LANCELOT
Lancelot is the greatest of Arthur's knights. Son of King Ban of Benwick, he is known as Lancelot of the Lake or Lancelot du Lac because he was raised by the Lady of the Lake. Among his many adventures are the rescue of the abducted Queen Guinevere from Meleagant, an unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail and the rescue of the queen after she is condemned to be burned to death for adultery. Lancelot is loved by Elaine of Astolat, who dies because her love is unrequited. Elaine, the daugher of King Pelles, tricks Lancelot into sleeping with her and from that union Galahad is born. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings about the downfall of Arthur's realm.

Dear Artist, Yesterday in the New York clubs Salmagundi Art Students League Howard Pyle the Society of Illustrators I was cruising historical and current members' work, listening to wisps of conversation, digging in archives, wandering down memory lane. Howard Pyle (1853-1911) came to New York from Wilmington, Delaware, in 1873. Pyle arrived at the right time and instinctively recognized the power of pictures for everyone," says Pyle's biographer, Henry Pitz . Beyond his success in magazine and book illustration Pyle had a large influence on a generation of American artists. His students included

54. Annotated Bibliography Of Pyracy
Pyle, Howard, 18531911.; Johnson, Merle De Vore,. Howard Pyle s Book of Piratesfiction, fact fancy concerning the buccaneers marooners of the Spanish
http://blindkat.hegewisch.net/pirates/pirbibl.html
Pirates of the Caribbean Home Page An Annotated Bibliography Of Pyracy Back to the main Pirates Page This is far from a complete bibliography of Piracy and is not intended to be one. Instead it is a list of books that I have found useful and used to prepare this site. The first part is annotated, that is I have made comments about the books. At the bottom you will find a more inclusive list of books, I found useful while putting this page together. This bibliography is divded into works considered Historical in nature and works of Fiction Works considered Historical in nature are considered fact, but do not be fooled into believing they are 100% true. Most of what is told about pirates has been distorted through the imagination of generations of story tellers, known as Historians (I know, I'm one of them!). On occasion, some historians distort information in order to present a certain view. What we have is a written history of the lore of piracy. While most Historians make every effort to be as accurate as possible, they must rely on primary and secondary sources that are, at times suspect. At this point they may be led to specualte on what is probable and what is just the fancy of an overactive imagination. History, even when it is 400-600 years old continuosly gets revised and reviewed. Works considered to be fiction were knowingly written as fiction and are sold as fiction. Amazingly enough you may find quite a bit of factual information floating around in these books of fiction. This is because the best fiction is written by people who have good background on the history of the subject and draw from these facts to tell a story. For instance, Robert Louis Stevenson drew heavily on Defoe/Johnson and his own ocean going voyages to add realism to his book.

Photos: Brian Vanden Brink T he eerie, the uncanny, and the unexpected will be featured in Wondrous Strange , the inaugural exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum's Center for the Wyeth Family in Maine. On view through November 8, 1998, the exhibition presents a fresh and surprising view of the art of the Wyeths, showing how it is rooted in literary fancies: tales of exotic adventures and spiritual journeys, stories of romantic encounters, and children's fables, all played out on the stage of everyday life. Wondrous Strange was conceived by Andrew Wyeth's wife, Betsy James Wyeth, and organized by Mrs. Wyeth in collaboration with the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington and the Farnsworth Art Museum. After its debut at the Farnsworth Center for the Wyeth Family in Maine, the exhibition will travel to the Delaware Art Museum for viewing from December 10, 1998 to February 7, 1999. More than 100 works of art will be on display in Wondrous Strange , drawn from 40 public and private collections in the United States and abroad. The exhibition includes 25 to 30 works apiece by N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. Also on view: 25 to 30 pictures by Howard Pyle, the outstanding American illustrator who was N.C. Wyeth's teacher, and whose influence runs through the work of all three generations of Wyeths.

By nightfall, the Americans were in retreat, and within two weeks the British occupied the capital. Yet the fierce battle, the deadliest to that date in the war for independence, metaphorically transformed the terrain, sanctifying the river and gently rolling farmland with the blood of patriotism. A Brush with Conflict: The Battle of Brandywine in Art , an exhibition opening September 7, 2002 and continuing through November 24, 2002 at the Brandywine River Museum, presents images by artists of two centuries who found inspiration in the events, the landscape, and the personalities of the battle. Documents of history, such as informational broadsides, maps and engravings, are not found in this exhibition. Rather
