the Greek expedition from proceeding on its way to war with Troy. The outcome is an unusual one for Racine in that Iphigenia is spared, and the expedition nonetheless goes ahead.
The virtous Phaedra who worked so hard to overcome her passion for Hippolytus has been defeated by that passion. The passion, the sinful nature of the human heart has ruthlessly brought to the tragic death of the innocence. This is the harsh and bleak world of Racine's tragedy, the cruel world in which sinner and innocent alike go to their doom.
In 'Athaliah' Racine's Jansenist religious sympathies come to the fore, though in contradiction with loyalty to the monarchy and Louis XIV who despised Jansenism. Athaliah is a ruling queen who despite her sympathetic character is eventually defeated by a cruel and inevitable fate.

In the first section of our History of Theatre, we looked at the beginnings of theatre in Greece, its migration to Rome, and its decline during the Middle Ages. In this section we'll examine the rebirth of the theatre and its domination by a playwright of genius. It is during this period that theatre re-emerges from the Church and becomes secular theatre although it remains largely under the control of the state, be that sovereign King or Republic.
    Renaissance and Reformation
During the 15th and 16th Centuries, European Society was influenced by the Renaissance a "rebirth" or rediscovery of the classical worlds of Rome and Greece and by a movement toward nationalism the building of coherent nation-states such as England, France and Spain (with Germany and Italy following later). The impact of these changes on the theatre went beyond mere secularization of an artform that had been dominated for centuries by the Church.
The Renaissance, while having a major impact on the other arts, had less influence on theatre in England than in Italy, where classic Roman plays were revived for performance. Of greater impact was the Protestant Reformation and the movement toward nationalism which accompanied the Reformation. The rediscovery of the classics did influence the development of the stage first in Italy, then in France and England and the rest of Europe. It was in Italy that the first steps were taken toward the development of the proscenium, or "picture frame", stage with which we are so familiar today.

Specialized pages offer women writers, American authors, United Kingdom authors, and world authors grouped by continent. Developed solely for this website, additional project resources include significant authors in children's literature and a compilation of other "top 100" literature projects. Each author's entry includes online biographical research and landmarks, scholarly resources, major works online, and Busse Library offerings for the novelist, dramatist, or poet. This project, and its inspiration, develop from a tradition to select the world's most important authors who made a lasting contribution to literature and to compile a selection of history's most significant published texts in fiction and nonfiction.

    JEAN RACINE
XIV. Lajos francia uralkodót "Napkirály"-nak nevezték, s így emlegetik manapság is. Úgy is tûnt a XVII. század optikájában és akusztikájában, hogy minden körülötte kering, mint a bolygók a Nap körül. Versailles-i palotája követendõ, sõt utánzandó példa volt királyok, hercegek, módosabb földesurak számára. A Habsburgok Schönbrunnja Bécs mellett, a Hohenzollerek Potsdam ja, illetve királyi pihenõje, a "Sanssouci", az Esterházyak kastélya és parkja Fertõdön, az orosz Petrodvorec Szentpétervár szomszédságában és velük úri otthonok, úri kertek tucatjai mind kicsi Versailles-ok voltak. Az illemszabályok, a táncok, az udvarias ság társalgási szabályai. Európa-szerte olyanok voltak, ahogy Versailles példát adott. A mûvészi és irodalmi ízlés, a stílus mindenütt a Napkirály körére figyelt. A kultúrtörténet ezt a korszakot barokknak nevezi, a barokk pedig folytatta és torzította a r eneszánsz tiszta formáit, egyszersmind elõkészítve a felvilágosodás tiszta gondolkodásmódját. Franciaországban a barokk nemcsak folytatta a reneszánszot, de az ókor stíluseszményét annyira a magáénak tudta, hogy a klasszikus eszmény követését klasszicizmus nak nevezte és nevezzük ma is. Már a francia reneszánsz legfontosabb irodalmi-költõi köre, amely a nagy csoportú csillagkép után "Pléiade"-nak nevezte magát, stílusiránnyá formálta a klasszicizmust.
