Après le décès de sa mère, alors qu'il n'a que 14 ans, son père l'envoie faire ses études chez les jésuites. Plus tard il s'engage dans les armées du roi, avant de retourner étudier. En 1719, il essuie une peine de coeur avec Manon. Pour oublier, il décide de donner sa vie aux jésuites, mais ceux-ci refusent. Il rentre dans les ordres chez les moines bénédictins à l'abbaye de Saint-Wandrille, près de Rouen. Il devient abbé en 1726. Nommé d'abord à Evreux, il est par la suite chargé de mener des travaux historiques à l'abbaye de Saint Germain des Prés à Paris. L'Abbé Prévost s'enfuit en Angleterre à la fin de l'année 1728, après la parution des quatre premiers tomes de ses Mémoires. Il renonce aux Bénédictins, et voyage.
