About Project Gutenberg:
Project Gutenberg began in 1971 when Michael Hart was given, by pure luck, an operator's account with $100,000,000 of computer time in it by the operators of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois. Michael Hart decided that the best way to use this windfall was to convert the worlds great literature to electronic versions. The rest is history, and "Project Gutenberg". Just as the invention of the printing press was responsible for a wide spread increase in literacy, so has the electronic age lead to a truly global communication network. When Michael started his pioneering work markup languages and the internet were far in the future, so he stored all his documents as 'Plain Vanilla ASCII' . Now with the web, the internet and XML we have reached a stage where we can begin to convert some of these documents to XHTML and XML. The official Gutenberg philosophy and history is fully explained on their site. See the link on the right of this page.
The HTML Writers Guild and Project Gutenberg
What better way is there to leave a gift to future generations than to mark up documents in XHTML or XML, and who is better to do this than members of the worlds largest organization of 'markup professionals', namely ourselves.

1. Original uses "Freindship" rather than "Friendship". 2. This was a compound document, and was the most difficult I have ever marked up! Took me 3 hours to validate it!! It also contains part of a play, that is not handled well by gutbook. Lots of letters - I introduced a letter module into the DTD. Project Gutenberg produces books in electronic form (ebooks) which are freely available to the public. These ebooks may be read on a computer using a simple text editor or viewer. The books are in the 'public domain' and there are over 16,000 available. All have been prepared by volunteers and cover the areas of light literature (Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, etc.); other literature (Shakespeare, Moby Dick, Paradise Lost, etc.) and reference (Roget's Thesaurus, The Bible, dictionaries, etc.). Many of the books, which have an 'Australian flavour', may be accessed from this site. Others may be accessed by visiting Project Gutenberg in the United States Australian Discovery page for details of celebrations planned in 2006. 31. Edgar Rice Burroughs In Oak Park
Biography and list of texts online at Project Gutenberg.
http://oprf.com/Burroughs/index.html
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer who created Tarzan and fantastic tales of science fiction, was born February 23, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois to Major George Tyler Burroughs and Mary Evaline (Zieger). Edgar Burroughs unsuccessfully pursued a series of careers until he was 35 years old: soldier, cowboy, salesman, and other singular interests. It wasn't until his Oak Park years, between 1914 and 1919, that Burroughs became a successful author. While living in Chicago and Oak Park, Burroughs created many of his most memorable characters. The first Tarzan book, Tarzan the Ape Man , was completed in May 1912. Burroughs was also reknown for writings including the "John Carter of Mars" books, magazine stories, and many other published works. Burroughs captivated many children and adults alike with his imaginative tales. Today his legacy lives on in print film video and online Burroughs' ERB, Inc.
