"In Search of Lost Time" ("Remembrance of Things Past") Á la Recherche du temps perdu
Marcel Proust was over forty years old when Du côté de chez Swann ("Swann's Way") was first published, at his own expense, in 1913. At the time of publication, he had planned the full work, A la Recherche du temps perdu , to span only 3 books/volumes/parts. However it grew in such a way that Proust ultimately conceived of his work as one novel, falling into seven books/volumes/parts. C K Scott-Moncrieff, translator of the first English version of A la Recherche du temps perdu , gave it the title "Remembrance of Things Past". A subsequent translator gave the work the title "In Search of Lost Time". There are also variantions in the English translation of the titles of the various parts.

Proust was born July 10, 1871, in Paris, of a well-to-do family and educated at the Lyc©e Condorcet. As a young man he studied law, but gave it up after a brief time to mingle with Parisian fashionable society and to write. His first work, a collection of essays and stories titled Pleasures and Regrets (1896; trans. 1948), was not notable, but the impressions he gathered in salons provided the material for this book and were used to greater effect in his later work. At the age of 35, Proust, a victim of asthma since childhood, became a chronic invalid. He spent the rest of his life as a recluse, almost never leaving his cork-lined room, and worked on his masterpiece, the vast

Marcel Proust (1871-1922): reassessment of his asthma and other maladies
OP Sharma Marcel Proust endured severe allergies and bronchial asthma from early childhood. Those who suffer from the frightening and recurrent pangs of asthma often become dependent on their parents particularly mother; Proust was no exception. In his time asthma was poorly understood by physicians who considered the illness to be a type of hysteria. Decades later, we now understand that the severe, poorly controlled, suffocating episodes of asthma were responsible for the complex persona that Marcel Proust had assumed.
