Often called the "Father of American Illustration," Howard Pyle established an extraordinarily influential art school in 1903. Located in Wilmington, Delaware, and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, it is known today as the Brandywine School. There, Pyle taught dozens of artists, including well-known illustrators such as N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish and Jessie Willcox Smith. Pyle was instrumental in promoting his students' work to his publishers to start them on long and productive careers. Many of the works he illustrated were books he wrote himself, such as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood . Most of his illustrations were in his distinctive pen and ink style comparable to the wood-engraved images that were common during his childhood. When color was added to his compositions, he used rich earth tones against bright primaries with areas of deep shade and bright light. His work was highly prized by his publishers such as Century Everybody's and Harpers . The Brandywine Conservancy and the Delaware Art Museum are two institutions that maintain and exhibit his works. Although Pyle's seal is similar in style to the 1907 seal by Emily Bissell, there are many differences. Pyle's design is a more disciplined green and red rendering of the wreath with an opening at the top. The seal is somewhat larger to allow for the words "American Red Cross" and "1908" along its perimeter. In 1908, the Red Cross used this seal in its first coast-to-coast campaign.

Second and foremost, Howard Pyle was a teacher. That said, firstly he was an artist, an artist who changed the way the world looked at illustration and the way illustration looked to the world. Before Pyle, and indeed for many years after his career started, illustrations for adventure stories looked like the image at right. Their most noticeable trait was their "staginess" - the flat "stage" of the ground, the posed "actors" and the scenery "props" to support them. It could easily have been photographed from front row center. The stage manger might call "break" and the actors would walk off and prepare for the next scene. And this is the good stuff - A.B. Frost from 1890.
Then Pyle showed up. Born in 1853, he seemed determined from a precociously early age to become an author and more importantly an artist. By 1876, he moved to New York at the encouragement of Scribner's Magazine , for whom the drawing at left was made, also in 1890. Compare it with the Frost. First off, we know this isn't a stage - we can't even see the ground. The scenery seems very un-prop-like, and it's quite obvious that the only "break" that's going to occur at the end of this scene is someone's leg or head. The tension in the Frost scene is in our minds, that of Pyle's is before our eyes. His every drawing wasn't this dynamic, nor was every assignment rife with such potential scenes, but Pyle saw the action in art, and put it on the page for all to share. He also shared his views and skills with an amazing student body at his 1896 classes at the

Howard Pyle
Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware (Brandywine Valley) on March 5th, 1853. After short stints at schools like the Friends' School , Howard's parents allowed him to begin studying art instead of going to college. When he was sixteen, Howard began three years of study with the Belgian artist Van der Weilen. Howard returned home, helped his father in the family business, and continued to practice drawing. In 1876, Howard sent a set of verse, with illustrations, to Scribner's Monthly . They were accepted, and Howard then submitted a fairy tale to a children's magazine, Saint Nicholas , in 1877, which was, again, accepted. Spurred on by these successes and encouraged by his father, Howard left for New York late in 1876. By the age of twenty-five, Howard's work was in demand. He returned to Wilmington to live with his family and work from there. In 1881, Howard married Anne Poole. In 1883, Howard published his first book for children, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire . Other books stories followed, including

Famed American illustrator, Pyle also wrote a fair amount of fiction, much of it for "young adult" audiences. His depictions (both graphic and literary) of pirates and Robin Hood and adventurers still define our sense of such figures.

http://www.americanillustration.org/html/hp/bio.html
Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1853 and spent his entire life there, excluding two years in New York at the beginning of his career and one year in Italy, where he died in 1911. As a child, he commuted to a small art school in Philadelphia.
His first illustration appeared in 1876 in the old Scribner¹s Magazine. From then until his death he contributed stories, pictures and covers to the leading periodicals in the country including Harper¹s Ladies Home Journal, St. Nicholas, Collier¹s Weekly and The Century Magazine. His book illustrations include Robin Hood, King Arthur and his Knights, The Champions of the Round Table, Pepper and Salt and The Wonder Clock. In technical virtuosity, factual accuracy and versatility he was considered the foremost illustrator of his time but what truly set his work apart was his spirit of imagination. By the 1890s, Pyle was established in his profession as an illustrator and had begun to spend the majority of his time teaching.
Pyle set up his own school in studios built next to his own in Wilmington, with summer sessions at nearby Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He did not charge tuition and had over 100 students. He also taught at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and lectured at the Art Students League in New York. Many of the best known illustrators of the following two generations cherished his guidance. They include: W. H. D. Koerner, Violet Oakley, Maxfield Parrish, Frank Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N.C. Wyeth.

Someone should do a six-degress of separation for Howard Pyle; his influence touched so many artists, often through direct teaching: Alice Barber Stevens, N C Wyeth, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Maxfield Parrish, Ethel Franklin Betts, Jessie Willcox Smith, Harvey Dunn, Violet Oakley,
Sarah Stilwell Weber, Thornton Oakley, Frank Schoonover; it's amazing, he stands as one of the fathers of American Illustration and a first Golden Age Artist, lending his skills to book (Lady of Shalott, Adventures of Robin Hood, several Arthurian legend books) and magazine (St. Nicholas, Harper's) work, especially in color, for a rapidly maturing print industry. These pictures of Morgan are from Howard Pyle's The story of King Arthur and his knights Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) wrote and illustrated 4 Arthurian books, of which this is the first (he is also well known for another medieval subject, his Robin Hood). Pyle was the most important American illustrator of his generation, and teacher to a host of others, including N.C. Wyeth, whose work is featured above. The overall design and illustration of the books suggest something of Beardsley, but with a robust muscularity which is altogether his own. Some of the above text is taken from my notes to a 1999 exhibition of rare books from UBC's Special Collections. Myles Falworth was but eight years of age at that time, and it was only afterwards, and when he grew old enough to know more of the ins and outs of the matter, that he could remember by bits and pieces the things that afterwards happened; how one evening a knight came clattering into the court-year upon a horse, red-nostrilled and smeared with the sweat and foam of a desperate rideSir John Dale, a dear friend of the blind Lord.
Men of Iron Books (First Lines)
In merry England in the time of old, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood. No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades.
