LIBRARY 100: INFORMATION LITERACY
An Introduction to Library Research
Mellone
RESEARCH TOPIC You must choose ONE historically important person who has significantly impacted our modern world, and who is deceased.
To make things easier for you I have provided below a sample list of important individuals. If none of these interests you, you may choose some other person from the 19th or 20th centuries, subject to my approval. THE SELECTION OF YOUR TOPIC IS DUE September 5th, because you will begin researching your topic with Assignment 3 which is due September 12th. Most class meetings you will have another assignment due. This is to keep you working every week on your topic so as we get closer to when the short essay is due (November 5th) you will already have done the research. I have divided the subjects in the same way that the college does, into three divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences. If you have a declared major then your topic will be within your major. If you still have an undeclared major you can choose the area you are interested in. HUMANITIES TOPICS

“Anarchism ... may be described as the doctrine that all the affairs of men should be managed by individuals or voluntary associations, and that the State should be abolished.” – Benjamin Tucker, 1886
“The anarchist is the enemy of humanity, the enemy of all mankind, and his is a deeper degree of criminality than any other.” – Theodore Roosevelt, 1901
About Market Anarchism
Market Anarchism is the doctrine that the legislative, adjudicative, and protective functions unjustly and inefficiently monopolised by the coercive State should be entirely turned over to the voluntary, consensual forces of market society.
As Thomas Paine wrote in The Rights of Man
Great part of that order which reigns among mankind is not the effect of government. It has its origin in the principles of society and the natural constitution of man. It existed prior to government, and would exist if the formality of government was abolished. The mutual dependence and reciprocal interest which man has upon man, and all the parts of civilised community upon each other, create that great chain of connection which holds it together. The landholder, the farmer, the manufacturer, the merchant, the tradesman, and every occupation, prospers by the aid which each receives from the other, and from the whole. Common interest regulates their concerns, and forms their law; and the laws which common usage ordains, have a greater influence than the laws of government. In fine, society performs for itself almost everything which is ascribed to government.
