Laurence of Lindores
The first philosopher recorded at the University of St Andrews was the first Master of the College of St John, Laurence of Lindores. He was born probably in the 1370s, studied at the University of Paris from 1393, and died after 1438. He was the leading figure in the University of St Andrews in its early days (it was founded in 1413), Principal Regent of Pedagogy and Rector and Governor of the University. He was the Papal Inquisitor of Heretical Pravity in Scotland, whose main job was to root our heresy and who is now mainly remembered for burning heretics. His works were widely read in Continental universities over the succeeding one hundred years and were Copernicus' source of knowledge of medieval physics.

Biographical Information on Physician Writers
N-S Taslima Nasrin
Nasrin received Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from Mymensingh Medical College (Bangladesh) in 1984. Working as a gynecologist and anesthesiologist in Dhaka hospitals, she became increasingly aware of and vocal about the status of women in Bengali society. As a result of her writing, political and religious authorities denounced her, ultimately calling for her arrest and execution for blasphemy. With the help of PEN, Amnesty International, and the European Union, she was given asylum in Sweden in 1994. She continues to write fiction, poetry, and articles; and has been awarded the Sakharov prize for Freedom of Thought by the Parliament of the European Union. Background

Roster Of Physician Writers We are surprised if the doctor, by stealing some hours from his daily avocations, attains even moderate eminence in the path of literature. Edward Berdoe The following list includes the names, life-dates, and nationalities of all the physician writers of whom I am aware, drawn from a variety of resources . To be included, an individual must be a physician (Doctor of Medicine or of Osteopathy in the United States, or similarly certified or accepted in countries other than the United States, or in previous eras), and must have published (not just self-published) at least one book (not just a chap book) of a "creative" nature - fiction, poetry, drama, essay. Pseudonyms are italicized , preceded or followed by real names. Each name is linked to a section of brief and informal biographical (emphasizing medical training and work) and bibliographical (including reference to background sources as well as selected works) information, but no literary criticism. The total number of authors included is of course but a fraction of all physician writers, and, in addition to encouraging interest in this neglected aspect of the literature and medicine, or medical humanities, field, one reason for publishing this list is to invite suggestions for additions to it.

As Francois Rabelais ( 14831553) said Science without conscience is the deathof the soul. David Bromfield, Ambassador for Science Year 2002
http://www.scienceyear.com/about_sy/events/dna_experts.html
" I have in recent years been busy with the business of DNA - as a designer I am fascinated by what makes us tick, what makes us do the things we do and why.
Science and technology are rapidily increasing what we know of ourselves and how we explain ourselves, to ourselves.
For anyone in the creative industires this information is both gold dust and inspiration."
Professor Helen Storey
Designer and artist
March 2002
" Genetic science in this century will touch on all the aspects of our lives that we hold most dear; be it reproduction, nutrition or disease. In order to appreciate what these technologies will be able to deliver, what is hype and what is to be avoided, we need to be literate in exactly what genes do and how and why they do it. "
Baroness Susan Greenfield
President, Royal Institution
March 2002
" This event is a fantastic opportunity for children to interact with one of the most important progressions in science in recent years. The discovery of DNA has had a monumental impact on science. It is vital that we take an active role in making these discoveries accessible to young people." Baroness Catherine Ashton Minister for School Standards March 2002 "The gene is the unit of Life. The soul is the unit of Humanity. We know the alphabet of Life, we have unravelled the code. But remember, like words, DNA has a significance beyond the sum of its parts.
