The illustrations of HOWARD PYLE (1853-1911) are as exciting now as they were a hundred years ago, while pictures by many of his contemporaries today look dated and mannered.
Several special qualities combined to make Pyle America's foremost illustrator. Pyle was interested in pictures, first of all, as drama. As a young man his initial reaction to a theatrical performance had made a great impression on him and influenced his point of view from then on. In his illustrations, Pyle sought to dramatize themes with universal appeal. The pictures portrayed basic human emotions: the ruthlessness of pirate greed, raw grief in the break-up of Lee's army after Appomattox, smug pride, humble petition.
Pyle's concept of a picture was never trite. He deliberately looked for new ways to tell a story and involved himself in his subject so thoroughly that his pictures make the reader and eye-witness to a vivid experience.
Having evolved his basic pictorial idea, Pyle developed his compositions; his pictures are fascinating to analyze. No area of a picture is wasted; each makes its contribution, through placement, line, tone or color, to the whole story. Through the details, the viewers eye is purposefully led toward the focal center.

Howard Pyle, b. Wilmington, Del., Mar. 5, 1853 , d. Nov. 9, 1911 , was a noted American illustrator and author whose work is characterized by an imaginative and colorful realism and a passion for historical detail. He illustrated numerous historical and adventure stories for such periodicals as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas as well as his own books for children, including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and Otto of the Silver Hand In his later years Pyle devoted most of his time to teaching such outstanding illustrators of the succeeding generation of the American Brandywine school as Maxfield Parrish , Frank E. Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N. C. Wyeth
My grandfather, Ellis Augustus Oliver , was a member of Howard Pyle's last class at Drexel in Philadelphia before Pyle retreated permanently to Wilmington. Barry McWilliams and Batsy Bybell have cooperated to create a more extensive website devoted to Howard Pyle that includes ten of Pyle's own stories.

Detroit: Gale Research Inc.,
1979. pg. 224. Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 5, 1853. His family settled the Brandywine Valley after arriving from England as Quaker immigrants in 1682. At the time of Pyle's birth, Wilmington was a small town beginning to grow into a city. The Pyle home was in the country just outside of town next to a rich garden filled with flowers, fruit trees, vines, a greenhouse and a summerhouse. Books and pictures filled the home and the fireplace in the library contributed to its warm and inviting atmosphere. These surroundings nurtured Pyle's young imagination. The images of his idyllic childhood in Wilmington would stay with Pyle all of his life. He would return to them again and again in his illustrations and writings such as in the descriptions of the gardens in The Garden Behind the Moon, The Story of Jack Ballister's Fortunes, and in some of the descriptive passages in his Arthurian books (Nesbitt 1966, 9). According to Pyle, his mother brightened his childhood with "an illuminating joyfulness in beautiful things" (Agosta 1987, 4). She introduced him to the Grimm fairy tales, stories from the Arabian Nights, Slovenly Peter, A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales, Robinson Crusoe, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Ritson's collection of ballads about Robin Hood. He spent hours reading illustrated novels by Dickens, Thackeray, Bunyan, and Dafoe and enjoying the illustrations by Thomas Bewick, Felix Octavius Darley, and John Tenniel in Punch. His mother also exposed him to important British artists and illustrators of the 1860's including Arthur Boyd Houghton, Charles Keene, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Holman Hunt, and Edward Burne-Jones. Very early in life Pyle began associating pictures with texts. According to Henry Pitz, "the concept of the picture springing from literary ideas was ingrained in him from the start" (Pitz 1969, 40).

William Morris Howard Pyle J.R.R. Tolkien H oward Pyle (1853-1911) is the most influential American writer/illustrator of adventure fiction. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883) Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates , and Pyle's four-volume retelling of the stories of the Round Table - The Story of King Arthur and His Knights The Story of the Champions of the Round Table The Story of Lancelot and His Companions (1907), and The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur (1910) - are classics of both storytelling and illustration. Pyle also wrote and illustrated a series of books for young children; the best-known are and The Wonder Clock "Pyle saw the action in art, and put it on the page for all to share." Pyle was passionate about capturing drama in his work; both his color paintings and his black-and-white drawings exhibit a theatrical sense of action and lighting. Pyle was also passionately American , and argued against the prevailing European dominance of artistic training. Pyle began teaching art (for free) in 1896; his students included beloved artists Jessie Wilcox Smith, N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, and Maxfield Parrish. These artists and their students are collectively known as the Brandywine School, and they redefined how generations of children picture bloodthirsty pirates, noble queens, and valiant knights.
