Family Crests and Coats of Arms: the Heraldic Artist
We have researched the Prescott family crest in the most recognized sources of coats of arms. Before an artist or craftsman can render a Coat of Arms, it must exist. In other words the arms must have been designed and recorded by the heralds from time immemorial.

William Thomas Walsh (1891-1949)
William was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on September 11, 1891, and through the years was given a sound Catholic education that would inspire him in later years with a fierce desire to defend it. After acquiring a B.A from Yale, he worked as a reporter at various newspapers for a few years, taught one year in a Hartford public high school, and in 1910, published his first book, The Mirage of the Many . Walsh wrote it as a warning to those who would follow Socialism. In 1914, he married Helen Gerard Sherwood. Four years later he became head of the department of English at Roxbury School, and in 1933 professor of English at Manhattanville College, New York City. It wasn't until twenty years after his first book that Walsh finally wrote and published a second. Isabella of Spain , which was translated into Spanish (and later into French and German), was published six years before the advent of the Spanish Civil War. Philip II , a massive volume that covers anyone who was anyone from the years 1527-1598, was published one year after the initiation of the war against the Catholic Faith in Spain. The London Times regarded it as more gripping than fiction. The New York Times claimed that, "

ENVISIONING in South Carolina
South Carolina AER members enjoyed beautiful weather, scrumptuous seafood, delightful downtown Charleston, and a double dose of ENVISION when they convened in Mt. Pleasant, SC on January 22 and 23 for their annual conference. Field Services Representative Sandi Baker joined 65 conference attendees to engage them in 2 sessions of hands-on activities as they experienced ENVISION, APH's training curriculum for teaching students to use near and distance optical devices. During this hands-on training, participants heard stories about Emmy the Emu and her brothers in the Australian outback, and were led through a variety of fun activities that teachers will use with their students as they teach them to use their devices.
APH Workshop for State Assessment Personnel
The Accessible Tests Department hosted a workshop, Making Tests Accessible for Students with Visual Impairments , at APH, January 14-15. The historic event, similar to one offered for test publishers in the fall, attracted 26 participants from 13 states. Those attending the training included state assessment personnel as well as representatives from the United States Department of Defense and two test publishing companies. The workshop provided information regarding test development and adaptation to ensure accessibility for students with visual impairments and to address other critical issues involved in providing accessible tests.

Janie Humphries Named Director of Educational and Advisory Services
After a national search we are pleased to announce that Janie Humphries has been named Director of Educational and Advisory Services. Janie joined APH as the first "official" APH Field Services Representative in August of 2000 after a successful career in Arkansas as a vision teacher, regional preschool consultant, and acting director of Educational Services for the Visually Impaired (Arkansas Department of Education/School for the Blind). During her tenure at APH, Janie has traveled the country sharing information about the company's products and services with a considerable amount of her time focused on the development of three new federal initiatives. One of those initiatives has allowed Janie to contract with experts to incorporate their knowledge of APH products into presentations. Topics presented around the country, in partnership with our Ex Officio Trustees, have ranged from teaching math skills to developing a better understanding of cortical visual impairments. A second initiative has allowed Janie to work with APH staff to create special product catalogs and videos. The third initiative includes the University Product Loan System that has proven to be a very successful strategy for university instructors to share APH products. In her new role, Janie will continue to meet federal initiative goals as well as provide leadership to the Federal Quota Census process and the growing field services responsibilities.

Bass, Rick. THE BOOK OF YAAK. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1996. First edition. ISBN 0395770149. Bass captures, in his inimitable style, the soul of the Yaak Valley of northern Montana, one of the last great wild places in the United States - a majestic land of black bears and grizzlies, wolves and coyotes, bald and golden eagles, wolverine, lynx, marten, fisher, and elk. Following in the natural and literary traditions of Joseph Wood Krutch and Edward Abbey, Bass contends that if places like the Yaak are lost, so to will be the human riches of mystery and imagination. Signed by Bass on the title page. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Price: $35.00 Breuer, William B. GERONIMO! American Paratroopers in World War II. Numerous textual photos. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1989. First edition. ISBN 0312033508. From North Africa to Sicily and from the Philippines to Normandy, Breuer describes the creation and deployment of U.S. Army parachute units during World War II, incorporating the recollections of 562 former paratroopers. A very good copy in a bright and glossy dust jacket. Price: $15.00
