It is perhaps not surprising that Howard Pyle, the premier artist of the "Golden Age of American Illustration," would have espoused American training for American artists. Pyle resisted the idea of going to Europe literally until the end of his life (he died of a kidney infection while visiting Italy) because he felt that Europe exerted too great a hold on the imagination and even talent of American artists. Yet much of the work that influenced Pyle in his youth was European, and many of the subjects that he pursued so distinctively in his mature work were European as well. As a child growing up in Delaware, Pyle learned the art of storytelling from children's classics such as Grimm's fairy tales, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Robinson Crusoe. From illustrated editions of authors including Dickens and Thackeray, Pyle first began to study the interaction of written text and art. In the Pre-Raphaelites artists Pyle's mother favored, he began to understand the ways in which color, line, and detail combine to tell a visual story. Pyle studied technique in Philadelphia before heading to New York in 1876 to pursue a career in illustration and writing at magazines such as Scribner's Monthly, Harper's

Michael Delahunt When I was very young in Wisconsin in the 1950s and early 60s my uncle Sam Manierre used to sit down with his nieces and nephews to tell us wonderful stories. He was an art historian (Harvard class of 1929) who also broke into spontaneous recitations of poetry. (Robert Louis Stevenson was one of his favorite poets.) There were several fairy tales he told us, and we listened to them as often as he'd tell them. Our attention was always merited. He delivered each telling of a story in the same impassioned manner the same studied pacing and tones of voice. One story was my favorite. It involved two magical bottles, each made of black glass. And when he told the tale he would bring out two actual bottles the very ones the story was about! They were empty old wine bottles, but I've never seen their like their shape was ordinary, but their color was fully dark and mysterious. (They were definitely not painted, neither outside nor in.) I hoped that one day those bottles would be mine. I remember eyeing them on a high shelf in Sam's rooms. They were probably discarded long long ago. Sam died at the age of 80 in 1988, survived by his wife, Louisa, who died in 1993. Here are some photographs I took of them in 1982. I decided to get really near to Sam's eyes for the

Examples: France, Troyes, Dance of Death , 16th century, incunabulum , illustrated with hand- colored woodcuts , Saxon State Library, Dresden, Germany. Based on a fourteenth-century morality poem by an unidentifiable author, the Dance of Death evolved into a set of illustrated verses depicting a dialogue between Death and people of all social ranks. The theme was very popular in 15th and 16th century Christian Europe, reminding the living that rank and station in life were meaningless in the face of death. The illustrations show representations of ecclesiastical and secular society being carried off by Death. The pages displayed here show the Pope, the Emperor, a cardinal, and a king.
