History of Journalism

Books: Reference Books: History of Journalism Mightier Than the Sword: How the News Media Have Shaped American History by Rodger Streitmatter (1997): This sightseeing tour of American history as influenced by the press, visits 14 landmark events in U.S. history, from the abolitionist movement and the struggle for women's rights to the civil rights movement and Watergate, and demonstrates how American journalism, since the 1760s, has not merely recorded this nation's history, but has played a role in shaping it. The Muckrake Years by David Mark Chalmers (1974): A history of muckraking journalism of the early 20th century, including reprints of some of its most influential articles such as Lincoln Steffens’ "The Shame of the Cities," Ida Tarbell’s "The History of the Standard Oil Company" and Samuel Hopkins Adams’ "The Great American Fraud" which uncovered the truth about the dangers of the patent medicine industry.
